Participation of the complement system in ischemia/reperfusion injury.
Reperfusion of ischemic skeletal muscle is associated with an early infiltration of WBC, a process mediated by locally generated chemotactic factors. We present evidence that selective activation of the alternative complement cascade occurs in response to skeletal muscle ischemia/reperfusion injury. Complement activation may result in the generation of peptides which are chemotactic for neutrophils, and the formation of molecular complexes which injure cell membranes.

[Clinical andropause].
A group of 43 male patients aged between 50 and 67 years with the symptoms of andropause in presented. The patients were divided into three groups depending on the degree of the symptoms. Such a classification may facilitate a choice of therapeutical methods.
[Gonadal intraparenchymatous functional reserve in andropause].
Blood plasma testosterone (T), estradiol (E2) levels and gonadal reserve in 43 patients aged between 50 and 66 years with andropause symptoms have been determined. The patients were divided into 3 subgroups depending on the severity of the symptoms. No significant difference was noted in T level of these patients compared to the range in younger males as well as a control group of corresponding age but with no andropausal symptoms. E2 level was significantly elevated in the observed group compared to the two control groups. No difference was noted in T and E2 levels between the 3 subgroups of the andropausal patients. Gonadal reserve in the observed group was significantly lower compared to the control groups of the younger males. No significant difference was noted in the gonadal reserve between 3 subgroups of the andropausal patients.

A case of granulosa cell tumour with cystic endometrial hyperplasia in a blue fox vixen (Alopex lagopus).
The clinical features of a case of granulosa cell tumour in the blue fox (Alopex lagopus) are described. The associated hormonal changes are discussed in relation to present knowledge of the regulation of the oestrous and furring cycles in this species.

Eosinophilic granuloma of bone in the growing epiphysis.
Eosinophilic granuloma of bone is a rare skeletal manifestation of one of the spectrum of diseases known as histiocytosis X. These lesions often simulate other pathophysiologic processes (Ewing sarcoma, chronic osteomyelitis, Brodie abscess, and chondroblastoma) and may present significant diagnostic problems. Three additional cases of eosinophilic granuloma in an epiphysis are reviewed in this report. Transphyseal extension was present in all our cases and in five of 10 cases documented in the literature. Diagnosis demands accurate biopsy and histopathologic evaluation. Treatment and prognosis are individualized.

Study of the cardiac conduction tissues in the paediatric age group.
We have reviewed our experience with study of the conduction system of the heart and tried to condense our experience in the hope of aiding others to study this neglected part of the heart. The techniques involved are not complicated but do require patience and attention to detail. The key to success is the ability to cut serial sections, and to mount and study sub-serial sections. The techniques used are briefly described and then attention is given to the removal of blocks, the single most important step in the whole procedure. Advice is offered on the optimal method of studying the sinus node and the atrioventricular junctional area in the normal heart. Thereafter methods are described for studying the conduction systems in hearts with abnormal atrioventricular nodes, with ventricular septal defects and with ventricular pre-excitation. Similar attention is then paid to sudden infant death syndrome with regard to the conduction system, to congenitally complete heart block and finally to acquired disease in congenitally malformed hearts. Hope is expressed that more may become interested in the study of this fascinating system, or else refer suitable hearts to those who already are.
