Thirty-one patients who underwent retropubic prostatectomy under epidural anesthesia for benign hypertrophy of the prostate were checked for serum prolactin levels before and during operation. A significant increase in serum prolactin levels was noted during operation after the removal of the prostate, as compared with levels just prior to its removal. This difference suggests high concentration of prolactin in the prostatic tissue, part of which was released into the bloodstream during the traumatic squeezing of the prostate.
We evaluated the refraction of 198 children born prematurely with birth-weights of 2,000 g or less, without any ocular disease. Between the ages of 6 months to 3 1/2 years these children had a mild hypermetropia. The refractive error did not change between the ages of 6 months and 3 1/2 years. The refraction of the prematurely born children was similar to that found in children born at full term.

During exposure to heat there is an increase of the intraocular pressure in nonacclimatized persons. This increase is not found after heat acclimatization has been carried out. The increase of the intraocular pressure in the nonacclimatized persons can be attributed to the increase of the body temperature due to insufficient sweating.
We examined the precorneal film, the Schirmer test No. 1, and the break-up time tests in 440 healthy young students. There were no statistically significant differences (1) between men and women from the same origin who were brought up in the same environment, (2) between students from different ethnic origins who were brought up in the same environment, and (3) between students of the same origin who were brought up in different environments. Gradual seasonal changes in climatic factors, such as temperature, humidity, visibility, and barometric pressure, seem to have no appreciable effect on the Schirmer test No. 1 or break-up time test.
Two cases are reported of the development of mucoid adenocarcinoma of the colon in young patients, nineteen and thirty-four years after ureterocolic anastomosis for benign conditions. One patient showed implantation of the colonic neoplasm on the mucosa of an upper calyx in the obstructed kidney. Patients who have undergone ureterocolic anastomosis have a greatly increased risk of the development of large-bowel neoplasms. When suspected, radiologic examination of the colon using a water-soluble contrast material, together with rectosigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy, is essential. Because of the serious nature of this complication, it is suggested that the recent trend to return to the use of large bowel in urinary diversion may be hazardous, especially in the young patient with a benign disease.
Nonidentical twins with ectopic ureteroceles, and duplication of the urinary collecting system in two more members of the same family are described. This incidence may indicate that inborn anomalies of the urinary tract may have a genetic background.
A pseudoaneurysm of a primary branch of the renal artery with massive hemorrhage developed in a patient who underwent percutaneous needle renal biopsy. He was treated successfully by embolization of the artery with gelatin sponge (Gelfoam).
The diurnal curves of 21 patients (40 eyes) with angle-closure glaucoma and of 21 normotensive subjects (42 eyes) were studied. The patients with angle-closure glaucoma had a V-shaped diurnal curve that was completely different from the diurnal curve of the normotensive subjects. Most of the eyes of the patients with angle-closure glaucoma had a diurnal change of the intraocular pressure of 8 mmHg or more, while in the normotensive subjects only 1 eye had a diurnal change as large as 8 mmHg.

The causes for enucleation, evisceration, and exenteration were compared between Malawi and Israel. Differences in etiology, age, and sex were found due to the medical facilities, standard of living, and cultural background of each country.

A relatively small decrease in intraocular pressure secondary to submaximal work can be demonstrated when factors other than the work load itself are eliminated--diurnal variation, body position, and the effect of repeated examinations. A feedback mechanism that causes a return of IOP towards its normal value after work-induced decreases is postulated.
A 55-year-old woman with reticulum cell sarcoma of the stomach presented with a sudden decrease in vision and acute blood loss anaemia with thrombocytopenia. Superficial retinal haemorrhages were present in both eyes. These haemorrhages were absorbed gradually, yet a large macular mass appeared in the right eye which simulated a neoplasm. This mass disappeared over a period of a few weeks leaving minimal changes in the pigment epithelium and remarkably good visual acuity.

A simple non-touch technique for urinary paracentesis with a standard intracath is described. The application of this method for continuous urinary drainage in the relatively contaminated bedside environment may reduce the chance of bladder injury and infection in gravely ill patients until a more definite procedure is feasible.
