A simple and sensitive method for determining hypusine in proteins was developed. A greater part of amino acids in the acid hydrolysate of proteins was separated from hypusine by treatment with an ion-exchange resin. The sample containing partially purified hypusine was then analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography using the post-column derivatization method with o-phthalaldehyde. The recovery rate of hypusine through the overall procedure was more than 95%. Using this method, the distribution and developmental changes of hypusine in proteins were determined. The amino acid was found in proteins of all examined organs of rat. Its concentration was 5-40 nmol/g protein. The subcellular distribution in rat liver was also determined. About 60% of total amount of hypusine was present in the proteins of cytoplasmic and microsomal fractions and its relative concentration was high in the proteins of microsome and lysosome and low in mitochondria. In developing rat, the concentration of hypusine in the brain proteins was relatively high during the first 2 or 3 weeks of postnatal life and then decreased until adulthood. Its concentration in the liver proteins was highest at birth and then decreased continuously to the adult level.
Little is known about the pathologic characteristics of viral hepatitis A in humans. The authors compared the histologic features in liver biopsy specimens taken within 30 days of the onset of illness from 15 patients with hepatitis A and 14 patients with acute hepatitis B. In both hepatitis A and B, liver cell damage and necrosis were diffusely located, with accentuation in the centrilobular and midzonal areas in which ballooning degeneration and variation in cytoplasmic staining quality were observed frequently. One case of epidemic hepatitis A showed prominent periportal liver cell necrosis with inconspicuous centrilobular liver cell alterations. Kupffer cell mobilization was mild in hepatitis A, but more striking in hepatitis B. The portal inflammation was more pronounced and rich in plasma cells in hepatitis A than in hepatitis B. In summary, there were no major differences in the pathologic features of acute hepatitis A and B as sampled within 30 days of the onset of illness.

Portopulmonary venous anastomosis is a potential channel for systemic arterial embolization during embolization procedures for bleeding esophageal varices. To document the presence of such anastomoses, 15 patients with esophageal varices were studied by real-time contrast echocardiography combined with transhepatic cineportography. Cinefluorographic technique, which was applied for this purpose, occasionally failed to demonstrate the dynamic events in the left atrium because of rapid dilution of contrast medium. Echocardiography after the injection of dextrose solution into the gastric coronary vein allowed two-dimensional real-time images of contrast echoes in the left cardiac chambers. By combining these two methods, more reliable diagnostic information was obtained in five of the 15 patients studied.

The covalent binding ratio of cephalosporins (CEZ, CER, CET and CTX) to human serum albumin was examined at pH 7 and pH 10. The antibiotic equivalents were larger at pH 10 than at pH 7. The degree in the binding ratio of the 4 cephalosporins was CET greater than CER greater than CTX greater than CEZ at pH 7 and CER greater than CET greater than CTX greater than CEZ at pH 10.

Analysis of portal collaterals by percutaneous transhepatic portography combined with cine-fluorography disclosed porto-pulmonary venous anastomosis in four out of 22 patients with portal hypertension. The characteristic radiological features were a sudden spurt of contrast medium from a venous collateral located near the hilus of the left lung and counterclockwise movement of the flux of contrast medium, which was rapidly diluted; this was synchronized with the cardiac beat. The clinical significance of the porto-pulmonary anastomosis as a potential channel for the migration of embolizing materials used in the obliteration of varices is discussed.

A fatal female case of cerebral falciparum malaria who was accidentally, artificially and directly infected in Japan through nursing an imported falciparum malaria was experienced. These observations raised a question as to whether the disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) would occur in falciparum malaria. Then, 84 Congolese patients with uncomplicated falciparum malaria were studied on the coagulation. Serum fibrin-degradation products (FDP) levels were only slightly raised (10-40 microgram/ml) in 4 cases out of 84 (5%). Thrombocytopenia, elongation of prothrombin time and low fibrinogen concentration were found in 24 out of 57 (42%), in 11 out of 47 (23%) and in 11 out of 46 (24%), respectively. Relations between FDP level and the other observations were not significant. It is suggested that there is no evidence of intravascular coagulation at least in uncomplicated falciparum malaria.
