[Hemorrheological survey in a group with arteriosclerotic vascular disease treated with suloctidil].

In 17 patients affected by atherosclerotic vascular disease and showing in basal conditions a hyperviscosity state, we have monitored the main hemorheological determinants during treatment with Suloctidil. At the end of treatment carried out for 5 months the results showed that erythrocyte filterability was the only hemorheological determinant influenced. The possible causes of this action are therefore considered.

Clinical effect of human-fibroblast-derived (beta) interferon in treatment of adeno-virus epidemic keratoconjunctivitis and its complication.

The clinical studies reviewed here indicated the usefulness of topical application of Human-fibroblast-derived (Beta) interferon (HulFN-B) in treatment of Adeno-8 Epidemic-keratoconjunctivitis. A week treatment with 2-5 X 10(5) reference units daily doses, starting early as possible, reduced the length of the disease from 22 day to a week, and almost totally prevented the appearance of subepithelial keratitis which occurred in 57% of the control group. Possibly interferon should be given also prophylactically to individuals exposed to contagion. Our results encourage further investigation on the Hul FN-B use as a drug for treatment and prevention of viral infection.

[Erythrocyte filterability in diabetes mellitus (a survey carried out by two methods)].

In 45 diabetic patients (22 men and 23 women) subdivided in relation to type and vascular complications we have evaluated the erythrocyte filterability either by filtering whole blood (VRBC) or red blood cells suspended (5%) in autologous prefiltered plasma (deformability index). From the obtained results it is evident that VRBC is able to distinguish diabetic patients from normal subjects, whereas this does not happen with the deformability index. The explanation of these data is that the whole blood filterability, especially in diabetic patients, depends on the behavior of both cellular and plasmatic extraerythrocyte parameters.

Protein glaucoma as a possible mechanism in a case of glaucomatocyclitic crisis and periphlebitis.

A case of glaucomatocyclitis crisis with recurrent episodes of increased I0P, abnormal appearance of the angle structure and periphlebitis was presented. Some of these episodes involving first one eye and later occurring bilaterally were characterized by absence of flare in the anterior chamber. It is suggested that protein leakage following retinal periphlebitis or an inflammatory reaction involving the ciliary body might be the underlying mechanism for the elevated ocular pressure. The abnormal angle structure in our patient favored this protein glaucoma. A permanent increase in I0P observed at the latter stages of the disease indicate that the trabecular meshwork might be damaged irreversibly by protein glaucoma.

[Polycardiography in the diagnosis of latent cardiac insufficiency].

A group of heart patients and another group of healthy subjects have been studied and their systolic intervals (PEP-LVET - PEP/LVET ratio and the telediastolic index) evaluated using the mechanocardiographic system. In both long-standing and recent heart patients, the parameters studied showed significant deviations from the norm. These were even more marked after exercise on the ergonometer bicycle. Acute doses of digitalis reduced deviations from the norm observed under basal conditions and after exercise. Polycardiography, it is concluded, assists in the gathering of extremely valuable information about cardiac performance in relation to latent cardiac insufficiency. Especially useful information can be deduced from PEP indications and from the PEP/LVET ratio. The use of digitalis is suggested for physically active post-infarction subjects in order to give greater tolerance of physical exercise. The concept of long-term polygraphic studies as part of out-patient follow-ups on such patients is outlined.

Bacterial enzyme in viral infections: a new concept. The possible role of hyaluronidase in herpes simplex virus keratitis.

Data are presented to suggest that hyaluronidase can act as a virus spread factor in herpes simplex eye infection by both degrading tissue mucopolysaccharide and interfering with the antiviral effects of the interferon system. Most of herpes simplex eye infections are accompanied by contamination by various bacterial species capable of hyaluronidase production. Based on these data, a hypothetical model for the involvement of bacterial hyaluronidase in controlling the clinical course of ocular herpes simplex infection is suggested. The model can apply to other viral infections accompanied by bacterial contaminations, and provides a new therapeutic approach to such cases.

[Diffuse gastric pseudolymphoma or reactive lymphoid hyperplasia (RLH). Apropos of a case].

The authors report a case of superficial diffuse gastric pseudolymphoma studied by double contrast examination induced by pharmacologic agents and full filling of the stomach after compressive manoeuvres. The authors emphasize the importance of this nosologic entity and the problems of differentials diagnosis with all the stages of gastric cancer, with the peptic ulcer, with the healed ulcer, with lymphomas, with erosive gastritis, with nodular benign lesions. The stress that the certitude of diagnosis is given only by the histologic examination.

Choroidal lacunae and Aicardi's syndrome.

Three children with flexion spasms and an ophthalmologic picture characterised by choroidal lacunae are described. Aicardi's syndrome was diagnosed in two cases. A diagnosis of Aicardi's syndrome should include CT scan and/or pneumoencephalographic findings of partial or total agenesis of the corpus callosum and/or other anomalies of the interhemispheric structures. Choroidal lacunae are not entirely pathognomonic.

Effect of subconjunctival injection of hyaluronidase on outflow resistance in normal and in open-angle glaucomatous patients.

The effect of subconjunctivally injected hyaluronidase on ocular hydrodynamics was tested in 30 living human normal and 30 open-angle glaucoma eyes. It was found that after 1,500 TU of hyaluronidase injected subconjunctivally, the outflow resistance was significantly lowered: 34% in normal eyes, on the average; and by about 57% in the glaucomatous eyes. The possibility of either a higher amount of hyaluronic acid in the glaucomatous eyes or a normal amount of hyaluronic acid in the presence of compromised trabeculum is discussed. Clinical applications and further research are advocated.
