Automated retrieval of purine literature.

The scientific papers of the revised literature are not a unit when considered terminologically for automated retrieval. A 60-80% of the total valid references obtained through each data base was stored in the computer memory in virtually closed compartments although they belonged to the same material complex. The retrieval of these papers requires independent profiles series which although they give rise 14-28% duplicate references, the final yield can be increased by 100-200% of the yield obtained through the basic profile of the central subject considered.

Removal of guanidinosuccinic acid by hemodialysis.

The dialysis clearance of guanidinosuccinic acid (GSA) was measured in vitro and in vivo in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis. The in vitro (44 +/- 5 [SEM] ml/min) and in vivo (40 +/- 7 ml/min) clearances were similar to and lower than those of urea and creatinine. Plasma GSA concentrations predialysis (210 +/- 49 microgram/100 ml) were higher then those of controls ( less than 40 microgram/100 ml) and decreased substantially at the end of a single hemodialysis (percent decrease: 53 +/- 5). Marked increase of plasma GSA concentrations 12 h postdialysis were found in only two cases. An attempt was made to derive a single curve predicting plasma GSA decline during dialysis using the data obtained in these patients. The removal data suggest that the space of distribution of GSA approximates the extracellular fluid volume.

[Lumbar phlebography. Normal aspect and its value in diagnosis of herniated disk].

Our technique of lumbar phlebography involves selective catheterisation of the lateral sacral veins with or without catheterisation of the ascending lumbar veins. Injection of these veins, in association with abdominal compression, produces good filling of the intra-spinal epidural veins, particularly at L5-S1 level. The anatomy and radiological appearances of the epidural veins are discussed. The phlebographic signs of disc herniation are presented. The diagnostic potential of this technique seems very promising in disc pathology, especially in the diagnosis of L5-S1 herniation and lateral prolapse at all levels.
