New H-2-linked cell and serum antigens.

A system of two public serum antigens, alpha and delta, whose distribution in inbred strains of mice is different from that of all serum antigens known, is described. Their distribution in the H-2 congenic and in the recombinant inbred HTG strain indicates that they are determined by a gene(s) tightly linked to H-2. Backcross tests confirmed this; only 1.1-cM recombinants were found. The gene(s) is located at the D side of H-2. The immunogenicity of the serum specificities in A/Sn animals, but not in other strains, is sex-limited. These serum antigens are also present in most tissues and, in high amounts, in red blood cells. No sex differences in the absorbing capacity of tissues or the agglutinability of red blood cells were found. All these findings indicate that alpha and delta antigens belong to a new H-2-linked system. A relationship with the recently found new class I genes is suggested.

Liberation of electrolytes during the induced autolysis of Aspergillus niger.

The induced autolysis of Aspergillus niger was studied by suspending mycelia in water; after 120 hours there was a 50% reduction in dry weight. The kinetics of the liberation of electrolytes during autolysis was studied, and a positive correlation was observed between the electrical conductivity of the autolizate and autolysis loss of mycelium dry weight.

[C-reactive protein--determined by radial immunodiffusion and compared to the latex agglutination method].

C-reactive protein were assayed both with immunodiffusion and precipitation on latex C-reactive protein in 216 samples of sera from newborns with suspected septicemia. Both methods correlated well (r = 0.92) rendering the second one rather useful for early diagnosis of neonatal sepsis, since it produces results within a few minutes independent of complicated apparatus or trained personal.

Extracellular glucose-producing exodextranase of the yeast Lipomyces lipofer.

A dextran-hydrolysing enzyme from Lipomyces lipofer IGC 4042 was purified from the supernatant of cultures grown on a mineral medium with dextran, by ultrafiltration and gel filtration on Bio Gel A-0.5 m. This preparation gave only one band by disc gel electrophoresis. Glucose was the only product of dextran hydrolysis. Optimum pH and temperature for the activity of the enzyme were pH 4.5-5.0 and 45 degrees C, respectively. The enzyme was most stable over a pH range of 4.5-6.0, and after 2 hours at 50 degrees C maintained over 60% of its original activity. The molecular weight was 29,000 daltons and the isoelectric point was at pH 7. Km (45 degrees C, pH 5) for dextran T-40 was 1.2 X 10(-5) M. Glucose inhibited the enzyme competitively with a Ki (45 degrees C, pH 5) of 0.5 mM.

Site of conduction delay in children with catheter-induced right bundle branch block.

Eight cases of catheter-induced right bundle branch block (RBBB) in children during electrophysiologic studies are presented. Recording of right ventricular apical activation time (V-RVA) before and during the conduction delay allowed localization of the block along the course of the right bundle branch system. In the majority of patients, a significant lengthening of V-RVA was observed, indicating that proximal right bundle branch block is the most commonly induced type of conduction delay. Block was transient in all patients and terminated several minutes to 24 hours after its induction.

[Diagnostic value of C reactive protein in neonatal sepsis (author's transl)].

Seric levels of C reactive protein (C.R.P.) were determined in a series of 125 children under one month old. Of them, 75 were clinically healthy and 50 showed signs that suggested infection. In all this infants, in addition to C.R.P., different components of white blood cell differential count were determined, and a bacteriological study was undergone. Authors found high concentration of C.R.P. in 100% of children in which diagnosis of sepsis was bacteriologically confirmed. On the other hand, concentrations of this biological parameter were not substantially modified in newborns used in the control, nor in those other ones in which sepsis was not confirmed. Sensibility of C.R.P. showed itself significantly higher than other hematological indexes in study.

Immune response to glutaraldehyde-treated cells. I. Dissociation of immunological memory and antibody production.

Glutaraldehyde (GA)-treated sheep red blood cells (SRBC) or H-2-allogeneic spleen cells (SC), induced immunological memory with absent or markedly reduced primary antibody production. In contrast, a normal secondary response was obtained when GA-SRBC or GA-SC were given to mice primed with the corresponding untreated antigens. The secondary response of mice primed and boosted with GA-treated cells was relatively high with GA-SRBC, and negative or very low with GA-SC. Morphological studies of the fate of intraperitoneally injected cells showed that endocytosed GA-SRBC persisted much longer in peritoneal macrophages than untreated SRBC. Simultaneous challenge of mice with untreated and GA-treated SRBC revealed that phagocytosis and digestion of both types of cells in the same macrophage proceeded independently of each other. The primary response of mice receiving both SRBC and GA-SRBC was entirely similar to the response when SRBC alone was given.

Right subhepatic abscesses detected by technetium liver scans.

A focal defect at the inferior margin of the right lobe of the liver was found in two patients with subhepatic abscesses. This defect must be differentiated from the porta hepatis and the gallbladder fossa. When technetium liver scans are obtained in patients with usspect abdominal abscesses, the inferior margin of the right lobe of the liver should be carefully scrutinized so that right subhepatic abscesses will not be overlooked.

[Protracted diarrhea. Etiopathogenia and management (author's transl)].

For the purpose of twelve cases on protracted diarrhea, the etiopathogenia from this illness is reviewed and the tolerance and inconvenients of treatment with intravenous feeding is assessed, being the authors addicted of employing antibiotics, cholestyramine, diets free of disaccharides and fundamental diets; in such a manner that parenteral nutrition for its inconvenients and complications should only be used in case of failing the rest of therapeutic methods.
