Developments in anaesthesia for intracranial surgery over the past 35 years are illustrated by a comparison of personal practice in 1943-45 and in 1977-79, with some reference to techniques developed during the intervening years.
An unusual increase in cases of nutritional myopathy in sheep hoggs occurred in the spring of 1979 in the Scottish Borders. The usual overwinter diet for the area was turnips supplemented by home grown cereal, which is grossly deficient in selenium and vitamin E. This year the deficiency was further compounded by a cold wet winter, high stocking densities and certain management procedures, which probably caused the sudden upsurge of cases of myopathy.

Nine of 15 housed red deer developed an acute disease. Six died and three were killed when severely affected. The clinical and post mortem changes suggested a diagnosis of malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) which was consistent with the pantropic lymphoproliferative histopathological lesions observed. Attempts to isolate an agent or transmit the condition to cattle failed. The relation of the vasculitis to the pathogenesis of the disease and the susceptibility of red deer are discussed.

A major problem of the use of multiple choice examinations is the inherent difficulty of the questions, a fact which cannot be assessed in relation to questions not previously used. Questions which have been used during previous examinations, however, will have an available measure of the difficulty in the form of candidates' previous scores. The performance of candidates in a current examination can be compared with that in a previous examination. On the strength of these differences it is possible to decide whether the candidates in any single examination are better prepared than their predecessors or less well prepared. Pass marks can be appropriately adjusted.
