[Routes of spread of the current rabies epizoonosis in Europe].

The present report describes the spreading paths of the rabic epidemic that is rapidly reaching Italy from Central Europe. The epidemiologic situation of neighbouring countries is examined and the sanitary measures undertaken in Europe against epidemic are compared.

[Isolation of Salmonella in the Piedmont from 1975 to 1978, with designation of rare strains and evaluation of the frequency of the serotypes].

In the present study the data concerning the isolation of Salmonella strains in Regione Piemonte during the years 1975-1978 are reported. During this period, using serological methods 2934 Salmonella strains have been typed which resulted to belong to 69 different serotypes. We have also compared the frequency of the different serotypes in the years 1975, 1976, 1977-'78.

[Various biological characteristics of Sindbis virus].

The hemagglutinating activity of Sindbis virus on untreated or tripsinized blood red cells of some animal species was assessed. In some cases tripsinization increases the red cell sensitivity to viral hemagglutinin. Interferon (IFN) production induced by Sindbis virus on human WISH, mouse L-929 and chicken FEP cells was similar in all three cases. The effects of the temperature on virus replication were studied. Optimal growth was seem to take place at 37 degrees C. These data suggest that the viral pathogenic effect in humans in contrast to the asymptomatic infection in reservoirs is not related to differences in IFN production, but could be due to differences in host body temperature.

[Differences of capacity of human erythrocytes of newborn infants and adults and trypsin-treated erythrocytes to bind rubella virus hemagglutinin].

Rubella virus hemagglutinating (HA) antigen shows different titers against non treated, trypsin-modified and cord blood human erythrocytes. Trypsin-modified erythrocytes give titers eleven fold higher, and cord blood red cells sixteen fold higher than those seen with the non treated cells. These differences in sensitivity agree with a different ability to bind HA antigen: with an excess of antigen cord blood erythrocytes bind two, and trypsin-modified erythrocytes three times as much antigen was bound by non treated cells. The amount of bound antigen shows little or no dependence on 4 degrees or 37 degrees C temperatures.

[In vivo interferon-inducing capacity of a multibacterial extract: prospective new use].

We studied IFN inducing ability on syngenic C3H mice of a multibacterial antigenic extract consisting of different strains of following species: Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Aerobacter aerogenes, Proteus vulgaris. A dose-dependent IFN production was demonstrated and two peaks of circulating IFN were observed few hours and two days after i.v. inoculation. Per os administration only at high doses induced evaluable levels of IFN in the circulation.

[Adhesion of Streptococci to different types of cells].

15 Streptococcus strains of different groups and types were assessed to evaluate the capacity to adhere to tissue culture cells "in vitro" (WISH, MDCK, RK-13 cells). This ability is not similar for different cells and not type-specific in group A Streptococci, but it seems more elevated in M+ strains. The microscopic technique generally agree to the radioactive one, nevertheless using both methods it is possible to improve the results.

Suppression of PHA-induced IFN-gamma production in BALB/c mice.

In the present paper we report some evidences of negative genetic control of the IFN-gamma production following stimulation with phytohaemagglutinin both in vivo and in vitro. C3H mice were good IFN-gamma producers whereas BALB/c and (BALB/c X C3H) F1 mice were non producers. The distribution of the capacity to produce significant levels of IFN-gamma in [(C3H X BALB/c) X (C3H X BALB/c)] F2 mice is compatible with the hypothesis of a pleomorphic negative control.

[Assay of IgA specific anti-Trichomonas vaginalis in vaginal secretions by indirect immunofluorescence].

30 vaginal secreta of women affected by acute and chronic trichomoniasis from the Gynaecological Hospital S. Anna of Turin were examined. In the same secreta the specific IgA anti Trichomonas vaginalis were detected using indirect immunofluorescence and titered on LC-Partigen IgA immunodiffusion plates. Only in 30% of these cases a correlation between immunodiffusion and fluorescence test resulted.
