"In the present paper some socio-economic determinants of female nuptiality in India have been discussed. An integrated path analysis approach is adopted to ascertain the direct, indirect and joint effect of the socio-economic factors on the age at marriage of females in rural and urban areas of various states of India. From the analysis, it became evident that effective literacy is the most dominant factor influencing the age at marriage of the females. Poverty is also a contributing factor in preventing a rise in the age at marriage."
The activities of two enzymes of the serotonin biosynthetic pathway, namely tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH) and 5-hydroxytryptophan-decarboxylase (5-HTP-D), were determined in the cockroach, Periplaneta americana, brain using radiometric techniques, significant levels of both enzymes were found. p-Chlorophenylalanine (PCPA) inhibited brain TPH activity strongly both in vitro and in vivo. In vitro, 10 mM PCPA reduced the TPH activity by 76% and in vivo either 15 micrograms/g or 30 micrograms/g of PCPA inhibited brain TPH activity by 80-85%. The activity of 5-HTP-D enzyme was inhibited significantly in vivo by 3-hydroxybenzylhydrazine, commonly known as NSD-1015. A recovery in the activity of 5-HTP-D enzyme was observed 12 h after 50 micrograms/g of NSD-1015 but 100 micrograms/g caused an inhibition lasting for the 24 h period studied.
A comparative study of the influence of EDTA and its metal complexes with Fe, Co, and Ce on lactic acid fermentation by Lactobacillus delbrueckii was done. It was observed that EDTA alone and its complex with Ce could increase the yield of lactic acid up to 1--2%, while complexes of EDTA with Fe and Co enhanced the yield up to 4--5%.
The influence of uranium, thorium, zirconium, and thallium (I) on fermentation production of lactic acid from molasses by Lacstobacillus bulgaricus AU was studied. It was found that thorium, at lower experimental concentration, and zirconium, at higher experimental concentration, stimulate the acid-producing activity of the bacteria, while uranium and thallium reduce. it.
An attempt was made to study the activity of Lactobacillus delbrueckii under the influence of certain trace elements, viz. Tl, U, Th, and Zr. From the results, it was inferred that Tl has comparatively more stimulating effect on the acid-producing activity of the bacteria than U, Th, and Zr.
Lactic acid fermentation from molasses by L. bulgaricus AU in the presence of caffeine and ammonium fluoride was studied. It was found that caffeine had a stimulating effect only at lower concentration (0.001%-0.002%), while at high concentration the acid-producing activity of the bacteria was considerably depressed. Ammonium fluoride, at a concentration of 0.001%-0.005%, had a stimulating effect on the activity of the bacteria, maximum activity was observed at a concentration of 0.003%.
The production of lactic acid from molasses by mixed populations of (1) Lactobacillus bulgaricus AU (isolated from curd) and L. casei (supplied by NCL, Poona-8, India) and (2) L. bulgaricus, L. delbrueckii (supplied by NCL, Poona-8, India), and L. casei was studied. It has been found that association of L. bulgaricus with L. casei slightly enhances the yield of lactic acid, while the mixed population of L. bulgaricus, L. delbrueckii, and L. casei is as effective as L. bulgaricus alone.
Lemierre's syndrome is characterized by acute pharyngotonsillitis with secondary thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein which is complicated by multiple metastatic foci of infections. This syndrome is caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum in healthy young persons and is extremely rare in occurrence. A pre-school child with Lemierre's syndrome is reported. The diagnostic and therapeutic aspects are emphasized in order to sensitize physicians to this uncommon condition.
Studies were carried out to evaluate solid-state fermentation (SSF) for the upgradation of the nutritional quality of coffee husk by degrading the caffeine and tannins present in it. SSF was carried out by Aspergillus niger LPBx in a glass column fermenter using factorial design experiments and surface response methodology to optimize bioprocess parameters such as the substrate pH and moisture content and aeration rate. The first factorial design showed that the moisture content of the substrate and aeration rate were significant factors for the degradation of toxic compounds, which was confirmed by the second factorial design too. The kinetic study showed that the degradation of toxic compounds was related to the development of the mold and its respiration and also to the consumption of the reducing sugars present in coffee husk. From the values obtained experimentally for the oxygen uptake rate and CO(2) evolved, the system determined a biomass yield (Y(x/o)) of 3.811 (g of biomass).(g of consumed O(2))(-1) and a maintenance coefficient (m) of 0.0031 (g of consumed O(2)).(g biomass of biomass)(-1).h(-1). The best results on the degradation of caffeine (90%) and tannins (57%) were achieved when SSF was carried out with a 30 mL.min(-1) aeration rate using coffee husk having a 55% initial moisture content. The inoculation rate did not affect the metabolization of the toxic compounds by the fungal culture. After SSF, the protein content of the husk was increased to 10.6%, which was more than double that of the unfermented husk (5.2%).
This paper revisits and extends an inquiry on the age-at-menarche differential fecundity hypothesis. Earlier studies have interpreted the difference in the onset of female pubertal maturation as indicative of biological differences in fecundity between early and late menarcheal women. Using the WFS data for Sudan, the authors address the entire reproductive life of the women in terms of their transition from one parity to the next, as well as the speed with which birth intervals are closed, as a way to infer biological fecundity among the women. The study concludes that there is little evidence that early menarcheal women are more fecund than their late puberty counterparts.
Ten Aspergillus oryzae strains were screened in solid substrate fermentation for alpha-amylase production on spent brewing grain (SBG) and on corn fiber. SBG proved to be a better substrate for enzyme production than corn fiber. A Plackett-Burman experimental design was used to optimize the medium composition for the best strain. Solid substrate fermentation on optimized medium with A. oryzae NRRL 1808 (=ATCC 12892) strain in stationary 500-mL Erlenmeyer flask culture yielded 4519 U of alpha-amylase/g of dry matter substrate in 3 d. The whole solid substrate fermentation material (crude enzyme, in situ enzyme) may be considered a cheap biocatalytic material for animal feed rations and for bioalcohol production from starchy materials.
The incidence of enteric fever caused by Salmonella enterica serotype Paratyphi A has been increasing in India since 1996. In 1998, the incidence of enteric fever caused by drug- resistant S. Paratyphi A abruptly increased in the New Delhi region. In the first 6 months of 1999, 32% of isolates were resistant to both chloramphenicol and cotrimoxazole and another 13% were resistant to more than two antibiotics.
