Changes in beta-endorphin-like-immunoreactivity in the blood plasma of ewes during estrous cycle and in anestrous ewes under stress condition.

In the light of evidence for endogenous opioid peptide involvement in the modulation of pituitary hormone release and in the body's overall response to stress, the aim of the present study was to determine the beta-endorphin-like immunoreactivity (beta-END-LI) in the blood plasma of ewes during different phases of the estrous cycle and in anestrous ewes subjected to acute or intermittent prolonged footshocks. The highest concentration of beta-END-LI was found in the blood plasma during the luteal phase and lowest one during the follicular stage at proestrus. Nearly equal concentrations of beta-END-LI were determined at estrus and metestrus; their values were over 10 times lower than those observed in the luteal phase. Acute stress caused transient increase of beta-END-LI in the blood plasma of anestrous ewes, with a peak after 15-30 min of footshock application and changes in the molar ratio of beta-LPH to beta-endorphin. No apparent increase in mean daily levels of beta-END-LI was noted in ewes subjected to prolonged footshocking; however, on the day after stimulation beta-END-LI concentration decreased below control values. These results indicate that: 1. secretion of beta-END-LI varies during different phases of the estrous cycle, 2. acute stress is a potent activator for beta-END-LI secretion, 3. no apparent increase of beta-END-LI in the blood plasma of ewes subjected to prolonged stress concomitant with accumulation of this material in pituitary (Polkowska and Przekop, 1988) supports the idea, that prolonged stress augments the synthesis of beta-END-LI but not its release.

Subcortical afferents to the interstitial nucleus of Cajal: an anatomical retrograde tracing study in the rabbit.

Organization of brainstem projections to the interstitial nucleus of Cajal (INC) in the rabbit has been studied using the method of retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase or wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase conjugate. Injections of tracers into INC resulted in bilateral labelling in the medial terminal nucleus of the accessory optic tract, medial region of the zona incerta, vestibular nuclei (superior, medial, inferior), rostral portion of the prepositus nucleus and several nuclei of the pontine and medullary reticular formation. Retrograde labelling on the contralateral side was noted in all 4 deep cerebellar nuclei, the lateral vestibular nucleus, group Y, the rostral interstitial nucleus of the medial longitudinal fascicle, INC and mesencephalic reticular formation dorsal and lateral to the red nucleus. Cells of origin for the ipsilateral afferents of INC were found only in the nucleus of the posterior commissure. These data are discussed in relation to other morphological and physiological studies of afferent connectivity of INC in other species.

Topographic and zonal pattern of olivocerebellar projection to the paramedian lobule in the rabbit: an experimental study with an HRP retrograde tracing method.

Distribution of neurons in the inferior olive (IO) projecting to the paramedian lobule (PML) was studied in rabbits by means of retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). HRP was injected into various regions of different folia of the PML. Findings indicate zonal and to some extent topographic organization in olivocerebellar projections to PML folia. The neurons in corresponding areas of dorsal (dlPO) and ventral lamina (vlPO) of the principal olive (PO) project to composite zones D (D1 + D2) in sublobule f: medial, intermediate and lateral. In addition, the caudal part of the medial accessory olive (MAO) projects to the most laterally located zone (C2-lateral) and the caudal part of the dorsal accessory olive (DAO) to the most lateral zone (C3) in sublobule f. The middle part of the DAO sends projections to zone C1 located medially in sublobules d-a. The rostral and caudal parts of the DAO send projections to zone C3 in sublobules a and f, respectively. The rostral, middle and adjacent caudal parts of MAO, with no clear topographic organization, project to broad zone C2 in sublobules e-b. The neurons in restricted areas of the caudomedial part of the dlPO and vlPO, probably intermingled with those supplying the composite medial zone D in sublobule f, project to sublobules e-b to terminate in zones D1 and D2, respectively.

Elements of the health culture of Polish society.

The purpose of this article is to characterize Polish society from the point of view of health culture. The article is based on research conducted in 1978 on the representative national sample. In that research we sought to trace the dependence of styles of being sick, methods of treatment, and the entire related sphere of behavior on the following factors: socio-demographic characteristics of patients, with special attention to their position in social structure; availability of medical care service--in reality and perceived subjectively; estimation of the state of health of patients; confidence in medicine as a social institution, system of knowledge and in health care service; medical knowledge of patients; availability of other sources of help, alternative to official medicine.

[Factors causing fatigue in female industrial workers].

In 1698 female workers aged 18-45 a relationship was sought between subjective symptoms of fatigue and factors which directly or indirectly could affect them: age, Hb level, relative body weight, health status, abundance of menstrual bleedings. In 199 women the number of sleep hours and stress in occupational work was taken into account. A strong relation was found between fatigue and age of women. The role of the remaining factors was evaluated after standardisation for age. The occurrence of fatigue was highly statistically dependent on the health status and abundance of menstrual bleedings. The other relations were less pronounced.

Biosynthesis, in vivo, of gonadotropin-releasing hormone in the hypothalamus of normal and ovariectomized female rats.

Normal female and ovariectomized rats were infused into the 3rd ventricle with [3H]glycine or [3H]alanine. Some rats were pretreated with cycloheximide. Hypothalamus, anterior pituitary and fragments of cortex were excised, homogenized, extracted and treated with specific antiserum to GnRH, bound to Sepharose. The radioactivity of immuno-absorbed products was counted either immediately of after extraction and thin-layer chromatography by using two different solvent systems. With the two systems, the location of the immuno-absorbed radioactivity always coincided with the spot of synthetic GnRH. Our results show that [3H]glycine was incorporated, as a function of time, into GnRH isolated from rat hypothalami. The amount was incorporated, as a function of time, into GnRH isolated from rat hypothalami. The amount of radioactivity incorporated into hypothalami from diestrous-I rats was similar to that of ovariectomized rats and twice as high as in late proestrous rats. Only minute amounts of radioactivity were incorporated into the immuno-absorbed product. Cycloheximide inhibited incorporation of [3H]glycine into the immuno-absorbed product to the same extent as its incorporation into the total protein from the hypothalamus. Our experimental results support the hypothesis of ribosomal mechanisms being involved in the biosynthesis of GnRH. They also suggest that the rate of accumulation of newly synthesized labeled GnRH is of the same order in the hypothalamus of ovariectomized rats as in diestrous-I rats.

Cognitive development and social policy.

The city of Warsaw was razed at the end of World War II and rebuilt under a socialist government whose policy was to allocate dwellings, schools, and health facilities without regard to social class. Of the 14,238 children born in 1963 and living in Warsaw, 96 percent were given the Raven's Progressive Matrices Test and an arithmetic and a vocabulary test in March to June of 1974. Information was collected on the families of the children, and on characteristics of schools and city districts. Parental occupation and education were used to form a family factor, and the district data were collapsed into two factors, one relating to social marginality, and the other to distance from city center. Analysis showed that the initial assumption of even distribution of family, school, and district attributes was reasonable. Mental performance was unrelated either to school or district factors; it was related to parental occupation and education in a strong and regular gradient. It is concluded that an egalitarian social policy executed over a generation failed to override the association of social and family factors with cognitive development that is characteristic of more traditional industrial societies.
