A case of a tumor of the upper lid involving the bons in a 6 1/2 year old body is reported. Histology revealed a solitary eosinophilic granuloma. The classification of this systemic disease which almost always shows an orbital manifestation is discussed.
If it is necessary to prescribe contact lenses for children, this correction should be made as soon as possible. As a consequence of the development of soft (hydrophile) lenses, the above mentioned group of patients has increased considerably. In any case, a monolateral aphakia as well as a manifest anisometropia should be corrected by a contact lense to avoid amblyopia, heterotropia and loss of stereoscopic vision. Usually soft lenses are well tolerated, so that patients suffering from aphakia as well as hyperopia should always use this type of lense. Nevertheless, the hard lense still has its indication in treating myopia and high astigmatism.
63 patients suspicious of having intraocular tumors underwent ultrasonic investigations. An A-Scan Unit 7200 MA (Kretztechnik, Zipf/Austria) was used, standardized by the citrated-blood method recommended by Ossoinig. Out of the 63 eyes investigated 45 were enucleated and studied histologically. Here ultrasonic diagnosis of uveal melanoma could be prouved histologically in 14 cases. In 31 cases the ultrasonic method failed to give detailed information about type of tumorous tissue. Here histology revealed 22 melanomas of the uveal tract, 4 retinal dysplasias, 4 retinoblastomas and one case of Coats disease.

The computer-aided tomography system (EMI-Scan) represents a new X-ray method in neuroradiology. Some cases of various space occupying retrobulbar orbit processes are presented, and it is demonstrated that this method is also well suited to the diagnosis of orbit diseases. Physicotechnical basis, technique of examination, the indication for computer tomography and the diagnostic possibilities are described.
The clinical course of orbital rhabdomyosarcoma is described in seven male children. A survey of the literature on the subject is given. Particular attention is paid to certain diagnostic problems of this most frequent orbital malignant primary in childhood. An adequate combination therapy which results in cure in more than half of the patients should be employed provided that an exact morphological diagnosis is made; this still causes often great difficulty. Electron microscopy is of great value in distinguishing this type of tumor from other malignancies, including the so-called reticulosarcoma. In comparison with the case material of other authors, there was a relatively high rate of late deaths in our patients.
An equidensometric procedure is presented for achieving objective evaluation of ultrasonic B-scan pictures. Using special film (Agfacontour film) it is possible to select and show individually areas of equal brightness appearing on the B-scan, so called "equidensites". This can be done by colouring each area differently or by using a system of symbols. There is a description of the way in which the Agfacontour film works and is processed. Clinical evidence can be provided to prove the equidensometric evaluation of ultrasonic B-pictures of the eye can offer a considerable amount of additional information.
119 patients who were believed to suffer from orbital tumors were investigated by A-scan ultrasonic studies. 67 turned out to have significant signs of an orbital tumor, 52 were found to be unsuspicious. In all of the 32 surgical procedures, which were additionally performed, the ultrasonic diagnosis could always be verified. Moreover 13 ultrasonic studies led to certain pathological specifications of the tumor and 10 of them could be proved true by histology later on. This paper discuss the advantage of the A-scan ultrasound investigations of the orbit. The efficiency concerning an ultrasonic specification of the tumorous tissue is to be emphasized.
Report on a case with extreme swelling of the upper- and lowerlids, which recurred repeatedly for thirteen years, with unsettled etiology and which did not respond to every conservative therapy. Surgical excision and biopsy showed histological changes similar Melkersson-Rosenthal-syndrome. But it must have been an abortive form, as other symptoms, were missing.
