Quantitative determination of anti-hydatid antibodies by ELISA without a colorimetric reading.

A simple and sensitive immunoenzymatic technique for titration of anti-E. granulosus antibodies is described. The method employs the Diffusion-In-Gel-ELISA (DIG-ELISA) technique that needs no plate reader and thus could be widely used in endemic areas. Seventy five human sera, including patients with hydatid disease (26), other parasitic diseases (20), infectious diseases (9), non-infectious diseases (4) and healthy donors (16), were assayed to evaluate diagnostic specificity. The results obtained indicate that DIG-ELISA exhibits sensitivity and specificity similar to other serological techniques for hydatid diagnosis, and in addition improves simplicity.

Lack of interspecies barriers in anti-Id stimulated antibody production against Echinococcus granulosus antigens.

Polyclonal human anti-hydatid antibodies were affinity purified from a hydatid patient serum and used to produce a rabbit anti-idiotypic serum. These anti-Id antibodies cross-reacted in ELISA with sera from 11 of 12 hydatid patients studied and with 13 infected or immunized mice sera. All mice primed and boosted with anti-Id produced anti-hydatid antibodies in the primary response and exhibited an increase in antibody titre after a booster injection. The same effect was observed with mice primed with antigen and boosted with anti-Id, although these mice exhibited higher antibody titres. A significant idiotype repertoire is shared by anti-hydatid antibodies produced by different individuals of the same or different species, and anti-Id raised against those antibodies behave as surrogate antigens producing a normal primary and secondary response in animals of different species from that used to isolate the Id.

Projections of the nucleus accumbens in the cat.

Due to the recent advances in knowledge on the function of the limbic system it would be wise to consider this system as being widely distributed throughout the diencephalic and mesencephalic levels as well as the forebrain. Numerous regions have been discovered that are related to the limbic structures in anatomical and functional respects. According to Koikegami et al. (1967), it would be adequate to divide this system into two main categories--the major limbic rim or the structure proper and the paralimbic structures. The former defined phylogenetically and ontogenetically as those structures around the third ventricle such as: the hippocampus, septum, dentate gyrus, fimbria hippocampi, anterior and posterior cingulate gyri, area paraolfactoria, amygdala and Diagonal Band of Broca. The paralimbic structures may represent those brain regions, which have direct connections or functional correlations with the limbic formation proper. These areas include the posterior orbital gyrus, insula, nucleus accumbens, head of the caudate, nucleus habenula, nucleus interpendencularis, nucleus pulvinaris thalami, intralaminar and anterior thalamic nucleus, preoptic area, hypothalamic nuclei, mammillary body, subthalamus, limbic midbrain area of Nauta, temporal lobe pole, superior temporal gyrus, praecuneus, nucleus dorsalis et profundis tegmenti of Gudden and claustrum. In the present paper we will deal with the projections of the nucleus accumbens. This nucleus was described by Meynert (1872) as the anterior polar region of the caudate nucleus. Kappers describes the nucleus accumbens in 1908 as the nucleus accumbens septi and considers it as a part of the striatum. Later on, the histological studies of Brochaus (1942) relate a part of the nucleus with olfactory functions, and he describes another part, which is very well developed in microsmatic mammals and in anosmic mammals like the dolphin. Szteyn (1960) describes two main areas, the accumbens septi and the accumbens caudate. Nevertheless, the accumbens constitutes a very important region of the paralimbic system and seems to play an important role in some behavioral patterns.

Group B streptococcus and premature rupture of membranes and preterm delivery.

In a population of 1,050 pregnant women the effect of maternal colonization by group B Streptococcus on premature rupture of membranes (PROM), preterm delivery, and low weight was analyzed. A significant increment was found of the prevalence of PROM for patients colonized in the vagina and/or the rectum (26.4%) versus noncarrier patients (17.8%). In vaginal and/or rectal group B Streptococcus carriers, in whom group B Streptococcus was also isolated from the cervical culture, the rate of PROM was higher (41.7%), while when the cervical culture was negative, the PROM was similar to noncarriers. THere were no significant differences with respect to colonization conditions regarding the incidence of preterm delivery or the different preterm delivery indicators analyzed.

[Respiratory distress in an addict on parenteral drugs with tricuspid endocarditis due to Staphylococcus aureus and with Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia].

A case of a female, intravenous (I.V.) drug user with respiratory distress syndrome as first manifestation 24 hours after admission, is presented. The clinical suspicion of tricuspid valve endocarditis associated to Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia arose because this patient was a member of a high-risk AIDS group. An empiric treatment was applied and the diagnosis was made posterior to this. We comment on the unusual coincidence of both pathologic states, highlighting the early diagnosis and treatment.

[Basal cell carcinoma of the external auditory canal].

The meagre figures of malignancies in the outer canal, especially basal cell carcinoma, offer the AA. the opportunity of this communication. Owing to the small size of the growth it was successfully treated with X-ray therapy.

[Stapedectomy. Audiometric considerations and results].

Perusal of the last 100 stapedectomies done in the ENT Service of the AA. (Social Security Hospital. Cuenca) displaying audiometric outcomes. Considerations related to the etiology, the surgery and other items of the disease are dealt with.

[Facial paralysis caused by compression by a tumor].

Tumors on the course of the 7th nerve are seldom met. Inthe present case the growth caused the palsy and showed, at surgical removal, single apposition to the trunk. Surprisingly on microscopic examination the detached mass disclosed normal striated muscle. The localization in the middle of the vertical portion of the facial canal of such a tumor, so far from other muscular structures, makes this case a rare anomaly.

[Tumors of the lip].

The AA report two cases of reconstruction of the lower lip (after removal of the growth) following the Bernard-Brown procedure. They discuss other technics for lip repair. In both instances the achieved results were good, both aesthetically and functionally, attaining the goals of this surgery: normal aspect of the lip borderline, good sensitivity, tonus of the muscles, and also suitable size of the mouth. All the objectives were accomplished in a single operation.

Tau factor polymers are similar to paired helical filaments of Alzheimer's disease.

Tau factor, upon urea treatment, is able to polymerize in vitro. These polymers are composed of tau factor as shown by immunogold staining. The structure of tau polymers is very similar to that of paired helical filaments (PHFs) of Alzheimer's disease in their dimensions as well as in their periodicity. Metal shadowing of both polymers shows a similar twisting. Also, similar peptide maps were found for tau factor and a 33 kDa protein that is the main component of our PHF preparations.

Alzheimer Disease↗

A modified form of microtubule-associated tau protein is the main component of paired helical filaments.

Paired helical filaments, which are present in the brain of Alzheimer's disease patients have been isolated and characterized. Treatment of the filaments with reducing agents and detergents extracts several proteins from these structures. The remaining filaments are composed mainly of a protein with molecular weight of 33 kDa suggesting that this protein is the core component of these filaments. Peptide mapping using trypsin and endoproteinase Arg-C revealed that the 33 kDa protein, was a modified form of tau protein present in normal human brain.

Testosterone induces the expression of the uteroglobin gene in rabbit epididymis.

Uteroglobin was characterized in the rabbit epididymis by radioimmunoassay and electrophoretic determinations, as well as by analysis of its mRNA by means of 'Northern blot' and nuclease-S1 mapping. Treatment of sexually immature rabbits with testosterone during 5 days increased up to 8-fold the concentrations of both uteroglobin and its mRNA in the epididymis. The amounts of beta-tubulin mRNA, measured as reference, remained unchanged after the hormonal treatment. The synthesis of uteroglobin occurred mainly in the middle region of the epididymis, progressively decreasing toward the distal part of the organ. Uteroglobin was not detected in the testis by radioimmunoassay. The results are discussed in relation to a possible role of uteroglobin in the reproductive functions.

Measurement of the endometrial cavity length using Wing Sound I.

Parity is a factor that influences the axial length of the uterus. The knowledge of different measurements will help in the fitting of the IUD. In this paper, 657 cavimetries have been studied in relation to parity. A progressive increase of both the total uterine length and the endometrial cavity length have been observed in relation to parity, but none regarding the cervical length.

Differential regulation of c-Ha-ras and c-Ki-ras gene expression in rat mammary gland.

Steady-state levels of c-Has-ras and c-Ki-ras RNA in gestating and lactating rat mammary gland were measured. The c-Ha-ras-specific RNA level increased during gestation and declined with the onset of lactation. On the contrary, the level of c-Ki-ras RNA remained unchanged both during gestation and lactation. There was no change in the level of ras-transcripts in either growing or regressing 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene-induced mammary tumors. Intravenous infusion of prolactin or implantation of pituitary-derived tumor, which secretes mammotropic hormone, in virgin female rats resulted in decreased levels of c-Ha-ras RNA and no change in c-Ki-ras RNA levels. Our results suggest the transcription of c-Ha-ras and c-Ki-ras genes is differentially regulated.
