Efforts to deter women from deciding to terminate their pregnancies take their toll on both women and health care providers. Unable to overturn Roe v Wade and ban abortion outright, opponents have sought to prevent women from obtaining abortions by imposing restrictions and burdening service providers. Among the most common measures adopted at the state level are mandatory delay, state-scripted information, and parental notification requirements, while both federal and state policy makers have restricted Medicaid coverage for abortion. In its 1992 decision in Planned Parenthood v Casey, the US Supreme Court made clear that states may not criminalize abortion prior to viability or allow anyone to veto a woman's decision to terminate her pregnancy. Nonetheless, the Court adopted a less protective "undue burden" standard for reviewing the constitutionality of restrictions on a woman's right to choose. In the wake of Casey, courts and legislative bodies continue to grapple with the extent to which the abortion choice is protected under federal and state constitutions. Meanwhile, women and health care providers are forced to endure the hardships caused by restrictive laws and policies.

Nurse educators, searching for the best use of technology to facilitate the development and administration of tests, are confronted with a wide variety of computerized test development programs from which to choose. This article provides a comparative review of seven commercially available computerized test development programs: A+ Test Manager and Test Taker, AUTOGENT, CATSoftware System, LXR*TEST, MicroCAT, Question Designer for Windows, and Test Construction Set. Criteria for evaluating these programs including ease of use, psychometric properties, security, and system requirements are discussed. Issues associated with the implementation of computerized test development and computerized test administration are considered. It is imperative that nurse educators understand their goals for computerized test development and administration in the context of their own setting before purchasing a program.
An X;17 translocation breakpoint was characterised in a 5-year-old female with hypomelanosis of Ito (HI) who exhibits characteristic hypopigmented lesions, psychomotor retardation, and choroid plexus papilloma. A YAC clone containing the locus DXS1 from Xq12 was found by fluorescence in situ hybridisation to cross the translocation breakpoint. Cosmid clones positive for DXS1 were used to identify and clone the translocation junction fragment from the patient's DNA. A chromosome-17-specific DNA fragment was isolated and used to identify cosmid clones crossing the translocation from chromosome 17p13. Exon trapping identified two known genes from chromosome 17: FMR1L2 (the fragile X mental retardation syndrome like protein 2) and SHBG (human sex hormone-binding globulin). Mapping the FMR1L2 and SHBG genes showed that neither gene was disrupted by the translocation.
