The axial relationship between the collagen and mineral componetns in calcified turkey leg tendon was investigated using low-angle X-ray and neutron diffraction. The results indicate that the mineral is arranged with the same axial periodicity as the collagen and occupies the gap region of the collagen structure.

A family study of a patient with idiopathic hemochromatosis using noninvasive techniques is presented. All 6 of the patient's asymptomatic children had an increase in transferrin saturation and/or an increase in the absorption of Co57. The Co57 absorption test was the most sensitive index of family involvement since one of the children had an increase in absorption at a time when transferring saturation was normal. The family data strongly support the hereditary nature of the disorder, with the mode of inheritance not clearly established from the available data.
Current knowledge of rabies is reviewed, with emphasis on recent developments in virology, immunology, pathogenesis, treatment, and prophylaxis. Although only a few cases of human rabies occur annually in the United States, the infection is enzootic in wildlife, and an estimated 30,000 possible exposures requiring treatment occur each year. Rabies belongs to the family rhabdovirus, and its molecular anatomy and biochemistry of replication have been described in some detail. There have been advances in measurement of antirabies antibodies, and techniques for measuring cellular immune response have recently been developed. Early stages of infection are more fully understood, with a hypothesis to explain peripheral sequestration of virus during prolonged incubation periods. Rabies was once thought to be uniformly f fatal, but a few patients have survived with aggressive supportive measures. A newly developed vaccine (soon to be licensed in the United States) has been shown highly potent for preexposure immunization and promises to be very effective for postexposure prophylaxis. Current Public Health Service recommendations for postexposure treatment are summarized. Recent research has suggested a novel approach to control of wildlife rabies through oral immunization.

A patient with Salmonella typhi bacteremia was sucessfully treated with cefamandole, a new cephalosporin derivative. Infection has not recurred during 6 months of follow-up observation. Minimum inhibitory concentrations and minimum bactericidal concentrations of cefamandole, cephalothin, ampicillin, and chloramphenicol were compared against 26 strains of S. typhi. All the strains were susceptible to cefamandole in vitro. Seven of the strains were resistant to chloramphenicol, and another seven were resistant to both chloramphenicol and ampicillin. Cefamandole appears to warrant further clinical trial for the treatment of typhoid fever.
Thyroparathyroidectomy in the rat results in decreased plasma calcium and magnesium and increased phosphorus. The associated bone changes are decreased calcium, hydroxyproline, carbonate, and wholebone density. Bone magnesium, sodium, mineral density, and percent crystallinity are increased. The delayed matrix formation and mineralization previously identified by histologic techniques are herein characterized by direct measurement as arrest of the normal increase of hydroxyproline/matrix and percent mineral. The bone mineral present is of high density and x-ray-diffraction crystallinity, suggesting a decrease in the mineralization front high in the amorphous phase and/or small nondiffracting crystalloids. The chemical studies reveal that in the absence of available Ca, Mg and Na are substituted, and CO3 is decreased. The restoration of these plasma and bone abnormalities to normal by a diet high in CaCO3 adds further emphasis to the essential role of Ca in bone cell function.
A patient with classic rheumatoid arthritis developed biopsy-proven diffuse interstitial pulmonary fibrosis and ventilatory insufficiency which appeared to be irreversible. The administration of azathioprine coincided with significant immediate improvement in pulmonary function and clinical status. During five years of continuous azathioprine therapy, progressive improvement in lung function has been accompanied by marked deterioration of the rheumatoid joint disease, suggesting that the pulmonary and joint lesions of rheumatoid disease may not be mediated by the same pathways.
A female patient is described with multiple papillary transitional cell tumours involving left renal pelvis, left ureter, bladder and urethra with metastases to uterine cervix, uterine cavity and left ovary with cyst formation. The surgical management and possible explanations of the pathogenesis are discussed.

A method is described of high voltage electrophoretic separation of iodoamino acids from thin-needle biopsy of the thyroid gland and from resected tissue of thyroid neoplasms. Different patterns of iodoamino acids in malignant and non-malignant diseases of the thyroid gland were found.

Karyotypic study of a population sample of twenty-one owl monkeys, Aotus, originating from Bolivia, revealed two sex-specific somatic diploid chromosome numbers: 49 for males and 50 for females. The presence of a trivalent in male meiotic figures and the identification of chromosomes by band pattern analysis confirmed the interpretation of a Y-autosome translocation in the males.
