A number of examples demonstrating that different cell and organ functions are being performed by a limited set of identical or similar functional blocks has been analysed. The latters are molecular or supramolecular structures fulfilling elementary functions. Functional evolution, functional and structural specializations, divergence, convergence and other processes have been considered as associated largely with the relationship, recombination and transposition of such elementary functional blocks, presumably, originated at the early stages of evolution.

The influence of anoxia on the hydrolysis and transport of certain dipeptides by the rat small intestine in vitro was investigated. It was shown that in most cases, during anoxia there is virtually complete inhibition of active transport, whereas the hydrolysis of dipeptides, both by the intact intestine and by homogenates of the mucosa, is unchanged. These data suggest an important role of membrane hydrolysis at the concluding stages of peptide digestion in the small intestine. The interrelationship of the two types of peptide hydrolysis: membrane and intracellular, is discussed on the basis of the data obtained.

Under conditions of chronic experiment the circadian cycle of glucose transport was determined. An isolated proximal area of the small intestine was perfused by glucose, fructose, medical bile and Ringer's solutions in various intervals of the 24 hour period. The circadian cycle of glucose absorption is disturbed in the fasting rats. Various substrates differently alter their amplitude and acro-phase of absorption. Ringer's solution perfusion shifts the acro-phase absorption to evening time, while that of fructose occurs during day time and that of bile takes place at night. The circadian cycle of the fed rats is less subject to shifts. Fasting is a powerful exogenous factor causing structural changes in the small intestine and altering the circadian cycle of glucose absorption.
