Assay of choline in pharmaceutical preparations was realized by capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) coupled with indirect UV detection. The suitability of several background electrolytes was investigated to optimize the separation of choline from other components such as amino acids, betaine and cations. Final operating conditions were as follows: a 75 microns x 50 cm uncoated fused-silica capillary with an electrolyte consisting of 5 mM creatinine pH 3.2, a voltage of 25 kV, a temperature of 25 degrees C and an UV detection at 210 nm. Choline migrates in less than 5 min and full selectivity vs other analytes was achieved. Validation data compared with those obtained with HPLC demonstrated the interest of CZE.
BACKGROUND: We recently carried out a study concerning consultations by French dermatologists in private practice. We evaluated consultations at the dermatology departments of 3 university teaching hospitals in France. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a 2-month prospective study conducted in 2003 at the dermatology departments of the university teaching hospitals of Amiens, Lille and Rouen. Each consultant completed a questionnaire covering the duration of the study. The following data were recorded: consultation date, function of the consultant, study centre, type of consultation, type of disease, and whether or not the patient was hospitalised after the consultation. RESULTS: 7296 files were examined during the study. 38% of the consultations were performed by part-time hospital consultants, 29% by dermatology interns, 18% by hospital practitioners, 9% by university professors and 6% by clinical heads or assistant heads. The most commonly encountered diseases were allergies (17%), cancer (16%), arteriovenous disease (15%) and infectious disease (11%). Three types of consultation were identified: emergency consultations without an appointment, consultations by appointment for a specific problem and consultations by appointment without a specific problem. The number of resulting hospital admissions ranged from 2 to 10% of consultations, depending on the type of consultation and the role of the consultant in question. DISCUSSION: This study shows that in France, consultations at hospital dermatology departments differ greatly from those of dermatologists in private practice. The main diseases seen (cancer, arteriovenous disease, allergy, infectious dermatosis) accounted for the majority of hospitalisations in these departments. The organisation of hospital consultations is increasingly tending both towards treatment of highly specialised diseases through specifically oriented consultations and also towards the emergency treatment of certain forms of acute dermatosis.
Since 1995, the Canadian Association of Nurses in AIDS Care (CANAC), the Canadian Nurses Association, the Victorian Order of Nurses of Canada, and the Ordre des Infirmières et Infirmiers du Québec have collaborated on several HIV/AIDS initiatives supported by the AIDS Care, Treatment, and Support Program, Health Canada (the national health organization). CANAC is the lead and sponsoring association in this collaboration. Phases I and II of the collaboration (December 1996 to March 1999) identified, promoted, and evaluated 17 nursing projects in HIV/AIDS care across Canada. This article describes the goals and outcomes of two of the collaboration's main projects: the identification of HIV/AIDS nursing research priorities and the mentorship program in HIV/AIDS care for Francophone nurses practicing in the province of Québec.
We reviewed 30 cases of 360 degrees retinectomy in advanced anterior PVR or PDR with anterior traction. The preoperative visual acuity was light perception or hand motions. In all cases, a 360 degrees retinectomy with silicone oil tamponade was performed. After a mean follow-up of 10 months, the retina was attached in 83% and the visual acuity had improved in 47% of the patients. The mean visual field in patients with a visual acuity of more than counting fingers extended to 29 degrees nasally and 38 degrees temporally. Hypotony was seen in 6 patients, of whom two developed keratopathy. In conclusion, eyes with severe PDR or PVR and a preoperative low visual acuity can be treated successfully with 360 degrees retinectomy when conventional methods have failed. The patients can regain an ambulatory visual acuity and a visual field.

The close observation of the gill habitat of two Monogeneans Diplectanum aequans (Wagener 1857) Diesing 1858 and Diplectanum laubieri Lambert and Maillard 1974 shows the microbiotopes of these two simultaneous parasites of the Sea-bass: Dicentrarchus labrax. The authors propose to study the distribution of the Monogeneans with references to three theoretic axes in the gill chambers. For the Diplectanum, the populations spread on each of these axes according to preferential gradients.
The distribution of ciliated cells and the oncomiracidium chaetotaxy in Ancyrocephalus paradoxus Creplin, 1839 (Ancyrocephalidae) parasite of Sander lucioperca (Teleostean, Percidae) are described for the first time as well as the larval ciliated cells in Dactylogyrus extensus (Dactylogyridae) parasite of Cyprinus carpio. Also is given a description of the larval haptorial armature of Ancyrocephalus paradoxus which shows some original features in our region. The ciliated cell pattern and chaetotaxy are compared among Ancyrocephalus paradoxus (Ancyrocephalidae) Ergenstrema mugilis (Ancyrocephalidae) Dactylogyrus extensus (Dactylogyridae) Tetraonchus menenteron (Tetraonchidae) and Euzetrema knopffleri the systematic position of which is still to be defined. As a result it appears that an unitary pattern occurs in the ciliated cell arrangement and chaetotaxy in the larvae of Ancyrocephalus paradoxus, Ergenstrema mugilis and Dactylogyrus extensus. Yet they are easy to distinguish. Tetraonchus monenteron reveals some affinities with these Dactylogyroïdea but further investigations have to be undertaken again while Euzetrema knoepffleri proves to be very different. In the armature of the larval haptor of Ancyrocephalus paradoxus intraspecific variations appear which seem to be of a biogeographic order. Also the same variations are reported in the larvae of Diplectanum aequans.

Human involucrin (hINV) is assembled into cornified structures via formation of transglutaminase (TG)-dependent interprotein epsilon-(gamma-glutamyl)lysine bonds. The hINV sequence includes 150 glutamine residues that could function as potential sites of cross-link formation. The present studies were designed to evaluate the extent to which hINV can function as a TG substrate under optimal conditions and in the absence of other substrates. Incubation of hINV with TG results in formation of 4-5 isopeptide bonds per hINV molecule. When the small amine donor (14)C-putrescine is included in the reaction, 48 Q residues are labled. Isotope distribution and sequence analysis suggests that the (14)C-putrescine-labeled sites are located throughout the protein. Our present results show that many hINV Q residues can be utilized for cross-link formation, and that hINV can be cross-linked at very high cross-link densities. These results suggest that, in vivo, factors other than hINV structure limit the number of residues used for cross-link formation.
UNLABELLED: The improvement of the wound healing process in humans by vitamin supplements is still controversial because of the lack of a clearly demonstrated correlation with the mechanical properties of scars. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work was to study the effects of high doses of ascorbic acid (AA) and pantothenic acid (PA) on the wound healing process of human skin. METHOD: Two groups of patients undergoing surgery for tattoo removal by the successive resection procedure received AA (1 or 3 g/day) and PA (0.2 or 0.9 g/day). More than 80 mechanical, biological and histological parameters were investigated in both preoperated skin and the scars. RESULTS: The breaking energy of scars was higher in group 2, and energy and treatment were directly correlated (p = 0.006). Mg and Mn significantly rose in group 2 whereas Fe decreased in a dose-dependent manner. Intragroup comparison showed patient and treatment effects for Mg, a time.treatment effect for Cu and a treatment effect for Fe. CONCLUSION: The degree and rapidity of variations rather than the variations of the absolute values themselves of fibroblasts, hydroxyproline, Fe, Cu and Mg are significantly related to the enhancement of the mechanical properties of scars. From this study, it may be assumed that in order to obtain 'better', more solid and resistant scars, the decrease of Fe must be quick and acute in order to avoid the harmful effects of toxic radicals; the increase of Cu, Mg and Mn must be early and high in order to have more stable and solid collagen.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the prognostic significance of atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS) using an in situ hybridization (ISH) method for destined cervical cytologic smears and a cocktail of biotinylated DNA probes for human papillomavirus (HPV) 6, 11, 16, 18, 31 and 33. STUDY DESIGN: Two HPV DNA probe mixtures were applied to the same smear for the simultaneous detection of high-risk HPV types 16, 18, 31 and 33 and low-risk HPV 6 and 11. ISH was carried out on 192 smears. Among them, 59 showed koilocytosis, 91 ASCUS and 42 normal features. RESULTS: Low-risk HPV types were rarely found and associated mainly with koilocytosis (17%). High rates of potentially oncogenic HPV were detected in ASCUS (41%) and condyloma (73%). In addition, similar levels of positivity were found to be associated with ASCUS when using two probe mixtures specific to high-risk HPV: one included HPV genotypes 16 and 18 and the other, genotypes 31 and 33. CONCLUSION: HPV DNA typing by ISH on cervical cytologic smears might improve the identification of women at high risk of developing precancerous and cancerous cervical lesions.

The sensillae of the swimming larvae of the Mongeneans of the Polystoma genus can be classified into groups and transversal cycles. The study of three european species shows that the two generations of larvae, one of them coming from the adult, the other one from the neotenic, have the same chetotaxy, that there are very few individual differences from one larva to the next, and that closely related species can sometimes be distinguished by minor variations within a fundamental pattern.
Differentials in mortality in developed countries are examined according to region, sex, age, cause of death, and social class. "Various simulations [using the Odyssey model developed at the Catholic University of Louvain] are presented in order to study the impact of decreasing mortality and mortality differentials on the structure of deaths by cause, and on various economic variables.... The consequences [for] the social security system, among others, are stressed." (summary in FRE, ITA)
