Influence of carbohydrate-free protein-rich diet on free alpha-amino nitrogen changes in plasma, erythrocytes and leucocytes.

On feeding carbohydrate-free, protein-rich diet, plasma, erythrocytes, leucocytes and hepatic free alpha-amino nitrogen levels were increased within 2 days in rats but were later nearly normalized within 8 days. It may be suggested that the given diet results in a temporary rise of the amino acid pool in the body but high dietary protein, in the absence of carbohydrate may further be utilized by the body for the purposes of energy.

Hematological responses to hydroxyurea therapy in multitransfused thalassemic children.

Fifteen multi-transfused thalassemic children between 3-6 years of age (seven boys and eight girls) were administered hydroxyurea for 5 days and three such cycles were repeated at 15 days interval. Rise in hemoglobin levels was observed in 13, 8 and 7 cases, while rise in mean hemoglobin F was seen in 8, 11 and 10 cases following 1st, 2nd and 3rd course of hydroxyurea therapy respectively. Rise in hemoglobin level was associated with transient rise in fetal hemoglobin level. Though the changes in mean hemoglobin levels and hemoglobin F levels were statistically insignificant, a definite trend of rise in hemoglobin and hemoglobin F was observed.

Wilms tumor associated with polycythemia: case report and review of the literature.

PURPOSE AND METHODS: A case of polycythemia with a normal serum erythropoietin is described, which led to the diagnosis of Wilms tumor. The clinical features of the reported cases of Wilms tumor associated with polycythemia are reviewed. RESULTS: An asymptomatic 6-year-old boy with polycythemia, a normal serum erythropoietin, and no evidence of erythroid colony forming activity in his serum was found to have a Wilms tumor. After resection and chemotherapy, he has had no recurrence of either the polycythemia or the Wilms tumor. There have now been 10 cases of Wilms tumor reported: 7 patients were more than 16 years of age, 8 were boys, and 9 were clinical stage I with a favorable histology. CONCLUSIONS: Polycythemia is a rare manifestation of Wilms tumor that can occur in the absence of an elevated serum erythropoietin and has an association with male gender, older patient age, and low clinical stage. Children with unexplained polycythemia should be investigated for Wilms tumor, even if the serum erythropoietin level is normal.

Geographic subdivision of the range of the malaria parasite Plasmodium vivax.

We examined geographically distinct isolates of Plasmodium vivax and categorized them according to developmental success in Anopheles albimanus. We found that parasites from Central America and Colombia form a group distinct from those of Asia. New World isolates have a distinct chromosomal translocation and an episomal variation in the open reading frame (ORF) 470 DNA sequence that distinguishes them from the other isolates tested. Old World types of P. vivax were introduced into the Americas, and a remnant of this lineage remains in P. simium. It is indistinguishable from Old World P. vivax to the extent determinable by using our encoded markers and the examination of its developmental pattern in mosquitoes. The cohesive characteristics that separate types of P. vivax are predictors of range and potential for transmission and hence require taxonomic distinction.

Congenital true pancreatic cyst: presentation and management.

Congenital true pancreatic cyst is a very rare cause of a cystic lesion of the pancreas comprising less than 1% of all pancreatic cysts. Most of these are reported in children less than 2 years of age. Described here is a case of congenital true pancreatic cyst in a 6 years old girl with the clinical, radiological and pathological details and the surgical treatment.

Evaluation of the BAX system for detection of Listeria monocytogenes in foods: collaborative study.

A multilaboratory study was conducted to compare the automated BAX system and the standard cultural methods for detection of Listeria monocytogenes in foods. Six food types (frankfurters, soft cheese, smoked salmon, raw, ground beef, fresh radishes, and frozen peas) were analyzed by each method. For each food type, 3 inoculation levels were tested: high (average of 2 CFU/g), low (average of 0.2 CFU/g) and uninoculated controls. A total of 25 laboratories representing government and industry participated. Of the 2335 samples analyzed, 1109 were positive by the BAX system and 1115 were positive by the standard method. A Chi square analysis of each of the 6 food types, at the 3 inoculation levels tested, was performed. For all foods, except radishes, the BAX system performed as well as or better than the standard reference methods based on the Chi square results.

Hemobilia as presenting manifestation of polyarteritis nodosa.

Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) is a multisystem necrotizing inflammatory vasculitis of medium-sized muscular arteries. Hepatobiliary complications secondary to thrombosis or aneurysm formation in PAN are rare and are associated with poor outcome. We describe an 18-year-old man with PAN who presented with hemobilia secondary to rupture of a hepatic artery aneurysm, which was successfully managed with coil embolization followed by immunosuppressive therapy.
