Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome variant.

We describe a patient with soft-tissue and bony hypertrophy of all four limbs. The upper limbs were erythematous, with associated finger deformity. The soft-tissue irregular hypertrophy and engorgement subsided when the limbs were elevated. Retinal examination showed large, dilated, tortuous veins, with no dye leakage on fluorescein angiography. We feel that this case represents an unusual variant of the Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome.

Entamoeba histolytica and other parasitic infections in south Kanara district, Karnataka.

Single stool specimens collected from 1,020 apparently healthy people of the South Kanara District, were processed for intestinal parasites using three parasitological methods viz. (a) Direct smear in physiological saline and D'Antoni's iodine, (b) Zinc sulfate concentration method and (c) by culture in modified Boek and Drbolhav medium. Of these 781 (76.51 per cent) were found to be infected with parasites. The prevalence of various intestinal parasites was: Ascaris lumbricoides (48.33 per cent), Necator americanus (46.86 per cent), Trichuris trichiura (42.75 per cent), Entamoeba coli (23.24 per cent), Entamoeba histolytica (7.94 per cent), Enterobius vermicularis (2.84 per cent), Giardia intestinalis (2.45 per cent), Iodamoeba buitschlii (1.57 per cent), Entamoeba hartmanni (1.37 per cent), Trichomonas hominis (0.88 per cent), Strongyloides stercoralis (0.68 per cent), Hymenolepis nana (0.49 per cent), Chilomastis mesnili (0.10 per cent) and Endolimax nana (0.10 per cent). High incidence of parasitic infections was recorded in females and age group of 6-14 years.

Total haemolytic complement profile in chicks following fowl pox vaccination or infection.

Total haemolytic complement levels were assessed in normal, fowl pox-vaccinated or infected chicks using radial immune haemolysis up to 28 days post-treatment. Significantly lower values of total haemolytic complement were recorded 7-21 days post-vaccination or 21 days post-infection as compared to controls (p less than 0.05). The differences between intervals, the influence of the period of treatment were also significant, but the vaccinated chicks did not differ significantly from the infected ones (p less than 0.05). It is concluded that lower circulating levels of total haemolytic complement may be due to deposition of complement at the sites of virus replication.

Cord blood lipid levels in low birth weight newborns.

Cord blood cholesterol, triglyceride and FFA levels were estimated in 73 newborns, subdivided into various gestation weight categories (FTAGA, PTAGA, FTSGA and PTSGA). Cholesterol levels were not influenced by birth weight and gestation. Prematurity and growth retardation caused a significant elevation in triglyceride values. FFA levels were not influenced by prematurity, but growth retardation produced a significant increase. Birth weight and gestational age should be taken into consideration before labelling the newborn as hyperlipidemic.

Prevalence of antibodies to aspergilli in bronchial asthmatics.

Sputum and bleed samples were analysed from 330 cases of bronchial asthmatics and 50 normal persons without features of bronchial asthma. The prevalence of aspergilli and antibodies to different Aspergillus species were detected using cultural methods and serological technique like agar gel double diffusion (DD), counter-immuno-electrophoresis (CIEP) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Out of total 6.06% yielded Aspergillus species in sputum specimens repeatedly. Precipitins against Aspergillus species were detected in 7.88% of cases by DD and CIEP. ELISA test showed 20% of cases to be having antibodies to A. fumigatus. Allergic broncho-pulmonary aspergillosis can be detected in the early course of the disease in bronchial asthmatics using highly sensitive technique like ELISA.

Intra-uterine growth curves for midarm and thigh circumferences.

Use of birth weight as a measure of intrauterine growth is hampered by several logistic problems. Both mid-arm (MAC) and thigh circumferences (TC) have been proved to be efficient alternative measurements. In this study MAC and TC were recorded on 2925 consecutive live births to derive intrauterine growth curves and provide normative data for an indigenous population.

Purification and properties of goat liver catalase: two pH optima.

Goat liver catalase (EC 1.11.1.6) has been purified to homogeneity using the techniques of ammonium sulfate fractionation, DEAE-cellulose chromatography and gel-filtration through Ultrogel AcA-34 involving two alternating steps of column chromatography. The homogeneity of the purified enzyme was tested by native and sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, immunodiffusion and immunoelectrophoresis. The enzyme is a tetramer having a subunit molecular weight of 58,000 +/- 3000, contains six sulfhydryl groups per mole of the enzyme and shows pH optima at pH 6.8 and 7.7. The kinetic data show no cooperativity between the substrate binding sites. Tryptophan, indoleacetic acid, cysteine, formaldehyde and sodium azide inhibit the enzyme non-competitively with Ki values of 4 +/- 1, 2.5 +/- 0.8, 6 +/- 1.5, 0.48 +/- 0.15 and 0.0013 +/- 0.0003 mM, respectively. Sulfhydryl group binding agents as well as thiol reagents inhibit the enzyme activity.

Ponderal index as a marker of intrauterine growth.

Anthropometric data obtained from 2925 consecutive live births were used to compute Rohrer's ponderal index (PI). Norms and curves for intrauterine growth in terms of PI were worked out for the first time in our country and were found to be comparable with figures from Western studies. PI was unaffected by sex and showed a linear correlation with gestational age up to 40 wk. PI was also found to be an efficient marker of disproportionate intrauterine growth.
