[Dipyridamole as an inhibitor of vaccinia virus replication].

Dipyridamole in concentration of 25 microM inhibited the multiplication of vaccinia virus in about 90% of cells. In the presence of this substance, [3H]-uptake was sharply reduced both in uninfected and infected RK13 cells, while [14C]-uptake was not inhibited incorporation of [3H]-thymidine and [14C]-amino acids into viral particles. The present findings suggest that the antiviral character of dipyridamole is related with the inhibition of the substrate transport through the cell membrane.

Immunoglobulins and complement in migraine.

In 54 patients with migraine and 70 persons comprising the control group, the total complement level (CH50) was evaluated together with its C3 and C4 fraction level and the level of IgG, IgA and IgM immunoglobulins. It was found that the average C3 fraction level was significantly decreased, while the C4 fraction level and total complement activity remained in the normal range. The immunoglobulin level did not show any statistically significant alterations except for the IgA level, which was lowered in migraine patients. On this basis, i.e. lowering of the C3 fraction level with normal C4 fraction level and total complement activity and lack of elevation of IgA, it is felt that the alternative pathway of complement system may be activated in migraine.

Gastrin levels in patients with migraine and cluster headache.

Idiopathic headaches (migraine, cluster headache) are very often accompanied by alimentary canal disturbances. In view of a suspected relation of gastrin to these symptoms the author decided to test its level in connection with these diseases. It was found that the level of gastrin in 23 women with migraine and 23 men with cluster headache was significantly lower in comparison with the control group of 26 healthy volunteers. The author discusses the possible reasons for such results obtained in patients with idiopathic headaches.

[Use of propranolol in the treatment of migraine].

The efficacy of propranolol used for prophylactic treatment of 122 patients with migraine is evaluated. Of the 122 patients 51 were suffering from simple or ophthalmic migraine, 43 from vasomotor cephalgia, and 28 from cervical migraine. On the basis of the data obtained the authors come to a conclusion that propranolol is an effective remedy for prevention of migraine and other headaches. According to the authors' data the optimal daily dose of the drug is 120 ml, and the treatment is to be given for not less than 12 weeks. The drug is well tolerated, and the side effects are negligible.

Lithium therapy in cluster headache.

The authors used lithium carbonate in the treatment of 15 patients with cluster headache (chronic and episodice form). Disappearance of attacks was achieved in 5 patients (1 chronic and 4 episodic), significant improvement in 5 (4 chronic and 1 episodic) and in 4 cases (2 chronic and 2 episodic) treatment was ineffective.
