While psychogenic aspects in ulcerative colitis have been comprehensively studied, much less attention has been given to sequence and interaction of psychic and somatic factors in psychopathological description. Onset of schizoaffective and cyclothymic symptomatology in 20 ulcerative colitis patients proved to occur only after somatic manifestation. As later on organic and psychic relapse never occurred simultaneously, further discussion should be centered on two points: Does schizoaffective cyclothymic axial syndrome occur separately from ulcerative colitis manifestation? Or is there a common etiological, pathogenic base for both somatic and psychic symptoms?
The differential diagnostic significance of acid phosphatase and beta-glucuronidase were studied in 77 cases of low-grade B cell non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. In most cases the results of cytochemical enzyme studies performed on malignant cells of the bone marrow were evaluated. B cell chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, centrocytic and centroblastic/centrocytic lymphomas were characterized by a weak or a negative acid phosphatase and beta-glucuronidase activity. Stronger positivity was observed in immunocytoma and in Waldenström's macroglobulinaemia, while the highest activity was found in multiple myeloma. Hairy cell leukaemia of B cell origin showed intensive tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase activity. The cytochemical examination of these lysosomal enzymes may be useful in the diagnosis of low-grade malignant lymphomas of B cell origin by completing other methods.
Peripheral leukocytes or lymph node cells and blood plasma samples from patients with lymphoid malignancies were investigated for immunological markers of BaEV, GaLV and HTLV. Antigens and antibodies were shown with radioimmunoassay. Antigen related to the p30 core protein of BaEV could be detected in each cell type of leukaemias and lymphomas. Antigen related to the GaLV p30 was found mainly in B- and O-cell forms, while that related to the p24 protein of HTLV could be detected only in two T-cell malignancies. Antibodies reactive with these antigens showed a similar distribution.
The antiatherosclerotic profile of nicotinic acid and of its new water-insoluble derivative was studied in an 8-day experiment in rats. Both drugs lowered plasma triglyceride levels significantly, while other lipoprotein parameters were unaffected. Circulating immune complex levels were decreased with lysosomal membrane permeability by both drugs. Glunicate proved to be a powerful antioxidant with regard to enzymatic lipid peroxidation when studied in the liver microsomal system. The relevance of these findings to the antiatherosclerotic effect of the drugs and the biological significance of antioxidant treatment is discussed. On the basis of these data glunicate seems to be a promising new therapeutic tool against atherosclerosis and merits further study.
Expression of the methyltransferase gene from Bacillus subtilis lysogenizing phage SP beta B was studied by analyzing the sensitivity of the hybrid plasmid DNAs to restriction by the enzymes BspRI, Hpall and Mspl. The gene produces the methylase M. BsuP beta BI with specificity for 5'-GGCC. The fragment carrying the SP beta B derived gene also directs the synthesis in E. coli of a second methylase activity (M. BsuP beta BII) with 5'-CCGG specificity. Indirect evidence suggests that the two SP beta B modification activities are encoded by the same gene.
In the development of thrombocytopenia in patients with lymphoproliferative disorders immunological factors may play the decisive role. Platelet-associated immunoglobulins were investigated by anti-human IgG and anti-human IgM-coated polyacrylamide beads ("Immunobeads") with light microscopy. Among the 65 patients studied 19 had thrombocytopenia and four of them had an increased number of platelet-immunobead rosettes. In four cases from the group of patients with normal platelet count this phenomenon was also demonstrated. The platelet-associated immunoglobulin was IgG except of one case in which it was IgM. Studying of platelet-associated immunoglobulins might have significance first of all in the choice of the most adequate therapy.

The expression of oncoviral p30 polypeptides and onc gene-specific proteins has been examined in different human lymphoid malignancies. The distribution of antigen(s) related to the p30 of BaEV lacked any specificity. Antigen(s) related to the main core polypeptide of GaLV could be detected mainly in B- and O-cell malignancies. The myc-encoded protein was translated at higher levels in malignant than in normal lymphoid cells. An active src gene was identified in three acute lymphoid leukaemias and in one non-Hodgkin lymphoma of T-cell origin. Human DNAs coding oncoviral antigens or onc gene-specific proteins could be transfected into NIH 3T3 cells. These data suggest that the synergistic effect of the myc and src genes would operate in malignant transformation of some progenitors of T-cell lineage.
The fine structure of neuronal somata of the anterior subdivision of the hypothalamic ventromedial nucleus (VMN) was studied in repeatedly immobilized rats. After the 40th immobilization daily for 150 min a small population of neuronal somata containing endoplasmic reticulum formations classified as lamellar bodies and whorls were identified in the area investigated. These neuronal somata differed from the neighbouring perikarya of VMN also in several other ultrastructural features. They showed an extraordinarily dilated cisternae of the rough endoplasmic reticulum and of the Golgi complexes, moderately swollen mitochondria and a large number of free ribosomes evenly distributed in the cytoplasm.
The nucleotide sequence of the gene coding for the 5'-GGCC and 5'-CCGG specific DNA methyltransferase of the Bacillus subtilis phage SPR was determined by the Maxam-Gilbert procedure. Transcriptional and translational signals of the sequence were assigned with the help of S1 mapping and translation in E. coli minicells. The gene codes for a 49 kd polypeptide. The amino acid sequence of the SPR methylase shows regions of homology with the sequence of the 5'-GGCC-specific BspRI modification methylase.

We report on a 14-year-old boy who, at the age of 6 months, developed groups of pin head-sized protuberances on a bay leaf-shaped area of the skin above and below the left clavicle. These skin eruptions become more prominent in response to heat and cold, but cause no complaints. The histological picture shows longitudinal and cross sections of mm. arrectorum pilorum in large numbers.

Platelet-associated IgG (PAIgG) was detected by means of anti-human IgG coated polyacrylamide beads ("Immunobeads") technique in 32 patients with chronic ITP. Both a direct test (with in vivo sensitized platelets) and an indirect test (with in vitro loaded platelets) were carried out. The percent of rosette forming beads was both in the direct test (41.2%) and in the indirect test (32.6%) significantly higher in the cases of chronic ITP patients than in the controls (2.5% and 3.2%, respectively). These results confirm the diagnostic value of this new, relatively simple and rapid method in routine clinical practice.
The effect of acute and repeated immobilization stress on serotonin concentration and tryptophan hydroxylase activity in some isolated hypothalamic and brain stem nuclei was measured using a special microdissection technique and sensitive isotopic-enzymatic microassays. In acutely immobilized rats serotonin concentration was increased in the median eminence, ventromedial and dorsomedial nuclei. In repeatedly immobilized rats increased serotonin concentration was recorded in the dorsomedial nucleus immediately after seven, and in the median eminence after forty consecutive daily exposures to immobilization. Decreased tryptophan hydroxylase activity was found in the suprachiasmatic nucleus after seven exposures to immobilization stress. Acute and repeated immobilization stress failed to produce any changes of serotonin concentration in the isolated brain stem nuclei studied, and of tryptophan hydroxylase activity in the dorsal raphe nucleus and n. centralis superior. The increased tryptophan hydroxylase activity observed without any changes in serotonin concentration in the locus coeruleus after the 7th immobilization may suggest an increased synthesis and release rate of serotonin in serotonergic nerve terminals in this area. The changes of serotonin concentration in some hypothalamic nuclei under the first exposure of rats to stress indicate the involvement of serotonin in the activation of the pituitary-adrenocortical system as well as in other neuroendocrine reactions initiated in the hypothalamus during acute stress. On the basis of the results presented, the presumed role of the serotonergic system in the regulation of pituitary-adrenocortical stress response in repeatedly stressed rats has not been established. The reported response of brain tryptophan hydroxylase to the release of endogenous corticosterone could not be confirmed in our experiments.
