Effect of seasonal conditions on oestrus occurrence and postpartum period in Anatolian water buffaloes.

Oestrus and calving records of Anatolian buffaloes were analyzed to investigate influence of climatic conditions on oestrus occurrence and postpartum period. Oestrus records showed a seasonal pattern concentrated between July and September which is the warmest period of the year. Likewise, more than half (52.7%) of the total calvings occurred between May and August. Month of calving significantly influenced the length of calving to first oestrus interval and open period (P < 0.01). The average length of open period was significantly shorter in autumn and summer calvers compared to those calved in spring and winter (P < 0.05) during long days. The humidity rate was negatively correlated with both calving to first oestrus interval and open period (P < 0.05). In conclusion, exposure to high environmental temperatures around 20 degrees C exerted no suppressive influence on ovarian activity in Anatolian buffaloes. Although humidity rate (P < 0.05) and ambient temperature (P < 0.01) was found to be correlated with the duration of postpartum period, day length might be the main factor regulating reproductive biorhythm and postpartum events in Anatolian buffalo cows.

Unsafe abortion in adolescents.

Every year, an estimated 2.0-4.4 million adolescents resort to abortion. In comparison with adults, adolescents are more likely to delay the abortion, resort to unskilled persons to perform it, use dangerous methods and present late when complications arise. Adolescents are also more likely to experience complications. Consequently, adolescents seeking abortion or presenting with complications of abortion should be considered as a medical emergency. Issues requiring special attention in the management of abortion complications in adolescents are identified. Approaches to adolescent abortion should involve all levels of the health care system, as well as the community, and should include not only management of the consequences of unsafe abortion, but also post-abortion contraception and counseling. Prevention of unwanted pregnancy by providing information on sexuality, ensuring that reproductive health services are adolescent-friendly, creating a supportive environment, building young people's social and decision-making skills, and offering counseling in times of crisis are highlighted.

Risk factors for cancellation of stereotactic large core needle biopsy on a prone biopsy table.

Among patients undergoing stereotactic needle biopsy of the breast on a prone biopsy table, a substantial proportion of planned procedures are terminated prematurely. This study was undertaken to identify risk factors for cancellation of these procedures and to derive a clinical rule for predicting cancellation. Risk factors for cancellation were assessed in a group of 476 consecutive patients with non-palpable lesions planned for large core needle biopsy. 64 (13%) of these planned procedures were cancelled. Multivariate regression analysis was applied to identify independent risk factors for cancellation. Validation took place by applying the logistic rule on a validation set, including 5 cancelled and 35 successful biopsy procedures. Mammograms that were difficult to interpret owing to extremely dense breast tissue, axillary location of the non-palpable lesion, body mass index below 20, less than 15 mm distance from the lesion to the chest wall or the presence of more than one non-palpable lesion were identified as independent risk factors. The logistic rule discriminated patients with successful and cancelled biopsy procedures with a receiver operator characteristic (ROC) area of 0.72. In the validation set, the area under the ROC curve was 0.92. The prediction rule, based on mammographic and clinical findings, discriminated patients with successful and cancelled needle biopsy procedures to a certain extent. The risk of cancellation of the stereotacic biopsy procedure is considerable in cases of very dense breast tissue or the presence of multiple risk factors.

Effect of melatonin implantation to sperm donor rams on post-thaw viability and acrosomal integrity of sperm cells in the breeding and non-breeding season.

The influence of melatonin administration to sperm donors on the freezability of ram semen and enzyme leakage through sperm cells during different steps of the cryopreservation process were evaluated in the breeding and non-breeding season. Melatonin implantation to rams in the breeding season improved post-thaw sperm viability and intact acrosome rates without influencing the motility rate (p < 0.05). Likewise, the post-thaw alkaline phosphatase release through sperm cells was significantly lower in the melatonin-treated group in comparison with untreated controls (p < 0.05). In the non-breeding season, melatonin administration enhanced intact acrosome rates (p < 0.05) and reduced aspartate aminotransferase activity (p < 0.05) post-thaw in the offseason ejaculates. Melatonin implantation twice in the breeding and non-breeding season did not produce any further improvement in the post-thaw sperm parameters in the non-breeding season ejaculates. It was concluded that melatonin administration to sperm donors improved freezability of ram semen collected from these rams and reduced enzyme leakage through sperm cells during cryopreservation.

Influence of sugar supplementation of the extender on motility, viability and acrosomal integrity of dog spermatozoa during freezing.

Influence of different sugars supplemented to the extender on the motility, viability and intact acrosome rates of dog spermatozoa during dilution, equilibration and freezing was studied. The ejaculate was divided into 10 aliquots, which were diluted 1:3 with TRIS-citric acid extender containing 240 mMTRIS, 63 mM citric acid, 8% (v/v) glycerol, 20% (v/v) egg yolk and 70 mM sugar, which was either fructose, galactose, glucose, xylose (monosaccharide), lactose, trehalose, maltose, sucrose (disaccharide) or raffinose (trisaccharide). No sugar was added to the extender in the control group. Extended semen samples were cooled to 5 degrees C over 45 min, packaged in 0.25-mL straws, equilibrated for 2 h at 5 degrees C and frozen in liquid nitrogen vapor. Samples were thawed by placing straws into 37 degrees C water for 30 sec. Motility, viable sperm and intact acrosome rates decreased gradually in all groups after equilibration and consecutively freezing (P<0.001). The type of sugar significantly effected motility, viability and acrosomal integrity during equilibration and freezing (P<0.05). Galactose, lactose, trehalose, maltose and sucrose reduced damaged acrosome percentages in equilibrated samples (P<0.05). Sugar supplementation did not enhance motility and viability during equilibration. The disaccharides, except lactose, reduced post-thaw dead sperm and/or damaged acrosome percentages without promoting post-thaw motility (P<0.01), whereas monosaccharides, especially fructose and xylose, improved motility (P<0.05) along with viability and intact acrosome rates (P<0.05). Trehalose, xylose and fructose significantly increased total active sperm rates (motility x live sperm rate x normal acrosome rate) compared to other sugars (P<0.01) and control (P<0.0001) in frozen thawed samples. Therefore, sugar supplementation of the extender influenced post-equilibration and post-thaw sperm quality, and the type or locality of protective impact of the sugar on dog spermatozoa vary according to type of the sugar.

The novel genetic disorder microhydranencephaly maps to chromosome 16p13.3-12.1.

We studied a large consanguineous Anatolian family with children who exhibited hydranencephaly associated with microcephaly. The children were severely affected. This novel genetic disorder is autosomal recessive. We used autozygosity mapping to identify a locus at chromosome 16p13.3-12.1; it has a LOD score of 4.11. The gene locus is within a maximal 11-cM interval between markers D16S497 and D16S672 and within a minimal critical region of 8 cM between markers D16S748 and D16S490.

Properties and stability of butter oil obtained from milk and yoghurt.

The physical and chemical characteristics and thermal stability of butter oil produced from cow's milk by two different methods were studied. Butter oil samples from cow's milk were made (i) directly from milk and (ii) from yoghurt. Samples were autoxidized at 60, 70 and 80 degrees C in the dark and the reaction monitored by peroxide, thiobarbituric acid and free fatty acid values. Peroxide and thiobarbituric acid values increased as the temperature increased. The increase of the acid value was not significant. The thermal stability was highest in butter oil produced from yoghurt. Oxidative changes compared to hydrolytic changes are of greater significance in the thermal stability of butter oil samples. Arrhenius parameters and activation energies were calculated for the peroxide value data. The percent loss of linolenic acid was about 3 times faster than that of linoleic acid.

Lead, copper and zinc biosorption from biocomponent systems modelled by empirical Freundlich isotherm.

The biosorption of lead, copper and zinc ions on Rhizopus arrhizus has been studied for three single-component and two binary systems. The equilibrium data have been analysed using the Freundlich adsorption model. The characteristic parameters for the Freundlich adsorption model have been determined and the competition coefficients for the competitive biosorption of Pb(II)-Cu(II) at pH 4.0 and 5.0, and Pb(II)-Zn(II) at pH 5.0 have been calculated. For the individual single-component isotherms, lead has the highest biosorption capacity followed by copper, then zinc. The capacity of lead in the two binary systems is always significantly greater than those of the other metal ions, in agreement with the single-component data. Only a partial selectivity for copper ions has been obtained at pH 4.0.

[Results of radiotherapy in brain metastasis].

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of radiation therapy in the treatment of brain metastases. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifty-eight patients with brain metastases were irradiated. In 52 patients the post-therapeutic survival time could be evaluated. Most frequent basic tumor entity was lung cancer, followed by breast cancer. Eighteen patients underwent neurosurgery prior to radiation therapy, 23 patients underwent only radiotherapy and in 13 patients an additional chemotherapy was performed. Four patients were treated by all these means. Radiation therapy was done as a whole brain irradiation with a total dose of 40 Gy at single doses of two Gy or 30 Gy at single doses of 3 Gy respectively. RESULTS: There were no radiogenic complications. 42 of 58 patients (72%) showed an improved neurological status. In ten patients radiation therapy had to be abandoned due to deterioration of the patients condition, five patients died in the hospital. Mean survival time for all the patients were 213 days, by subtracting the preterminally treated patients the time improved up to 269 days. The prognosis was dependant of several factors. Main importance had the basic tumor entity itself leading to a mean survival time in breast cancer patients of 347 days in contrary to those with lung cancer and 152 days mean survival time. Good general status, young age and solitary metastasis were positive predictive factors. CONCLUSIONS: Radiation therapy is capable to improve quality of life and to prolong survival after an only short treatment period. Treatment should be initiated quickly and consequently after diagnosis.

Echocardiographic evaluation of left ventricular diastolic function in chronic cor pulmonale.

In this study we hoped to understand the abnormalities of left ventricular filling dynamics in chronic cor pulmonale. Our findings showed a severe left ventricular diastolic impairment, directly related to a progressive increase in pulmonary hypertension itself, as expressed by correlation analysis between systolic pulmonary artery pressure and the following parameters: transmitral flow velocity in early/late diastole ratio (r = -0.69, p <0.001), isovolumic relaxation time (r = 0.54, p = 0.001), and transmitral flow velocity in early diastole (r = -0.59, p <0.01).

Radiological findings of intraparenchymal liver Ascaris (hepatobiliary ascariasis).

Ascariasis is a well-known cause of acute cholangitis and cholecystitis; however, very rarely do worms penetrate and colonize the liver parenchyma. Here we present the unique radiological demonstration (US, CT and ERCP) of hepatobiliary ascariasis in which worm was first alive in the parenchyma of the liver and subsequently died and formed liver abscess.

Interobserver and intraobserver variations in sonographic measurement of thyroid volume in children.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the interobserver and intraobserver variations in sonographic measurement of thyroid volume in children. DESIGN: Thyroid volumes of 30 healthy children were measured by three separate observers. Additionally each observer measured thyroid volumes of ten separate children three times. METHODS: The data were used to assess intraobserver and interobserver variations in measurement of thyroid volume. Interobserver and intraobserver variations in measuring each diameter of the thyroid gland were also determined. The effect of thyroid size on interobserver and intraobserver variations was analyzed. RESULTS: Intraobserver variation in measurement of thyroid volume was 8.4+/-6.7% (mean+/-s. d.). Interobserver variation was 13.3+/-8.2%. The widest interobserver variation was encountered in determining the craniocaudal diameter of the thyroid gland. No correlation was found between thyroid volume and interobserver variation (r=-0.12, P=0.27), whereas a slight but statistically significant correlation was found between thyroid volume and intraobserver variation (r=-0.26, P=0.012). CONCLUSION: Significant interobserver and intraobserver variation occurs in sonographic measurement of thyroid volume in children.

An extraperitoneal burch procedure: a case report.

A new laparoscopic Burch procedure with preperitoneal balloon dissection is introduced. A stress incontinence case without cystocele was operated by laparoscopic extraperitoneal colposuspension. The procedure was found to be effective a year after and no complications were seen. The extraperitoneal Burch procedure has the advantages of easy dissection, less bleeding, pain, and adhesion formation, a lower chance of injury to intraperitoneal organs, and short hospital stay and operation time; but the procedure has the disadvantages of a new anatomy orientation and the additional cost of a disposable balloon dissection set.

Rectal diverticulum in an infant.

The occurrence of rectal diverticula are rare. They are invariably accompanied by colonic diverticulosis, especially the sigmoid segment. To our knowledge, this condition has not been previously detected during childhood, and the youngest patient reported was 18 years old. In this report we present a solitary rectal diverticulum in a 25-day-old infant without accompanying colonic diverticula. The existence of rectal diverticulum in this infant convincingly suggests a congenital etiology.
