Bullous keratopathy after anterior-posterior radial keratotomy for myopia for myopic astigmatism.

Of 281 eyes that had had Sato's anterior-posterior radial keratotomy for myopia or myopic astigmatism, 80 (50 patients) underwent follow-up examinations ten to 20 years later. Sixty of the 80 eyes had bullous keratopathy. The onset of this disease occurred when the patient was about 40 years old, regardless of the patient's age at the time of surgery. Seven corneal buttons were obtained from patients with bullous keratopathy who required penetrating keratoplasty. Light and electron microscopy disclosed subepithelial bullae, degenerate or absent Bowman's zone, and thickened Descemet's membrane. Flattened fibroblastic endothelial cells were observed in three of the seven cases. This type of radial keratotomy surgery seems to produce severe corneal decompensation many years later, possibly as a result of damage from the corneal incisions in combination with endothelial losses from aging.

Electron microscopic studies of primary band-shaped keratopathy and gelatinous, drop-like corneal dystrophy in two brothers.

We present here a case of bilateral primary band-shaped keratopathy that changed into a gelatinous, drop-like dystrophy over two years. To our knowledge, this is the first such case reported in the literature. In the first examination of the right eye, histologic evidence revealed no amyloid deposits and the presence of disorganized collagen lamellae with a high-density amorphous substance. The left corneal disc, obtained two years after the first and second examinations, revealed an agglomeration of amyloid fibrils in the subepithelial portion.

The retrocorneal ridge in syphilitic and herpetic interstitial keratitis: an electron-microscopic study.

The retrocorneal linear ridges in corneas from one case of syphilitic and two cases of herpetic interstitial keratitis were examined by electron microscopy. The hyaline ridge in syphilitic keratitis showed duplicated Descemet's membrane with focal excrescences of basement membrane-like substances. The hyaline ridge in herpetic keratitis showed a triangular area of increased fibrous tissues in the deeper stroma adjacent to Descemet's membrane with no focal excrescences of Descemet's membrane.

[Clinical experience with cefotiam (author's transl)].

Cefotiam (CTM) were clinically applied to 6 cases and the following results were obtained: 1. The patients were aged 1 year in 5 cases and 7 years in 1 case. They comprised three cases of acute tonsillitis and 1 case each of phlegmon, bronchopneumonia and cervical abscess. CTM was administered in a daily dose of 50-115 mg/kg t.i.d. by an 1-hour intravenous drip infusion for 4 to 8 days. 2. The causative bacteria were S. aureus in 3 cases and H. parainfluenzae, K. pneumoniae and unknown pathogen in each 1 case. The organisms were eradicated in all cases except for only 1 case of S. aureus. 3. Overall responses were good in 4 cases and fair in 2 cases. 4. As for the abnormal laboratory findings, slight increase of GOT and GPT was observed in 1 case. Any other side effects were not observed.
