Genetic tags applied to the European hake, Merluccius merluccius (L.).

Three biochemical gene markers test the hypothesis that the European hake, Merluccius merluccius (L.), along the west European continental shelf are one race. The three polymorphic loci were serum transferrin (Tf), eye vitreous fluid butyric esterase (Es) and liver superoxide dismutase (Sod). Five transferrin alleles, three esterase alleles and two superoxide dismutase alleles were identified. Heterogeneity tests on genotype frequency distribution for twelve areas ranging from Norway to Biscay revealed no significant variation. The results using these genetic tags are consistent with the unit race hypothesis for hake throughout the sea areas sampled.

Effect of clotrimazole on Naegleria fowleri.

The sensitivity of 18 strains of Naegleria fowleri to clotrimazole (Bay b5097) was tested. They showed minimal inhibitory concentrations in the range 0-03-0-125 mug/ml, and minimal amoebicidal concentrations in the range 0-125-0-25 mug/ml. Mice inoculated with N. fowleri were not protected from infection by doses of 100 mg clotrimazole/kg per day given for five days after inoculation. Mice had serum levels of up to 6 mug/ml in the first 32 hours after inoculation. Therefore clotrimazole appears to be ineffective in protecting against infection with N. fowleri.

Water-borne typhoid fever caused by an unusual Vi-phage type in Edinburgh.

Investigation of a small series of cases of typhoid fever infected in a river between 1963 and 1970 revealed that all were caused by a single source, a carrier of a rare phage type of Salmonella typhi. The contamination of the river resulted from an incorrect sewage connexion with a surface water drain outfall into the river.
