Gradation of microcapsule wall porosity by deposition of polymer mixtures (Eudragit RL and Eudragit RS). Phase separation of polymer mixtures and effects of external media and conditions on release.

With the aim of increasing flexibility in controlling release from microcapsules, mixtures of wall polymers varying in porosity were investigated by phase separation. Eudragit RL and RS (polymethylmethacrylate linear backbone polymers) mixtures differing in polar substituent content and porosity were used as the wall material and were deposited using a non-solvent addition method. Release rates increased with polar group content of the mixtures, using theophylline, potassium dichromate or sodium chloride as model core materials. Theophylline release rate had the same relationship to polar group content as found earlier for urea permeation of cast mixed-polymer films. Release was generally accelerated in these systems when the external medium contained sodium lauryl sulphate as a wetting agent but not consistently, decreasing unexpectedly for RL-theophylline microcapsules. Localized dissolution of core substance was visible microscopically during release from single microcapsules. The release rate was sensitive to agitation intensity only at low wall to core ratios. Temperature change revealed only a single release mechanism for sodium chloride by Arrhenius equation treatment. Buffer ions penetrated coatings readily, changing theophylline release rates and providing clear evidence of diffusion via a pore-capillary mechanism.

Know how vitamins and minerals.

Lifestyle and environmental factors have an influence on nutritional status. In order to enhance uptake and utilisation of both macro and micronutrients, it is important to have a balanced diet in line with the Balance of Good Health guidelines which focus on eating foods in variable amounts from each food group (see Know How guide, Part 6). The British Dietetic Association (1999) argues that a balanced diet will meet the needs of most people, but advises that those who wish to take a vitamin and/or mineral supplement should choose one that is in line with the UK Dietary Reference Values, so as to avoid the risk of overdosing. Other activities that will contribute to a healthy lifestyle are: Regular physical activity, preferably one which is enjoyed A limited amount of stress Drinking only moderate quantities of alcohol.

Clip repair of peripheral side-to-side arteriovenous fistulas. Evaluation of a method in dogs and preliminary results in humans.

A simple technique for repair of peripheral arteriovenous fistula by clip application is presented. This procedure is rapid and effective, it minimizes the extent of dissection, and it eliminates the need for application of vascular clamps on the vessels and for anticoagulation. The safety of the procedure was confirmed in dog experiments and clinically applied successfully in four patients. It is suitable for simple, uncomplicated side-to-side fistulas amenable to this procedure.

[Central nervous system trauma in children. Clinical analysis of 782 cases].

A series of consecutive 782 children with severe head trauma and spinal cord injury who were managed surgically or conservatively in the Department of Neurosurgery, Medical Academy in Poznań during 31 years was analysed. The clinical history, severity of injury (scales AIS, ISS), outcome of head and spinal cord injuries are reviewed. Factors important in predicting a poor outcome included the presence of brainstem contusion, intracranial haematomas and complete and severe partial spinal cord lesions.
