[Effect of mexiletine on glucose and oxygen uptake in rat brain, liver and myocardial tissue in vitro (author's transl)].

The effect of mexiletine on oxygen and glucose consumption was studied both in homogenate and slices of brain, liver and myocardium of Wistar rats. Oxygen consumption was detected by means of Warburg's manometric techniques, and glucose utilization by the enzymatic method of glucose oxidase. Whilst glucose uptake was not modified in any of the studied preparations, mexiletine promoted a significant increase of oxygen consumption in the homogenized slices, and an inhibition in the intact tissue.

Gastroscopic cytology in intestinal metaplasia.

Based on the findings of goblet cells the authors established cytologic criteria for the diagnosis of intestinal metaplasia. With this technique they made the diagnosis of intestinal metaplasia in 79.4% of the cases surgically confirmed, this contrast to endoscopic biopsy with only 35.2%. on the other hand, the cytologic diagnosis of malignancy is obtained in the same series in 92% of 25 gastric cancers against 80% of endoscopic biopsy. Among the controls surgically verified there was no cytologic false positive neither for malignancy nor for the diagnosis of intestinal metaplasia. The authors believe that any case with signs of malignancy and intestinal metaplasia may have a better preoperative prognosis.

Spontaneous aortocaval fistula: CT findings with pathologic correlation.

We present a case of aortocaval fistula (ACF) secondary to spontaneous rupture of an atherosclerotic infrarenal aortic aneurysm into the inferior vena cava that was initially diagnosed with computed tomography (CT). This is believed to be the first report of this condition with CT demonstration of the exact site of fistula and CT-pathologic correlation. We retrospectively reviewed the CT findings of another two cases of ACF and the previous literature.

[Safety of meningococcal A and C vaccine. Data from the Spanish drug surveillance system. Meningococcal Vaccine Research Group of the Spanish System of Drug Surveillance].

OBJECTIVE: Data on meningococcal vaccines safety are scanty. In 1997 several vaccination campaign took place in Spain. Thus, this situation was used to improve our knowledge about the safety profile of this vaccine. METHODS: An inquiry was carried out to the Regional Centers of the Spanish Pharmacovigilance System to know the number of vaccinated people and the type and number of suspected cases of adverse reactions. RESULTS: There were 133 identified cases of suspected adverse reactions associated with meningococcal A and C vaccine until June 1st, 1998. Most of them affected the skin (25,3%) or nervous system (similar proportion). Those of allergic reactions accounted for 35,2%. Two cases were considered as severe, although they were resolved without secuelae. CONCLUSIONS: Serious risks were not detected. The Spanish Pharmacosurveillance System as an epidemiological surveillance resource has been useful to know the safety problems associated with antimeningococcal vaccine in the community.

Septal thickening: HRCT findings and differential diagnosis.

Thickening of the interlobular septa is a common and easily recognized high-resolution computed tomography feature of many diffuse lung diseases. In some cases, it is the predominant radiological finding. This article reviews the spectrum of entities that commonly present with thickening of the interlobular septa as the main radiological feature and establishes a practical approach for the differential diagnosis.

HOXB homeobox gene expression in cervical carcinoma.

The homeobox (HOX) genes are a family of transcription factors that bind to specific DNA sequences in target genes regulating gene expression. Thirty-nine HOX genes have been mapped in four conserved clusters: A, B, C, and D; they act as master genes regulating the identity of body segments along the anteroposterior axis of the embryo. The role played by HOX genes in adult cell differentiation is unclear to date, but growing evidence suggests that they may play an important role in the development of cancer. To study the role played by HOX genes in cervical cancer, in the present work, we analyzed the expression of HOXB genes and the localization of their transcripts in human cervical tissues. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis and nonradioactive RNA in situ hybridization were used to detect HOXB expression in 11 normal cervical tissues and 17 cervical carcinomas. It was determined that HOXB1, B3, B5, B6, B7, B8, and B9 genes are expressed in normal adult cervical epithelium and squamous cervical carcinomas. Interestingly, HOXB2, HOXB4, and HOXB13 gene expression was found only in tumor tissues. Our findings suggest that the new expression of HOXB2, HOXB4, and B13 genes is involved in cervical cancer.

Hepatitis G virus infection in hemodialysis patients and its relationship with hepatitis C virus infection.

Our aim was to study the characteristics of hepatitis G virus (HGV) infection in hemodialysis (HD) patients. We evaluated 108 patients from two different units (A: 67 patients; B: 41 patients). HGV RNA and HCV RNA were detected by PCR. Nineteen patients (17.6%) were HGV RNA positive (20.9% in unit A and 12.2% in unit B (NS)). HCV RNA was positive in 19 patients (17.6%) (28.4% in unit A and 0 in unit B (p < 0.01)). Eight patients were HGV RNA and HCV RNA positive (group I), 11 HGV RNA positive (group II), 11 HCV RNA positive (group III), and 78 negative for both viruses (group IV). Time on HD was 51.3 +/- 37.0 months for group I, 36.0 +/- 27.9 months for group II, 63.5 +/- 40.2 months for group III, and 26.4 +/- 27.1 months for group IV (p < 0.01 for I and III). Seven patients (87.5%) from group I, 9 (81.8%) from group II, 10 (90.9%) from group III, and 44 (56.4%) from group IV had a history of transfusion (p < 0.03 for I, II and III). Two patients (25%) from group I, none from group II, 5 (45.4%) from group III, and 6 (7.7%) from group IV had chronic ALAT elevation (p < 0.01 for I and III). We conclude that HGV infection was frequent in our HD patients, related to transfusions and independent of HCV prevalence, and that HGV infection itself was not a cause of ALAT elevation suggesting chronic hepatitis.
