[Single administration of a progesterone preparation during early gravidity of gilts following synchronized ovulation and induction of puberty to lower the age of first insemination].

The action of one single injection of 62.5 mg of hydroxy-progesterone-capronate on the 14th day after first insemination was tested for the purpose of defining the fertility performance of 180 gilts with synchronised ovulation and induced puberty. Synchronised ovulation caused significant rise in litter size and enhancement in gravidity rates. By comparison with a control group, the number of piglets born additional to each first insemination was 2.3. Induction of puberty to lower first-insemination age was of significant positive effect only on the pregnancy result, and somewhat fewer piglets were actually born. Nevertheless, the surplus birth figure to each first insemination was 2.1, as compared to untreated sows. The positive effect on puberty-induced animals was inversely proportional to daily weight rise.

[Light-chain plasmacytoma with reversible renal insufficiency after intravascular application of thorotrast (author's transl)].

Thirty-three years after intravascular injection of Thorotrast, a light-chain plasmacytoma with hypercalcemia and renal insufficiency was diagnosed in a 60-year-old man. The question of causal relation between Thorotrast deposit and plasmacytoma is discussed. The accumulated radiation load to the bone-marrow as caused by thorium dioxide deposition amounts to circa 3000 rem. According to casuistic and epidemiological communications, induction of plasmacytomas by external X-irradiation may be regarded as possible. A distinct increase in myeloproliferative diseases but only small numbers of plasmacytomas are reported in extensive epidemiological Thorotrast studies. From combination of results of the three most comprehensive epidemiological Thorotrast studies is obtained a numerical ratio of 1:5 for the spontaneous rate against the number of plasmacytomas observed. Identical correlations are yielded by investigations at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Hence it is to be supposed that also plasmacytomas can be induced by thorotrastosis of the reticulohistiocytic system.

[Antihypertensive therapy with a new beta-blocking agent Timolol. Double blind study and comparison with Alprenolol and Pindolol (author's transl)].

In a double blind study including 24 patients with essential hypertension the beta-blocking agent Timolol showed a mild antihypertensive effect. These patients had been pretreated with hydrochlorothiazid to which they responded already with a significant lowering of their blood pressure before Timolol was added. The effect of Timolol equals the effects of Pindolol and Alprenolol. We also found a suppression of the plasma-renin-activity under Timolol. This effect did not correlate with the degree of blood pressure reduction. There were no side effects noted except for a lowering of the pulse rate about which some of the patients complained and which is typical for beta blocking agents without intrinsic symphaticomimetic activity. According to our results this new beta blocking agent for antihypertensive therapy has very much the same properties as the other beta-blocking drugs already in use.

[Results of the dye dilution technic in peripheral arteriovenous fistulas and hyperthyroidism].

Dye dilution curves (DDC) from 35 patients with arteriovenous fistulas and from 22 patients with hyperthyreoidism were performed and compared with results in 122 healthy subjects. In most cases Cardiogreen was injected into an antecubital vein during reactive hyperaemia. On the arterial side, dye concentrations were recorded by ear oximetry. The appearance time was shortened in most cases. During dilution time dye curves were interrupted by an early recirculation in hyperthyreoidism, whereas in 29 patients with haemodialysis fistulas this interruption was discrete and detectable only when compared with results after occlusion of the fistulas. Different shapes of dilution curves were observed: 1. in most cases DDC seemed to be normal or near normal, often with an accelerated indicator passage; 2. DDC with an interruption of the dilution limb by an early recirculation; 3. DDD, showing a hump of the dilution limb; 4. asymmetrical DDC or DDC with a flat shoulder of the dilution limb and without a recirculation wave. Patients with hyperthyreoidism and arteriovenous fistulas had no different shapes of dilution curves. The results are discussed with special reference to the DDC in patients with central left-to-right shunts.

Laser versus radiofrequency catheter ablation of ventricular myocardium in dogs: a comparative test.

To compare the effects of laser light with those of radiofrequency (RF) current on ventricular myocardium, a total of 36 lesions (endocardial approach n = 10 each and epicardial approach n = 8 each) were produced by either transcatheter laser (Nd:YAG, 1,064 nm, 30 W, 30 s) or RF (70 degrees C, 30 s) catheter applications in the beating hearts of 4 dogs. Volumes of coagulated myocardium in endo-/epicardial approaches were 996 +/- 73/1,075 +/- 82 (laser) and 111 +/- 38/44 +/- 5 mm3 (RF). RF lesions showed intramural bleeding, rupture and dissociation of myocardial fibers, tissue vaporization with crater and thrombus formation. Transcatheter application of laser light produced significantly larger and better reproducible lesions than RF current, without undesirable effects on the ventricular walls.
