Retroperitoneal fibrosis caused by carcinoid tumour.

This report describes a 33-year-old woman who presented with renovascular hypertension secondary to retroperitoneal fibrosis, associated with a carcinoid tumour with widespread metastases. Although the association is rare, it is important to consider carcinoid tumour as a cause of idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis, even in the absence of the carcinoid syndrome.

Visual prognosis in pituitary tumors.

In a study of 15 patients with pituitary adenoma, preoperative and postoperative evaluation of peripapillary nerve fibers by red-free fundus examination showed that a good correlation exists between preoperative loss of peripapillary nerve fibers and the final visual outcome.

Involvement of iron and free radicals in benzene toxicity.

The 59Fe distribution after a single i.v. injection of 59Fe citrate in rats exposed to benzene was studied in circulating erythrocytes and organs up to period of 1 hr to 14 days. The iron content was significantly higher in bone marrow and liver compared to a control group of animals. A few cells with hemosiderin granules were observed in the benzene-administered group. Benzene increased lipid peroxidation in the liver and bone marrow and iron accelerated it further. Superoxide dismutase activities measured in terms of epinephrine auto-oxidation, an indirect measure of superoxide anion generation was enhanced in the benzene-treated groups. The data suggest the involvement of oxygen activation in benzene toxicity.

Stimulation of rat liver 4-hydroxybenzoate: polyprenyl transferase activity by a cytosolic protein factor; evidence for a polyprenyl pyrophosphate transport protein.

Rat liver postmicrosomal supernatant contains a factor which stimulates the 4-hydroxybenzoate:polyprenyl transferase activity of whole mitochondria and inner mitochondrial membrane fragments. The factor involved appears to be a heat stable, nondializable protein sensitive to tryptic hydrolysis and has been partially purified. Since this protein binds nonaprenyl pyrophosphate and stimulates its transport into mitochondria but shows no similar effect with 4-hydroxybenzoate, it is suggested that this protein also acts as an all trans polyprenyl pyrophosphate carrier protein.

Long-term aging behavior of ultraviolet-absorbing intraocular lenses.

The chemical composition and molecular weight distribution of typical materials used for fabrication of intraocular lenses have been determined by high performance liquid chromatography and on-line electronic and FT-IR spectroscopic analysis. The leaching rate of unreacted monomers was determined by Soxhlet extraction techniques. These analytical methods were then utilized to monitor chemical changes in one type of intraocular lens subjected to accelerated aging conditions.
