This survey focuses on recent developments in the far ultraviolet photochemistry of nucleic acids and related model compounds. The photoproducts discussed are the cyclobutidipyrimidines, the pyrimidine-pyrimidone adducts, the purine-pyrimidine adducts and the addition products of amino acids to pyrimidine bases. The specific aspects of the high-intensity laser photochemistry of nucleic acid components are also briefly reviewed.
The structure of (+)-cis-(5S,6R)-5,6-dihydroxy-5,6-dihydrothymidine was obtained using X-ray crystallography [space group P2(1) with a = 10.130(3) angstroms, b = 6.434(9) angstroms, c = 11.02(5) angstroms, and beta = 112.646(2) angstroms]. The comparison of the two cis diastereoisomers of thymidine glycol (I, II) showed several structural and conformational differences. The solid state structures appear to be in agreement with the results of 1H NMR studies which were carried out in aqueous solution. Conformational and electronic properties of the ground state of the molecules I and II were obtained using ab initio LSD-DFT theory. Only slight differences between the crystal structure and the optimized geometry are observed for each of the two oxidized nucleosides. On the other hand, molecules I and II exhibit significant differences in their electronic properties. In particular, the dipole moment of (5S,6R)-thymidine glycol (I) is twice smaller than that of the (5R,6S) diastereoisomer (II). It is noteworthy that these differences in the electronic properties between the two compounds may be related to changes in the rotameric population around the C4'-C5' bond. The repartition of the electrostatic potential is different in the two compounds. These observations lead to a better understanding of the structural changes when the above lesions are included within a DNA molecule.

Four types of couples have been identified, based on the presence or not of a tacit contract between husband and wife and on their egalitarian or unegalitarian relationship. Each type is analyzed as concerns such items as the conduct of daily life, the negotiation process involved in it, the management of disabilities. Management of disabilities varies according to the above-mentioned typology. Therefore the relationship between husband and wife is extremely important in handling disabilities of the elderly people.

Eight cases of intracranial arachnoid cysts are reported. They are benign congenital lesions who result from an abnormal development of the earliest arachnoid. A subsequent development is possible. The macrocephaly is the first sign and other symptoms give evidence to the localization. Thanks to the C.T. scan one can make the diagnosis, appraise the repercussion and put the therapeutic indications. The surgical treatment is reserved to symptomatic forms. The peritoneal shunt takes the ablation's place. This method is easier and less liable to complications. The results depend on the localization, the pattern of operation and the precocity of the diagnosis.

The article displays the findings of a survey conducted among 34 husbands and 41 wives who are helping their disabled spouses. The questionnaire deals with the degree of dependency of the helped spouse, his/her health status, the health status of the helper, how the latter copes with the helping tasks, how these tasks are felt and carried out, how is the relationship between the spouses in the past and at present, what are the prospects envisaged by the helper regarding in particular the transfer of the disabled spouse to a nursing home. A scale is used for measuring the various answers.

Age greater than 75 years modifies the conditions of drug treatment of cardiovascular diseases. The quantity of drug absorbed remains stable, but its bioavailability is increased and its hepatic and/or renal elimination is limited and delayed. In these patients, a dosage less than the recommended adult dosage must be prescribed and, when necessary, plasma assays should be performed, especially for substances whose therapeutic dose is close to the toxic dose. The patients level of cognitive and visual functioning, medical history and socio-familial environment must also be taken into account. The nature of concomitant diseases, the number of prescribers and the content of prescriptions must also be known in order to avoid drug interactions. When these precautions are respected, the risk of cardiovascular drugs is not higher in elderly cardiac and hypertensive patients than in younger subjects.
