Cast metal prostheses are considered to be one of the best ways to restore the morphology and function of missing teeth. However, the success of fixed prosthesis therapy is mainly to be judged on its durability. It is therefore important to know how cemented prostheses behave in the mouth. A protocol for an in vivo study was set up to analyse the influence of time on the release of zinc ions from zinc orthophosphate cements used at the tooth-prosthesis interface.
In this study 106 hypertensive patients (male n = 63, female n = 43) with angiographically proven renal artery stenosis (RAS) had PTA in 131 renal arteries (AS n = 86, FMD (fibromuscular dysplasia) n = 16, renal transplant n = 3, aortorenal bypass n = 1). Technical success rate was 86%, major complications were 3.5%, and minor complications were 12.8%. Following PTA (3-52 mo.) blood pressure was normalised in 25% (23/91), improved in 44% (40/91), and remained unchanged in 31% (28/91). Elevated serum creatinine levels (n = 26) (mean of 2.4 mg% before PTA) were regredient in 13 cases, remained stable in 6 cases, and were progredient in 7 cases. In short ostial RAS, technical and clinical results were not satisfactory. Long-term results were found to be better with FMD than with arteriosclerosis, with normal creatinine than with elevated levels, residual RAS after PTA of less than 50%, and with normal contralateral kidney function.

This report deals with 24 patients with pulmonary manifestations of sarcoidosis who were examined by means of high-resolution computed tomography. The characteristic findings were rounded masses of all sizes and shapes. Other findings were ground glass opacities and thickened septal walls. In the advanced stage fibrous strands and intrapulmonary cavities could be seen. High-resolution tomography allows better detection of fine granulomas and better recognition of their anatomic relationship to the pulmonary substructures, facilitating differential diagnosis against other interstitial lung diseases.

Ten patients with arterial hypertension and chronic heart failure (stages NYHA I and II) were treated in a pilot study with a combination of 50 mg triamteren and 25 mg of hydrochlorothiazide for 20 days under clinical conditions. The purpose of this investigation was to determine hemorheological alterations in comparison with initial data after treatment with a common diuretic combination. The influence of the therapy on hematocrit, number of leucocytes and thrombocytes as well as fibrinogen-mediated hemorheological parameters was not significant. Statistically significant (p = 0.0215) was the improvement of erythrocyte-fluidity, which indicates a positive influence of the diuretic combination on the erythrocyte membrane. Furthermore a very effective, statistically significant (p less than 0.05) decrease of blood pressure appeared, even down to a normal standard. Discussions on negative effects of diuretic therapy on hemoconcentration hitherto reported in literature are not attempted by this investigation.
A completely thrombosed aneurysm of the popliteal artery may mimic a simple vascular occlusion both clinically and angiographically. If therapeutical interventions are planned for recanalisation a popliteal aneurysm must be excluded because in such cases vascular surgery is the method of choice. In 11 of 26 patients with an angiographically proven unilateral popliteal occlusion, contrast CT could demonstrate an aneurysm (unilateral n = 7, bilateral n = 4). Real time sonography could confirm unilateral thrombosed aneurysm in 10 of 11 cases; a partially thrombosed contralateral aneurysm was detected in all 4 cases. In contrast to a non-reliable palpable finding both US and or CT are useful in detecting an aneurysmatic degeneration of the popliteal artery. Previous identification of an aneurysm of the abdominal aorta or femoral artery may be helpful in patient selection.
Summarizing several studies, it can be shown that the new cell separator AS-104 (Fresenius), in comparison to the older systems, provides a real advantage concerning the separation efficiency, the purity of the platelet concentrates (PC), the platelet function and the donor safety. The results of 5 different separation protocols demonstrate the technical flexibility and developmental potential of this system. From the experience of 580 plateletapheresis runs the successful improvement of the cell separator, and the disposables can be documented as the frequency of disturbances and discontinuations are reduced considerably. The preliminary results of an uncontrolled, not randomized transfusion study of 244 transfusions in 49 patients show comparable posttransfusion increments as obtained with PC of the CS-3000 (Baxter).

Non-surgical management of ilio-femoropopliteal occlusive arterial disease can be performed by different catheter procedures, including laser angioplasty. In this study preliminary results were presented in patients with complete chronic arterial occlusion (n = 30), using a Nd-YAG laser system in combination with adjuvant catheter methods (balloon dilatation: n = 30; catheter fibrinolysis: n = 4; catheter atherectomy: n = 1). A primary patency rate of 24/30 (80%) was observed using the laser probe. Early reocclusion occurred in 4 cases, non-complicated perforation in 4, dissection of the vessel wall in 2 cases, and macroembolization into the peripheral arteries in the other 3 cases. In 1 patient laser recanalization failed due to extensive calcification. Our results demonstrate that laser angioplasty seems to play an important adjuvant role in the management of chronic arterial occlusion in the lower extremities.
