[Structural dynamics of strains of a hepatitis B virus population in the Ukraine and its etiological prognosis].

Changes in the population structure of influenza B virus in the Ukraine since 1980 has been studied. New strains of the virus have been identified and the epidemic potentials of different strains have been compared. The data on the drift mechanism of the origin of the intermediate strains of influenza B virus have been observed. A suggestion on the etiological prognostication of the epidemic process has been made.

[Early detection and rapid identification of Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae in acute pneumonias].

The comparative study of the diagnostic value of the enzyme immunoassay (EIA), indirect immunofluorescence (IF) and countercurrent immunoelectrophoresis (CIE) was made. The serological identification of the isolated and reference pneumococci (19) and H. influenzae (38) strains revealed the possibility of using all three microanalytical methods for this purpose. The study of pneumococcal and H. influenzae antigens in native sputum obtained from 74 patients with acute pneumonia showed that EIA and indirect IF were highly sensitive, their sensitivity considerably exceeding that of the bacteriological analysis. Pneumococcal antigens were detected in 66.2% of patients by EIA and in 54.0% of patients by indirect IF, while H. influenzae antigens were detected in 58.1% of patients by EIA and in 67.6% of patients by indirect IF. The sensitivity of CIE proved to be considerably lower; in the detection of pneumococcal antigens it was level with the sensitivity of the bacteriological analysis (23.0%) and H. influenzae antigens could be detected only in 27.0% of patients.

[Prevention of hepatitis B in the surgical clinic].

The introduction of prophylactics of hepatitis B in surgical departments results in 2 times lower growth of HBsAg carriers among medical men. The main prophylactic measures consist in an analysis of the donor blood and HBsAg examination of surgical patients, treatment of HBsAg carriers as acutely contagious persons, centralized sterilization of medical instruments and individual protection of the personnel.

[Detection of immunosuppression factors in Shigella sonnei].

A factor, making noninvasive shigellae and other bacteria capable of suppressing immunological memory and secondary immune response manifested as delayed hypersensitivity, has been detected in the germ-free filtrates of the broth cultures of invasive S. sonnei.

Fatty acid composition of bacteria as a chemotaxonomic criterion.

The paper reviews data on the fatty acid composition of bacteria as a taxonomic criterion useful for the identification of bacteria and specifying their classification. Variations in the fatty acid composition of bacteria associated with culturing conditions and due largely to the adaptive role of fatty acids in the bacterial cell require that standard conditions be maintained while examining that character. In some cases, adjustment of culturing conditions may be a factor providing for the identification of specificities in the fatty acid profile of bacteria of related species. The use of data on the fatty acid composition of bacteria has promising applications in confirming and establishing their phylogenetic relationship, that being accomplished not only on the basis of similarity in the character under consideration which correlates with similarity in genotypic and other phenotypic characters, but by analyzing its adaptive variability as well. The latter approach is especially promising for creating a natural classification. It is pointed out that the determination of the fatty acid composition of the lipid component of lipopolysaccharides from Gram-negative bacteria is useful as it supplies additional taxonomic information.
