Benzamidine derivatives exhibited a high antiviral effect in vivo against influenza virus strains A2/Adachi and B/Lee. The inhibiting properties of anti-influenza benzamidine derivatives on the virus-induced inflammation undoubtedly plays an important role in the clarification of the mechanism of action of these drugs.

A new antimetabolite antibiotic, U-42,126, was discovered by use of a specific in vitro screen. U-42,126 was produced by the fermentation of Streptomyces sviceus. Its antimicrobial activity in vitro was limited to fungi. Certain bacteria were inhibited only when cultivated in completely synthetic media. U-42,126 was active in vivo against L1210 leukemia in mice.

Streptomyces spores surfaces have been classified into five groups, smooth, warty, spiny, hairy, and rugose, by examination of carbon replicas of spores with the transmission electron microscope and by direct examination of spores with the scanning electron microscope.
Scopafungin (U-29,479) is a crystalline, nonpolyenic antimicrobial agent obtained from the culture broth of Streptomyces hygroscopicus var. enhygrus var. nova UC-2397. Scopafungin inhibits, in vitro, a variety of pathogenic fungi, yeasts, and gram-positive bacteria.

Lomofungin is a new antimicrobial agent obtained from the culture broth of Streptomyces lomondensis sp. n. UC-5022. Lomofungin is an acidic, olive-yellow, crystalline compound which inhibits, in vitro, a variety of pathogenic fungi, yeasts, and gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
Distinctive variations in whole spore morphology and spore surface morphology of Streptomyces hygroscopicus strains, which had been observed previously by the authors by the preshadowed carbon replica technique, were confirmed by observations with the scanning electron microscope.
