Drug treatment of changes in platelet-vessel wall interactions in burned rats.

The interaction between blood platelets and the walls of blood vessels is changed after burn injury to rats and guinea-pigs. Treatment of burned experimental animals with heparin, nicotinic acid, thrental, phytin, glutamic acid and alpha-tocopherol inhibited the increase in platelet-vascular wall interaction, improved the microcirculation in mesenteric vessels and increased the endurance of the animals to physical stress.

[Functional state of the hypophyseal-adrenal system in lung cancer].

The results are reported on studies of the secretion of adrenocorticotropic (ACTH), somatotropic (STH) hormones and cortisol, using a standard set for in vitro diagnosis. A total of 66 patients aged 31--70 (64 males and 2 females) have been examined. Among these patients stage II was noted in 17, stage III--in 31, stage IV--in 18. In 19 of them a peripheral cancer and in 47--central cancer was detected. The data obtained indicate an increased basal level of ACTH, STH, cortisol which is directly dependent on the cancer process stage. The maximum increased level of these hormones was noted in low differentiated cancer of the lung.

[The study of isoenzymes of esterase, lactate dehydrogenase and alkaline phosphatase from blood serum in lymphogranulomatous process of liver tissue].

In blood serum of patients with lymphogranulomatose, as compared with healthy persons, a decrease in activity of one of the arylesterase fractions was observed. In lymphogranulomatous process content of this fraction and content of cholinesterase were decreased in liver tissue more distinctly than in the blood. At the same time the arylesterase activity was increased; the enzyme was found only in trace amount in normal liver tissue. The impairments in content of lactate dehydrogenase isozymes were less distinct. In lymphogranulomatose the activity of alkaline phosphatase was increased, especially in cases accompanied by impairment of liver tissue.

[Thyroliberin test after treatment of thyrotoxicosis].

The thyroliberin (TRH) test was used for examining 343 persons. The substance was injected intravenously in a dose of 200 micrograms, with thyrotropin (TTH) being studied by radioimmunoassay before and 30 minutes after stimulation. The test was performed over time after operation and drug treatment of diffuse toxic goiter in the course of 1-3 years of follow up. The test was ascertained to be informative for thyrotoxicosis. During mercazolyl treatment the increase in the test estimates was slow in progress. After the attainment of euthyrosis these estimates were on the average below normal (for 3-6 months). The pituitary reserves of TTH were not recovered until one year after operation and drug treatment. If thyrotoxicosis recurred, the test estimates dramatically fell again, but exceeded normal in the development of hypothyrosis that mostly ran a latent and subclinical course. The test is of importance for the diagnosis of thyrotoxicosis and appraisal of the time course of the health status after drug treatment, since it helps individualize the treatment and identify the relapse or excessive suppression of thyroid function. Repeated making of the TRH test after strumectomy enables making early diagnosis and prediction of hyperthyrosis. After mercazolyl treatment hypothyrosis is commonly reversible whereas postoperative hypothyrosis normally progresses, thereby requiring substitution therapy.
