[The efficacy of trimetazidine in cochleovestibular disorders of ischemic origin. A crossover control versus placebo trial].

In order to assess the efficacy of trimetazidine in the treatment of ischemia-related cochleovestibular disorders, we carried out a double-blind placebo-controlled study with crossover. Each treatment period spanned 2 months, during which the patients were given either trimetazidine (20 mg tid) or placebo, following a two-week washout period. Enrolled in the study were 45 patients (aged 32 to 69 years) presenting cochleovestibular symptoms (tinnitus, vertigo, hearing loss). Tinnitus occurred in 99.7% of cases, deafness in 88.8%, and vertigo in 68.8% of cases. Pure-tone and speech audiometric data were not modified. Improvement was felt primarily with respect to subjective symptoms. The intensity of vertigo events and the duration of the spells improved much more substantially by trimetazidine and placebo, although the limited number of patients studied did not allow to reach the threshold of significance. The activity of trimetazidine was particularly apparent in relation to tinnitus. The intensity of the latter symptom as well as the degree of discomfort occasioned by it diminished more significantly with trimetazidine than placebo following a 2-month treatment period (p less than 0.05 and p less than 0.02, respectively). These results underscore the therapeutical efficacy of trimetazidine in the treatment of cochleovestibular syndromes, as assessed by a rigorously controlled double-blind trial with crossover versus placebo using a reliable methodology.

Adult

Olfactory involvement in learning processes.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the existing relations between olfaction and acquisition of the two-way conditioned avoidance response (CAR). For this investigation we have used white adult male Wistar rats. Taking into consideration that several structures of the limbic system participate in learning and memory processes and also that olfactory pathway is believed to have connections with the limbic system, we thought it would be interesting to investigate, if peripheral anosmia influences the performance of rats in the two-way avoidance response. It was shown that peripheral anosmia in rats impaired conditioned avoidance response.

Animals

The importance of angiography in tumours of the head and neck.

Reference is made to five cases appearing as expansive lesions in the head and neck. In all cases angiography allowed a precise diagnosis of the nature and extent of the lesion. Biopsy which could have been hazardous was thus unnecessary. Moreover, therapeutic embolization in a case of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma prevented massive bleeding during surgery.

Adolescent

Chondrosarcoma of the larynx.

We report one case of chondrosarcoma of the larynx, which is considered to be rather uncommon. Clinical signs and symptoms have been noted, as well as some suggestions on the aetiology, incidence and site of cartliaginous tumours of the larynx.

Aged

Vasomotor rhinitis: psychosomatic conditions and treatment.

The importance of the autonomic nervous system in vasomotor conditions of the nose was outlined. The symptoms, findings and differential diagnosis of the vasomator rhinitis were reviewed. Reference is made to the applied treatment and results obtained with different antistaminics in 2150 patients.
