Ultrastructural aspects of infertility.

Organ culture studies have demonstrated that 17beta oestradiol can cause the rapid deterioration and dissolution of pre-existing nuclear channel systems in the human endometrial glandular cell. The importance of the nuclear channel system in implantation is emphasized and the implications of secretory activity in the endometrium of an infertile woman are discussed.

The submucosa of the human colon.

Full-thickness specimens of colon were obtained at operation or autopsy from 20 patients. The submucosa was isolated from the mucosa and muscularis externa, with confirmation by light microscopy. Submucosal specimens were then fixed and prepared for scanning and transmission electron microscopy, with preservation of their orientation. The submucosa was found to consist of a series of layers of collagen fibres, each layer 0.5-2.0 microns thick. The fibres within each layer were co-directionally orientated. The autopsy specimens were comparable in appearance with the operative ones. The mean diameter of the collagen fibrils was 69 +/- 13 nm, and the mean fibril count per unit area was 159 +/- 58/microns2.

A review of the forensic investigation of scuba diving deaths.

With more people engaging in recreational scuba diving, fatalities from this sport are encountered by forensic investigators. There is a plethora of factors contributing to death and the investigator must be acquainted with how to elucidate them. The emphasis is on a multi-disciplinary approach that involves co-divers and instructors, the rescue team, the police, forensic scientists, diving equipment suppliers, underwater physiologists and physicians, decompression chamber personnel, general practitioners, relatives and the forensic pathologist. This report presents the various factors contributing to scuba diving deaths and suggests how to conduct such investigations.

Dysplastic epithelial changes in nasal polyps.

In 33 patients undergoing nasal polypectomy, severely dysplastic or intraepithelial malignancy was observed focally in the surface lining of these polyps. Follow-up on 29 of these patients showed that the changes did not recur or progress to invasive tumor, and that local excision was curative. Investigations as to the possible causation of such changes failed to provide any answers. Other hypotheses in relation to the pathogenesis and significance of these changes are put forward.
