A case of fibrosarcoma of the extraperitoneal connective tissue of the right rectus muscle with rupture intra partum is reported. A review of the literature is presented. The prognosis after treatment by two consecutive operations and irradiation is discussed.
An epidemic of acute pharyngitis involving 280 cases occurred in a kibbutz in Israel during the fall and winter of 1972-1973. Group M and/or T type 12 streptococci was associated with the outbreak. No cases of rheumatic fever and no acute nephritis appeared in spite of the vigorous immune response to both cellular and extracellular antigens of group A streptococci documented in 50% to 80% of patients, suggesting that strain variation may be a feature of rheumatogenicity as well as nephritogenicity of group A streptococcal pharyngitis.
The present study describes a method which simplifies the preparation of type-specific anti-M streptococcal sera. The procedure is based on vaccination with acid-hydrolyzed cells. The method makes possible the preparation of antisera from M strains which are problematic by conventional vaccination and is very useful for preparing all anti-M sera. The antisera obtained by the above method are devoid or almost devoid of cross-reactive antibodies.
234 Austrian women gave birth to a child in the years 1972--74 before the age of 18. 95 of them were invited to an interview and interrogated about changes in their life-situation due to the birth. The general attitude was, if they could choose again the date of the first pregnancy they would prefer after 20 years. No correlation was found between early menarche and early sexual intercourse. For 60 of the women pregnancy was the reason for their marriage. Most of the young women had experience with contraceptives, but did not use them for different reasons. After the birth of the child most of them took the pill, but there are 11 women left without any contraception, exposing themselves to the risk of a repeat pregnancy. Young age at birth has an impact upon pre-vocational training: either through interruption of the training or through total discontinuation of their education. A possible solution of the present unsatisfactory situation for young pregnant women and their social problems are interdisciplinary projects for the guidance of adolescents in some centers in the USA.
110 tubal sterilizations by Pomeroy's technique were performed in the years 1973--75. 78 cases were examined by hysterosalpingography. In 14 cases the ligature was located close to the intersitial portion of the tube (proximal type), in 52 cases in the isthmic ampullary junction or close to the ampulla (distal type) and in 12 cases on one side proximal type and on the other distal type. In 2 cases of the latter group failure of the ligature was confirmed by contrast medium in the pelvic cavity. The occluded portion of the tube was on the average longer after coeliotomy in comparison with laparotomy. Occluded tubes with smooth distribution of contrast-medium showed good peristaltic activity. Hydrosalpinx never developped, although often reported in the literature. A spill over of contrast-medium into the surrounding tissue was observed only in two cases. This low incidence indicates that the phenomenon is not caused by application of to high pressure.
Report on a further case of fetal hydrocephalus; during delivery intracranial and intrauterine pressure is registered: an average labour intensity of 56,5 mm Hg corresponds to an average pressure intensity of 63,4 mm Hg in the interior skull. Analogic conclusions concerning pressure conditions in normally developed skulls are discussed.
The maternal mortality rate of 22.4 per 100,000 live births in 1973 is the lowest recorded in Austria. The figures for Austria are compared with the data from other European countries with similar health systems. Austria reflects the overall trend of a decreasing maternal mortality rate. 10 cases of maternal death recorded per 16,447 live births in the 2nd Department of Obstetrics, University of Vienna are presented and discussed with respect to the clinical diagnosis and compared with the main causes of maternal death in the national and international literature. As in other countries, haemorrhage in 3 out of the 10 cases ranks first, whilst in Austria generally, toxaemia has been the most common cause of death in recent years. The main cause of the bleeding is undetected rupture of the uterus, which is frequently concealed behind the clinical diagnosis of circulatory failure with cardiac arrest. 2/3 of the observed cases in the present series are considered to have been avoidable. It is recommended that in future every single reported case of maternal death in Austria is analyzed and the cause of death and the degree of avoidability discussed as is done in England.
Adolescents consulting the family planning clinic in Vienna seldom use contraceptives before the age of seventeen or use a method with a high risk of pregnancy. Thereafter a marked increase in the number of pill-users is observed. All other methods of contraception, including the rhythm method, condom, diaphragm and chemical methods are employed only to a negligible extent. These results are compared with the figures of other countries, where, in general, a higher number of pill-users is reported. It is concluded that the recommendation of traditional methods of contraception by doctors does not seem practicable on account of the positive trend towards the pill among adolescents. The basis for prescription of oral contraceptives to adolescents is critically reviewed and revised.
Serum concentrations of the immunoglobulins IgG, IgM and IgA were assayed by single radial immunodiffusion in 37 women before insertion of Copper T IUD and 6 to 12 months subsequently. There was a tendency towards an increase in immuno-globulin levels with the IUD in situ, but the results were not of statistical significance.

It is generally accepted that in the case of ejection, the flexion posture is often the reason for vertebral body fracture, but to maintain the right egress posture (this means an erect or even hyperextended position) throughtout the entire duration of flight would increase pilot complaints about validly criticized misalignment of the seat profile. X-ray controlled seat studies led to the conclusion that an acceptable egress position does not allow relaxed sitting posture during normal cockpit activities over long periods. Therefore, an attempt at solution is being made by a seat device whose comfort is guaranteed by a back-rest construction variable at will. For emergency case, the posture will be optimized automatically and synchronically with the action of the power retraction unit. A schematic design outlines the construction.

In a retrospective study on 526 patients in a family-planning clinic the significance of physical constitution type and pill-tolerance was examined. If only one type of pill was administered statistically significant differences in the tolerance were not evident. When several types of pills were tried because of undesirable side-effects of a single pill a significantly higher tolerance of pills with a balanced hormone-composition could be demonstrated. The latter kind of pills was better tolerated by students than by salaried employees. This could be explained by an increased readiness for family-planning among undergraduate students. A correlation between physical constitution and pill tolerance could not be found in this statistical analysis and the widespread use of this criterion is questioned by the authors.
