Relationships between U.S. Navy carrier landing accidents and flight experience parameters.

Carrier arrested landing activity of all aviators flying naval attack and fighter aircraft were analized with aircraft accident data to determine whether statistical relationships exist between lifetime and recent experience variables, and accident liability. The results demonstrate that accident potential, though not statistically related to carrier landings in 30-d periods, is significantly correlated with lifetime experience and with landing activity in 7-d periods. The highest accident rates are associated with minimal amounts of total carrier experience. Moreover, accident liability for inexperience carrier aviators is lowest if number of landings in 7-d periods are high.

[Sex life after radical operations for cervical cancer].

75 sexual active women with invasive cervical carcinoma up to 55 years of age were treated by radical hysterectomy, part of them also with postoperative irradiation. Of primary interest were interviews with those 57 women (87,7%) whose marital relationship was not disturbed in the postoperative phase. No harmony in the partnership was found in 7,7%, manifestation occurred within 1 year after treatment. The causes were in many cases of psychosomatic nature. Reduced libido was found in 60,8%, 62,0% had their first sexual relationship within 3 months after treatment. No orgasm was reported before operation by 7,6%, by 23% after operation. 57,7% had sexual climax always or mostly after treatment. Reduced orgasm was rare in those women, whose partnership was not disturbed. Frequency of cohabitations was reduced. 11,5% reported preoperative painful coitus, 50,8% postoperative. The interviews of women by means of standardized questionnaires should become a routine measure within the rehabilitation and postoperative control program of gynecologic cancer patients. The establishment of self-help groups is recommended in order to control also the psychosocial components of the disease.

Preventive activity of Streptococcus viridans (Ab1III) against artificial colonization of pathogenic beta-hemolytic streptococci in rabbits.

A Streptococcus viridans strain (Ab1III) with a strong interfering activity against pathogenic beta-hemolytic streptococci in vitro was stuided for its inhibiting activity in vivo. Implantation of this strain into the oropharynx in rabbits provided them with complete resistance against artificially induced colonization of the upper respiratory tract by pathogenic beta-hemolytic streptococci.

The genetic control of maternal effects on mutations recovered from X-rayed mature Drosophila sperm.

Drosophila melanogaster males carrying a ring-X-chromosome were X-rayed and crossed to virgin females of 7 stocks, which had their second and third chromosomes systematically substituted. In the same experiment dominant lethals, sex-chromosome losses, and reciprocal translocations were recorded. Maternal effects on mutation fixation were observable as differences in the mutation frequencies observed with the different types of females. With the set of substitution stocks studied it was found that the maternal genotype strongly influences the frequencies of chromosome losses. The influences on classical chromosome-breakage phenomena, such as dominant lethals and translocations, however, are weak. The differences in the chromosome-loss frequencies may result either from different time intervals between insemination and the beginning of chromosome replication, and/or the efficiency of a repair system. One or more strong genetic factors responsible for such modifications could be located on the third chromosome. On the second chromosome, at best only weak factors are present.

[The behaviour of serum-coeruplasmin in women with intrauterine pessary containing copper (author's transl)].

In 50 women before and 10--35 weeks after insertion of a Copper-T-200 serum concentration of Caeruloplasmin was assayed. A decrease of serum concentration with statistical significance (p less than 0,0001) was determined. In 22 women before and 4--5 weeks after removal of a Copper-T-200 serum concentration of Caeruloplasmin was assayed. An increase of serum concentration with statistical significance (p less than 0.01) was determined.

[Uterine perforation in a legal abortion].

In the General Hospital Osijek, from 1974 to 1977, out of 15,716 legal abortions and 2323 abortions completed in the hospital, there were 16 perforations (0.08%) of most serious kind, two of them including injured intestines. The most serious complications followed abortions made in pregnancies exceeding 10 weeks.

[Acute-phase proteins in women with a copper IUD (author's transl)].

Acute-phase (AP) proteins haptoglobin, alpha1-antitrypsin and C-reactive protein were measured in 50 women before and 10 to 30 weeks after insertion of a copper T-200. No statistically significant increase in AP proteins was found. Since these proteins are synthesized in the liver, the results indicate the lack of a systemic humoral reaction of the organism in women with a copper-containing IUD.

[Results of radical Wertheim's operation 1964 to 1972 (author's transl)].

In the years 1964 to 1972 239 women with cervical carcinoma were treated by extended abdominal radical (Wertheim's) operation at the II. Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University of Vienna. The total number of invasive cervical carcinomas is decreasing in comparison with previous years, but the figure of 40% cases treated surgically remains stable. 69.5% of the women are alive after a 5-year observation period, the figure for stage Ib being 71.4% and for stage II 55.2%. In cases with positive lymph nodes an improved 5-year survival rate is demonstrated and the total number of patients who died of carcinoma is reduced in comparison with the respective figures for previous years.
