[Loss of neurons in the granular layer of the cerebellum in epilepsy].

Morphometric examination of the neurons in the cerebellar granular layer in epilepsy showed a significant mean decrease in their number. There is no correlation between this reduction and the duration of epilepsy or frequency of seizures, respectively. The pattern of lesions reach from slight patchy cell loss to severe diffuse reduction of neurons. The diameters of the granular neuronal nuclei showed a great variability. There is no correlation between age and the distribution of these diameters.

[Intraoperative rapid frozen section diagnosis of brain biopsies (author's transl)].

Cryostat sections guarantee a correct diagnosis in 98.4% of our brain biopsy cases. In skilled hands, small pieces of tissue can yield excellent sections, and in our laboratory cryostat sections are made as a rapid routine method of diagnosis with the advantage that the material then can be used for chemical, histochemical, cytophotometric or ultrastructural studies as well as for tissue culture.

[Histopathology of glioma relapses].

The histological structure of gliomas and their relapses is an expression of the biological behaviour and thus permits certain prognostic statements. Especially astrocytomas show a tendency to progressive dedifferentiation. In oligodendrogliomas there is a slight tendency to dedifferentiation and in ependymomas it is very seldom. Recurrent pilocytic astrocytomas are without dedifferentiation in our material. The change in the histological features found in many gliomas on the examination of relapses is to be considered as an expression of changed biological activity.

[Frequency of metastases of extracranial tumours in the choroid plexus (author's transl)].

5% of malignant extracranial tumours metastasize into the choroid plexus, especially tumours with a higher grade of malignancy. Metastases in the choroid plexus are more frequent than mestastases in the brain corresponding to the relation of weight of choroid plexus and brain. This fact can be explained with the vascularisation by capillaries containing endothelial pores. It remains obscure whether there are other special biochemical or immunological mechanisms too, causing the frequency of metastases in the choroid plexus.

[Trends in neuropathology (author's transl)].

Neuropathology has been originated in clinical necessity and trended progressively towards independence in the last 30 years all over the world. In the future, substance and methods in neuropathology demand a good correlation to clinical and theoretical branches of medicine and a solid integration in the manner to work and to think in modern morphology.

[Fundaments for a classification of CNS tumours (author's transl)].

A general effective classification of tumours of the central nervous system hats to be based on morphologic criteria of tissues. The cells are subordinated to the structure of the tissues. A simple classification according to morphologic structures is not quite satisfying, because each system of tumour types should permit to determine the diagnosis, the prognosis, the therapy, and the aetiology. In each classification of tumours the character of tissue and the biological behaviour should be considered only in mutual relationship. But this does not mean that in tumours of the central nervous system the degree of differentiation and the biological behaviour must agree.

[Complete gastric erosions--a relatively frequent gastroscopy finding].

While by means of the semiflexible Wolf-Schnidler-gastroscope no complete erosions had been seen, they were found in 12.7% in 615 gastroscopies, carried out with glass fibre endoscopes. In nearly 80% of the patients the erosions, appearing in most cases in a larger number, were localised in the antrum ventriculi. As the most frequent concomitant disease the gastroduodenal ulcer was found. Roentgenologically in no case the diagnosis erosion was made. As to the soft tissues defects of the epithelium could rarely be ascertained, however, more frequently a foveolar pseudohyperplasia as the morphological substrate of the marginal wall. Chronic-atrophic changes of the mucous membrane in the environment of the erosions were by far more frequently to be proved than superficial gastritides or normal findings on the mucous membrane of the stomach.

[External gastric fistula in neoplastic esophageal stenosis].

The leakage of gastric contents along the catheter introduced in the gastric lumen is the most frequent complication of the external gastric fistula made in cases of neoplastic esophageal occlusion. In 5 patients, the author applied the modified Witzel's operation using polyvinyl chloride catheter fixed on the skin to prevent it from disengaging. In all these patients the operative wound healed by first intention and no gastric leakage was observed.
