The CHCl3 extract of the Mediterranean sponge Clathrina clathrus was shown to contain three new sterols: (22 E)-3 beta-hydroxycholesta-5,8,22-trien-7-one (1), (22 E, 24 xi)-3 beta-hydroxy-24-methylcholesta-5,8,22-trien-7-one (2), and (22 E, 24 xi)-3 beta-hydroxy-24-ethylcholesta-5,8,22-trien-7-one (3), whose structures were elucidated on the basis of physico-chemical evidence.
PURPOSE: Dirofilaria repens infection is the most frequent and widespread dirofilariasis in the world. In Italy subcutaneous dirofilariasis is present especially in Northern-Central areas. METHODS: A woman with a palpebral lump is presented. RESULTS: After subcutaneous and muscular décollement, the authors found and removed a parasite. The final diagnosis was subcutaneous parasitosis due to D. repens. CONCLUSIONS: Surgery was both diagnostic and therapeutic.

Traditionally, it has been difficult to compare the clinical performance of carbide dental burs. The purpose of this laboratory study was to investigate the comparative cutting efficiency of number 330 dental burs from six manufacturers. These burs were tested utilizing custom-built equipment consisting of a frictionless air sled to which the Macor substrate was attached. The substrate was fed to the bur at constant pressure. The efficiency of each bur, defined as the distance of the cut divided by the time taken, then was calculated. Of the six bur types tested, only one was found to be markedly superior, and four types were comparable in performance.
