Contact allergic sensitivity to chrysanthemum and the photosensitivity dermatitis and actinic reticuloid syndrome.

Of sixty-nine examples of the photosensitivity dermatitis and actinic reticuloid syndrome, nine were found to be allergically sensitive to chrysanthemum oleoresin extract. Although this extract showed evidence in vitro of a phototoxic action we were unable with in vivo studies to explain the connection between the contact allergic sensitivity and the photosensitivity. The fractions responsible for the in vitro phototoxicity appear to be different from those involved in the in vivo contact allergic sensitivity. This study provides further support for the view that in the photosensitivity dermatitis and actinic reticuloid syndrome contact allergic sensitivity is of importance.

Contact allergic sensitivity to plants and the photosensitivity dermatitis and actinic reticuloid syndrome.

Contact allergic sensitivity to oleoresin extracts from Compositae plants was found to be usually present in individuals suffering from the photosensitivity dermatitis and actinic reticuloid syndrome. It was demonstrated in forty-seven out of fifty-five examples of this syndrome. These results provide support for the view that contact allergic sensitivity is an important aspect of the state of chronic photosensitivity in the middle-aged and elderly male.

Networks of human milk microbiota are associated with host genomics, childhood asthma, and allergic sensitization.

The human milk microbiota (HMM) is thought to influence the long-term health of offspring. However, its role in asthma and atopy and the impact of host genomics on HMM composition remain unclear. Through the CHILD Cohort Study, we followed 885 pregnant mothers and their offspring from birth to 5 years and determined that HMM was associated with maternal genomics and prevalence of childhood asthma and allergic sensitization (atopy) among human milk-fed infants. Network analysis identified modules of correlated microbes in human milk that were associated with subsequent asthma and atopy in preschool-aged children. Moreover, reduced alpha-diversity and increased Lawsonella abundance in HMM were associated with increased prevalence of childhood atopy. Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) identified maternal genetic loci (e.g., ADAMTS8, NPR1, and COTL1) associated with HMM implicated with asthma and atopy, notably Lawsonella and alpha-diversity. Thus, our study elucidates the role of host genomics on the HMM and its potential impact on childhood asthma and atopy.

Assessment of the influence of irrelevant IgE on allergic sensitivity to two independent allergens.

Serum samples from 31 patients sensitive to both ragweed and rye grass were quantitated for IgE specific for ragweed antigen E (AgE) and rye grass group I (rye I) antigens employing the previously described radioallergosorbent test (RAST) elution technique. IgE anti-AgE ranged from 0.4 to 320 ng/ml and comprised 0.4% to 14.2% of total serum IgE. The same sera contained IgE anti-rye I ranging from 7.9 to 1,168 ng/ml, comprising 1.6% to 29.6% of total serum IgE. A new theoretical parameter (RF), representing the percent of total IgE-Fc receptors of target cells occupied by allergen-specific IgE, was calculated for each IgE specificity by using the determinations of allergen-specific IgE antibody, total serum IgE, and assuming an equilibrium constant for binding of IgE molecules to basophils of 10(9)M-1. This "% occupancy" parameter correlated with skin test titration, basophil cell sensitivity, and hay fever symptom scores as well as, but not better than, the absolute values of allergen-specific IgE. This finding suggests that in most atopic patients, the quantity of irrelevant IgE plays a relatively minor role in determining allergic sensitivity to a given allergen. The implications of this finding are discussed.

Allergens

[Redox processes during sensitization and allergic reaction to microbial antigens].

The effect of sensitization and delayed allergic response (DAR) to brucellosis antigen on the processes of glycolysis and dehydrogenase activity of Krebs' cycle was studied. The increasing sensitivity to Brucella was accompanied by inhibition of the dehydrogenase activity and increasing glycolysis. The changes were more pronounced in sensitization to living brucella. In DAR not only the dehydrogenase activity but also the processes of glycolysis were inhibited. Reduction of the aerobic fractions and excess of isoenzyme spectrum lactate dehydrogenase was observed both in sensitization and in DAR. Correction of biochemical shifts produced decreasing sensitization and inhibiting DAR symptoms.

Allergic contact dermatitis from ultraviolet cured inks. Allergic contact sensitization to acrylates.

Eight men employed in the manufacture of ultraviolet cured inks developed allergic contact dermatitis predominantly on the exposed areas. Patch testing revealed sensitization to trimethylol propane triacrylate in seven employees, to 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate in six employees, to pentaerythritol triacrylatylate in four employees and to epoxy acrylate oligomers in three employees. Either cross-sensitization or concomitant sensitization may have accounted for the multiple reactions in several employees. One sensitized employee was patch tested with four different commercially available epoxy acrylate oligomers and reacted only to two, suggesting that variations possibly in chain length between these oligomers are important variables in the allergic reactions. The polyfunctional acrylic monomers and certain epoxy acrylate oligomers should be handled carefully to avoid the development of allergic contact dermatitis.

Resistance to tick-borne Francisella tularensis by tick-sensitized rabbits: allergic klendusity.

Mammals become hypersensitive to ticks that feed upon them. That hypersensitivity was thought responsible for an observation that a large number of Francisella tularensis-infected Dermacentor variabilis failed to infect a rabbit previously exposed to ticks of that species. In a series of tests of that hypothesis, rabbits sensitized to ticks were often significantly more resistant than control animals to tick-borne tularemia. The conditions that determine the klendusity are thought to be variable and complex but the phenomenon must be of importance in the epidemiology of some arthropod-borne agents.

Asthma problems in southern Italy: A statistical study of 2362 asthmatic patients.

In this report we have described the statistical results of a clinical study on 2362 asthmatic patients living mostly in the Naples area and observed in our Division of Respiratory Allergy from January 1976 to May 1978. All data have been analyzed by a computerized method using an Univac 1100 Computer. We have studied some aspects of the atopic syndrome in this population of Southern Italy: frequency of allergic sensitization according to endogenous and extrinsic factors (particularly Parietaria officinalis, a characteristic pollen of the Southern Italian Flora), etc. Finally we have presented the first results of our allergological investigation in Naples concerning the distribution of allergic sensitization according to air pollution of the patient's home.

Allergic contact sensitization to the fungicide Maneb.

Three cases of contact dermatitis caused by Maneb, manganous-ethylene-bis (dithiocarbamate), are described. Maneb is used as an agricultural fungicide, and is also used in spraying solutions in horticulture and in flower shops. Patch testing with Maneb-related compounds revealed no regular pattern of cross sensitization.

[Clinical and statistical study on the allergy of type 1 to mycetes (author's transl)].

From 1963 to 1977 the authors have examined 5700 patients; 11.5% of those positive to intradermal test were sensitive to Mold spores. 78 individuals showed allergic sensitivity exclusively to Mold spores; 89% were affected by bronchial asthma. Symptom onset was observed more frequently in subjects 30 to 50 years old. The authors intend to stress the important role played by the allergy to Mold spores in determining type 1 immunologic reactions.

Cysteinyl leukotrienes stimulate gut absorption of food allergens to promote anaphylaxis in mice.

Food-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) triggers life-threatening anaphylaxis; however, for unclear reasons, some people with food-specific IgE are asymptomatic upon allergen consumption. We studied strains of mice with different sensitivities to anaphylaxis when orally challenged with allergen to identify possible causes. In resistant C57BL/6 mice, intestinal goblet cells transported less food allergen than did anaphylaxis-susceptible strains, even before allergic sensitization. In a forward genetic screen, resistance was correlated with dipeptidase 1 (Dpep1) variants. DPEP1 is expressed in intestinal epithelium and catabolizes leukotriene D4 (LTD4). Blocking DPEP1 with cilastatin, deleting Dpep1, or administering LTD4 orally enhanced allergen transport in resistant mice. Conversely, pretreatment of susceptible mice with a synthesis inhibitor, zileuton, abrogated allergen absorption and oral anaphylaxis, indicating that this could be an approach to treating food allergy.

Contact dermatitis to homomenthyl salicylate.

Two patients with follicular dermatitis were found to have a contact sensitivity to homomenthyl salicylate, a sunscreening chemical present in a commercially available suntan lotion. One patient did not use the product, but her boyfriend did, and contact between the two individuals resulted in a follicular dermatitis developing in her. A second patient with contact dermatitis to homomenthyl salicylate also had a follicular eruption. Both patients appear to represent true allergic sensitivities.

Occupational dermatosis due to a soil fumigant.

D-D mixture is a preplant soil fumigant. It contains dichloropropanes and dichloropropenes, epichlorohydrin and is known as a primary irritant. Three cases of untoward reaction to D-D are reported. By patch testing, the existence of a contact allergic sensitivity to D-D could be proved in one patient. The other two cases reacted negatively; they were probably of a primary irritant origin. Patch tests with compounds related to D-D suggest that the cause of contact allergy must be sought in the propene(s) fraction of D-D. In future cases of untoward reactions to D-D, patch testing appears to be necessary in order to differentiate between a contact allergic and a primary irritant reaction.
