The use of test results from ASA workshops to evaluate workshop effectiveness.

Results of tests given to participants in six American Society of Anesthesiologists workshops were analyzed to detemine whether attendance at the workshops increased the participants' scores on sequential tests. Those who attended the workshops took the same test prior to, immediately after, and three months after the workshop. Two control groups of anesthesiologists took the tests in the same time sequence for comparison. Both workshop and control groups increased their scores with each successive test. In only one instance did those who attended the workshop improve their scores significantly more than did the control group. Because of difficulties inherent in designing valid and reliable tests, further development of the testing technique currently used at the workshops is necessary to make it a useful measure of workshop effectiveness.

[A report on the effect of sheltered workshop activities on the social living activity of the mentally ill--analysis of research on workshop clients].

The effect of sheltered workshop activities on the social living activity of the mentally ill was studied in order to evaluate the role and level of function of workshop activities as a self support and employment system for clients, and to determine the future tasks of the workshop and rehabilitative services in the community. The following results were observed: 1) Clients' social living ability appears to be poor, especially in questions related to personal relationships and time distribution, where less than 50% of the clients answered "Possible without assistance". This appears to be characteristics of the living behaviors of mentally ill individuals. 2) Most of the families of the clients evaluated the sheltered workshop activities positively in terms of increasing the clients' social living ability. 3) A survey of families showed that by utilizing the workshop much progress has been made toward improving those living behaviors which are easily made into habits and lifestyle pattern. On the other hand, personal relationships and living behaviors which require coping flexibility, are much more refactory. Based on those results, the future task of sheltered workshops and the supportive role of the public health center need to be examined further.

Canadian national workshop on measurement of sun-related behaviours [Workshop report].

The idea for the workshop described in this paper emerged from recommendations identified at the 1997 Workshop on Research, Policy and Program Planning on Sun Protective Behaviours. At the 1997 workshop, participants developed a set of recommendations for research initiatives related to sun protection efforts in Canada. One of the primary recommendations was to develop a standard set of definitions and core items to assess sun-related behaviours. In response, the authors of this paper agreed to co-chair the 1998 Canadian National Workshop on Measurement of Sun-Related Behaviours. The purpose of this workshop was to develop consensus on a standard set of measures for program evaluation and for monitoring of sun exposure and protective behaviours in Canada.

International expert workshop on the analysis of the economic and public health impacts of air pollution: workshop summary.

Forty-nine experts from 18 industrial and developing countries met on 6 September 2001 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, to discuss the economic and public health impacts of air pollution, particularly with respect to assessing the public health benefits from technologies and policies that reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Such measures would provide immediate public health benefits, such as reduced premature mortality and chronic morbidity, through improved local air quality. These mitigation strategies also allow long-term goals--for example, reducing the buildup of GHG emissions--to be achieved alongside short-term aims, such as immediate improvements in air quality, and therefore benefits to public health. The workshop aimed to foster research partnerships by improving collaboration and communication among various agencies and researchers; providing a forum for presentations by sponsoring agencies and researchers regarding research efforts and agency activities; identifying key issues, knowledge gaps, methodological shortcomings, and research needs; and recommending activities and initiatives for research, collaboration, and communication. This workshop summary briefly describes presentations made by workshop participants and the conclusions of three separate working groups: economics, benefits transfer, and policy; indoor air quality issues and susceptible populations; and development and transfer of dose-response relationships and exposure models in developing countries. Several common themes emerged from the working group sessions and subsequent discussion. Key recommendations include the need for improved communication and extended collaboration, guidance and support for researchers, advances in methods, and resource support for data collection, assessment, and research.

Report from the 1st International NOD Mouse T-Cell Workshop and the follow-up mini-workshop.

A workshop on autoreactive T-cell responses in NOD mice was held to optimize autoreactive T-cell detection methodologies. Using different proliferation assay protocols, 1 of the 11 participating laboratories detected spontaneous T-cell responses to GAD(524-543) and insulin(9-23) in their NOD mice. Two other laboratories were able to detect autoreactive responses when using enzyme-linked immunospot assay (ELISPOT) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) analysis of cytokines in culture supernatants, suggesting that these assays provided greater sensitivity. To address the divergent findings, a follow-up mini-workshop tested NOD mice from four different colonies side-by-side for T-cell proliferative responses to an expanded panel of autoantigens, using the protocol that had enabled detection of responses in the 1st International NOD Mouse T-Cell Workshop. Under these assay conditions, 16 of 16 NOD mice displayed proliferative responses to whole GAD65, 13 of 16 to GAD(524-543), 9 of 16 to GAD(217-236), 7 of 16 to insulin(9-23), and 5 of 16 to HSP277. Thus, spontaneous proliferative T-cell responses can be consistently detected to some beta-cell autoantigens and peptides thereof. Overall, the results suggest that more sensitive assays (e.g., ELISPOT, ELISA analysis of cytokines in supernatants, or tetramer staining) may be preferred for the detection of autoreactive T-cells.

[The quality of integration and care in workshops for the handicapped--The path to TQM in the workshops of the Gemeinschaftswerks fu"r Be- hinderte GmbH, Landstuhl].

Workshops for the Handicapped are exposed, as are other providers of social services, to powerful changes in social and economic conditions. Legal obligations (e.g. under the Federal Social Assistance Act BSHG), increasing customer demands and stronger competition make the ability to change a prerequisite, so that the quality and cost of providing services to the handicapped become a central theme. These changes in conditions have led the Gemeinschftswerk für Behinderte GmbH, Landstuhl, to intensively consider the themes Quality and Total Quality Management (TQM). The efforts to introduce TQM were concentrated initially on the DIN EN ISO 9000 certification of the production processes in the workshops. Currently, the themes of Integration and Care were examined. After the central processes had been identified the performance descriptions of system, structure, process, result, and steering committee were extended by process diagrams and responsibility matrixes. This paper describes the path that workshops of the Gemeinschaftswerk für Behinderte GmbH have taken towards TQM, with emphasis on presentation of the themes regarding quality of Integration and Care.

[Patients with severe multiple handicaps in workshops for the handicapped--a project of the Berlin Workshops for the Handicapped GmbH (BWB) 4 December 1989 to 31 May 1990].

A project had been carried out at Berliner Werkstätten für Behinderte GmbH (BWB) aimed at integrating cerebral palsied persons with very severe, multiple disability in a workshop for the disabled. Client workshop readiness had been determined on the criteria of social capacity, extraordinary care need at the workplace, and economic viability of work. The project, planned to last 6 months, had to be discontinued because the 9 disabled persons included in this programme refused to cooperate after a short period of time.

Report on the 1997 International Society of Blood Transfusion Workshop for Genotyping of Platelet Alloantigens. Platelet and Granulocyte Workshop ISBT.

The results from the 1997 International human platelet antigen- (HPA-) genotyping workshop are reported. Seventeen institutions participated to genotype for HPA polymorphisms of seven DNA samples. Most investigators used the polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and PCR-sequence specific priming (SSP). A few participants applied both methods to confirm their results. All participants reported results for HPA-1, -2, -3 and -5 allotyping, while HPA-4 was determined in 12 and HPA-6 in nine laboratories, respectively. For HPA-1 to -6 there were 19 deviations from the consensus result. These deviations were not associated with any particular technique or allotype. Most frequently, however, deviation were reported for HPA-5 typing. These results were discussed at a meeting at the Joint Congress of the ISBT and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Transfusionsmedizin und Immunhämatologie in Frankfurt, Germany, in September 1997. Based on the results and the comments, further workshops for HPA-allotyping are mandatory for quality assurance.

National Institutes of Health workshop summary. Summary and recommendations of a workshop on the investigative use of fiberoptic bronchoscopy and bronchoalveolar lavage in individuals with asthma.

The participants in the workshop reached unanimous consensus that, as an investigative tool, BAL has enormous potential for extending knowledge of the immunopathogenesis of asthma. When BAL is used according to these guidelines, maximum knowledge may be gained with minimal risks to study subjects. However, we wish to emphasize that the extent to which the safety of the procedure applies to those subjects with asthma and more symptoms and an FEV1 of less than 60% of predicted value remains to be established by carefully controlled clinical investigations.

Summary of workshop findings for antibodies reacting with porcine T-cells and activation antigens: results from the Second International Swine CD Workshop.

After initial evaluation of the 176 new and 19 control monoclonal antibodies (mAb) submitted to the Second International Swine CD Workshop, 57 were assigned to the T-cell/activation marker subgroup. These 57 mAb were further analyzed using flow cytometry on whole blood lymphocytes, splenocytes, Peyer's patch lymphocytes, in vitro cell lines, broncho-alveolar lavage cells, Con A and PHA blasts, fetal cell populations, and by 2-color flow cytometry against mAb to porcine CD2, CD4, and CD8. Finally, the molecular weights of the target antigens were characterized when possible. As a result of these analyses, 23 mAb were distributed into 7 CD clusters. Newly confirmed mAb assignments included: two CD2; one CD4; two CD5; one wCD6; and one wCD25. Three new mAb were found that reacted with wCD8, one of which defined a new epitope, wCD8c. For the first time, mAb against porcine CD3 were identified, including 6 mAb that reacted with three different epitopes. Several new mAb reacted with antigens whose expression varied depending on the activation state of the test cell. These will require further characterization in order to assign a CD number.
