Evaluation of audiovisual teaching material in family practice: a report of review activities, 1977--1978.

Audiovisual teaching materials have found increasing use in medical education in recent years, and a large number of excellent materials have been produced. The plethora of existing audiovisual teaching programs has made it difficult for educators and potential users to be aware of what is available and to select programs relevant to specific learning needs. The Audiovisual Review Committee has functioned over the last five years as a subcommittee of the Education Committee of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. This paper describes the experience of this group over the last two years and presents a complete listing of audiovisual teaching materials which have been reviewed and appraised during that period.

Evaluation of audiovisual teaching materials in family practice: a report of review activities 1974-1976.

Recent years have seen increasing interest in the use of audiovisual teaching materials throughout medical education. There is good evidence that different individuals learn best in different ways according to their particular learning styles, personalities, and learning needs. Audiovisual materials can provide flexible approaches to meet varied learning needs and facilitate self-instruction. In the past, there has been no systematic method of identification and evaluation of audiovisual teaching materials relevant to family practice. This paper describes the experience of a review process which was initiated three years ago. A complete list is presented of audiovisual teaching materials which have been reviewed for family practice and future directions of the review process are discussed.

Evaluation of instructional materials for teaching psychomotor skills.

An investigation was conducted to determine the effectiveness of self-instructional materials for a cavity preparation procedure using two types of dental auxiliaries under assisted and unassisted instructional conditions. Results showed significant pretest to posttest performance gains, with the instruction proving equally effective across both types of auxiliaries and instructional conditions.

The preparation, use, and evaluation of recorded material for teaching ultrasonics in a university Master of Science course in medical physics.

The potential value of using recorded instructional material in a university Master's course module in medical ultrasonics is discussed. The procedure for preparation and evaluation of a program of slides with synchronized audio tape is reported. The evaluation indicates that the flexibility of this form of recorded material can make several unique contributions to the teaching program, in acquainting students with clinical problems, in simulating expensive equipment, and encouraging students to use the literature.

[Activation of student cognitive activities in the process of teaching medical microbiology].

The main trends of methodical work conducted at the chair of microbiology of Orenburng Medical Institute are presented. For the purpose of activation of cognition activity of students during medical microbiology teaching the following methods were applied: presentation of the teaching material, creation of visual teaching methods in a single methodical plan in accordance with the logic structure graphs of the subject as a whole, its individual sections and themes; introduction of problem teaching method, solution of practical tasks of the II and III learning level; introduction of scientific achievements of the chair into the teaching process. Result of evaluation of the efficacy of the teaching-methodical work of the chair carried out demonstrated that knowledge of the principal microbiology problems in the students and interns persisted for long periods of time.
