Are textile formaldehyde regulations reasonable? Experiences from the Finnish textile and clothing industries.

The formaldehyde content of textiles has been legally limited in only a few countries. Finland followed Japan in 1987 and introduced strict limits for textile formaldehyde content. The comprehensive registration system of occupational diseases in Finland has enabled the study of the incidence of occupational diseases caused by formaldehyde among workers in the textile and clothing industries. Diagnosed occupational diseases caused by formaldehyde were relatively rare in 1975-1993, and no decrease in the incidence of occupational formaldehyde diseases were observed after regulations were implemented at the end of 1987. Limitations on textile formaldehyde content are needed, however, because textiles with formaldehyde content of 435-855 micrograms/g can cause irritating airborne concentrations during pressing in clothing industry. With modern low formaldehyde cross-linking agents it is possible to achieve textile formaldehyde content less than 100 micrograms/g, as determined by the Japanese acetylacetone method. When limits for textile formaldehyde content are considered, it is also important to define the test method because the existing procedures produce different results.

Blood compatibility of venous prosthesis made of textile or non-textile material.

To study blood compatibility of venous prosthesis made of textile or non-textile material, the inferior vena cava of 37 rabbits was partly replaced by 3 mm internal diameter synthetic tube graft made of textile material (T: woven tetron) or non-textile material (P: polytetrafluoroethylene). At designated time intervals after the replacement (5 hours to 4 weeks), graft patency was examined and the dry weight of intraluminal deposits was measured. The harvested grafts were then subjected to light and scanning electron microscopy. All the T-grafts were occluded as early as 5 hours after grafting but when ticlopidine was administered prior to the grafting, all the grafts were patent. All the P-grafts were patent up to 4 weeks after grafting, though the amount of intraluminal deposits was increased in a time related manner, narrowing the lumen of the grafts. The luminal surface of the P-grafts harvested at 5 hours after grafting was covered by piles of fibrin networks entrapping erythrocytes without an association of platelet aggregates, which resembles the finding in the T-grafts harvested from the ticlopidine treated rabbits. In the P-grafts, both the proximal and distal luminal surfaces near the anastomosis were fully covered with endothelial cells by 2 weeks and the entire luminal surface was covered with these cells by 4 weeks. From these results, the following conclusions were obtained; (1) P-graft was superior to T-graft for venous prosthesis, which is mainly due to the inertness of P against platelet activation. (2) Though the luminal surface of the P-grafts was completely covered with endothelial cells by 4 weeks after grafting, the lumen was markedly narrowed by intimal hyperplasia.

Oxidative treatment characteristics of biotreated textile-dyeing wastewater and chemical agents used in a textile-dyeing process by advanced oxidation process.

The oxidative treatment characteristics of biotreated textile-dyeing wastewater and typical chemicals such as desizing, scouring, dispersing and swelling agents used in the textile-dyeing process by advanced oxidation process were experimentally studied. The refractory organic matters remained in the effluent of biological treatment process without degradation may be suitable for the improvement of biodegradability and mineralized to CO2 by combined ozonation with and without hydrogen peroxide. On the other hand, the refractory chemicals contained in the scouring agent A and swelling agent may not be mineralized and their biodegradability may not be improved by ozonation. However, the BOD/DOC ratio of scouring agent B increased from 0.3 to 0.45 after ozonation. Based on the results described above, advanced treatment process involving the ozonation without and with the addition of hydrogen peroxide, followed by biological treatment was proposed for the treatment of refractory wastewater discharged from the textile-dyeing process.

[Textile pest control in textile stores with a combination preparation of methoxycholor and chlorpyrifos [0,0-diethyl-(3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridyl)-monothiophosphate]].

The effect on man of a mixture of methoxyclorine and 0,0-diethyl-(o8k8l-trichloro-2-pyridyl)-monothiophosphate (chlorpyrifos) used for textile pest control in poorly ventilated textile storages were examined under realistic test conditions. The chronical exposure of the test persons to chlorpyrifos, although originally thought to be of a negligible order, surprisingly resulted in an approximately 40% inhibition of the serum chlinesterase (ChE) without any significant spontaneous recovery of the ChE activity in three out of four test subjects during the test period. On the contrary, the activity of the acetylcholinesterase of the erythrocytes (AChE), after a temporary insignificant decrease, was found to be considerable increased for the duration of the test. As a result of these examinations it is recommended not to use insecticides containing alkylphosphates for textile pest control in poorly ventilated reeom if an exposure of man during the desorption phase cannot be excluded.

Decolorization and removal of textile and non-textile dyes from polluted wastewater and dyeing effluent by using potato (Solanum tuberosum) soluble and immobilized polyphenol oxidase.

Celite bound potato polyphenol oxidase preparation was employed for the treatment of wastewater/dye effluent contaminated with reactive textile and non-textile dyes, Reactive Blue 4 and Reactive Orange 86. The maximum decolorization was found at pH 3.0 and 4.0 in case of Reactive Blue 4 and Reactive Orange 86, respectively. Immobilized potato polyphenol oxidase was significantly more effective in decolorizing the individual dye and complex mixtures of dyes as compared to soluble enzyme. The absorption spectra of the treated and untreated dye mixture and dyeing effluent exhibited a marked difference in the absorption value at various wavelengths. The polluted water contaminated with an individual dye or mixtures of dyes treated with soluble and immobilized potato polyphenol oxidase resulted in the remarkable loss in total organic carbon.

Removal of textile dyes from textile dye effluent using TBAB based aqueous biphasic systems.

Aqueous biphasic systems (ABS) are useful for the extraction of dye molecules from aqueous solution. Thus, they can be used in textile dye bath effluent treatment. The partitioning behavior of two commercially used textile dyes-Cibacron Scarlet LS 2G and Astacryl Red 3B were investigated in a TBAB-salt aqueous biphasic systems. It was found that all three salts, namely sodium chloride, sodium sulphate and sodium carbonate, investigated caused partitioning of dye into the upper TBAB rich phase. The efficiency of separation increased in the order NaCl < Na2SO4 < Na2CO. It was found that the cationic dye partitioned better than the anionic dye in the system. A concentration of 5 g/l of dye was extracted into the upper layer. Alteration of solution pH did not cause any significant difference in distribution ratios. Studies were extended to actual dye bath effluent and small scale up studies carried out. Efficiencies of removal obtained in all cases were extremely good with maximum efficiencies above 98 %.

Outbreak of organising pneumonia in textile printing sprayers. Collaborative Group for the Study of Toxicity in Textile Aerographic Factories.

Eight textile printing factories in Valencia, Spain, with a total workforce of 257 using spraying techniques were investigated as a result of severe interstitial lung disease occurring in three employees, one of whom died. Clinical and radiological data together with biopsy specimens from 71 (27.6%) workers with abnormal respiratory features indicated the occurrence of an outbreak of organising pneumonia resulting in 6 deaths. Epidemiological analysis included the 22 workers who fulfilled the radiological case definition based on chest radiograph and computed tomographic scan showing widespread nodular opacities or confluent patchy consolidation with a lung biopsy corresponding to organising pneumonia. The overall attack rate was 8.9%. Only 2 of the 22 cases never worked in factories A or B. Those who had only worked in factory A had the highest risk of being a case (RR = 24.3; 95% CI = 5.7-104.4). The relationship of case status to period of employment suggested an abrupt change in exposure conditions in the period when Acramin FWR was substituted by Acramin FWN. Although the precise toxicological mechanism is unknown, it is proposed that the lung disease was caused by spraying procedures delivered a respirable aerosol of Acramin FWN to distal airways and pulmonary parenchyma.

Isolation and identification of gram negative bacteria from raw baled cotton and synthetic textile fibers with special reference to environmental GNB and endotoxin concentrations of textile mill.

The objective of this study was to examine the gram-negative bacterial (GNB) content of Indian raw baled cotton fibers and to compare with the U.S. cottons. Airborne endotoxin also was estimated in the different work places of the mill. On comparison with data on U.S. cottons, GNB content was found to be as high as in U.S. cottons. Moreover, endotoxin concentration of cardroom dust from an Indian cotton mill was found to be significantly (P less than 0.01) higher than in the research laboratory of the same cotton mill as well as in the cardroom of a synthetic mill.
