Self-esteem is a key feature in a person's perception of their own worth. This report is of a study of the reported self-esteem levels of two groups of student nurses: one in Thailand and one in the UK. Purposive samples of 120 Thai students and 101 UK undergraduate nursing students were given the Culture-Free Self-Esteem Inventory (CFSEI-2). The CFSEI-2 is a self-reported inventory, which measures an individual's perception of self. The findings of the study indicate that the perceptions of own self-esteem in undergraduate student nurses in the UK and in Thailand were comparable to the normal ranges of self-esteem as assessed by the instrument. An independent sample t-test revealed that there were no significant differences in mean overall and subscale self-esteem scores between UK and Thai nursing students. There were no indications of differences in levels of self-esteem for UK and Thai nursing students experiencing different parts of their training.
This paper addresses a collaborative preceptorship program involving a group of undergraduate nursing students, their registered nurse preceptors employed on the paediatric ward of an acute care hospital, and academic staff from a university school of nursing. The project utilised a fourth generation evaluation model, adapted from action research methods, which comprised a series of parallel focussed group discussions with a registered nurse preceptor group and a student nurse group. During the project, members of the two groups explored the issues around the supervision of students in practice in an acute paediatric context. This resulted in the development of innovative approaches to the supervisory practices utilised by preceptors. It also highlighted the benefits of collaboration between universities and hospital staff in developing preceptorship programs which respond appropriately to the needs of both preceptors and students.
A diagnostic test was used to assess the mathematical knowledge and skills in 545 experienced nurses and 197 student nurses. The main purpose of this study was to investigate if student nurses and registered nurses have adequate knowledge and skills in drug dosage calculation. Nine out of fourteen test items were solved accurately and no differences were found in the average performance between the two groups. To evaluate physicians' knowledge about statutory regulations on drug prescription and legal responsibility, 36 physicians from different health care areas answered a questionnaire. The answers revealed that the majority was not familiar with these regulations. The results are discussed in relation to nurse education and the physicians' legal responsibility in connection with drug administration and prescription.

Nursing students need to have a sense of being cared for in order to nurture their own ability to care for others. This phenomenologic study explored the meaning of caring among nursing students. Fifty-three nursing students were asked to describe a situation in which they had experienced caring from another nursing student. Their written descriptions were analyzed using Van Kaam's phenomenologic method. Four necessary constituents of a caring experience among nursing students emerged: Authentic presencing, selfless sharing, fortifying support, and enriching effects. The enriching effects of caring experiences among nursing students that were revealed support the author's stance that, along with faculty, nursing students can also be role models for caring.
Nurse educators have identified that historically nurses have not been prepared to care for dying patients. Research also has identified that nursing students have anxieties about death, dying, and caring for dying patients. Several factors have been identified as affecting nurses' and nursing students' attitudes toward care of the dying. Factors addressed in this research were current and previous death education. This research incorporated experiential learning using a model of death education and transformative learning theory. The educational experiences were geared to help students understand the skills needed to care competently and compassionately for the dying. The use of the End of Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) education package along with experiences at the hospice, the funeral home, the anatomy laboratory, and role play helped facilitate transformative learning in the nursing students. The study examined the effects of an educational experience to determine if a one-time educational experience provides sufficient, lasting effects in a 6-week format. Results of this study indicate that education can have a positive effect on nursing students' attitudes toward care of the dying. Nursing students in the intervention group had a significant positive increase in their attitudes toward care of the dying after the intervention. The attitude change increased slightly after a 4-week period.
