At a time when outbreaks and sporadic cases of influenza caused a A/Victoria/3/75-like and A/Texas/1/77-like H3N2 strain of influenza were occurring in the Rocky Mountain region of the USA, about 60% of the students of a high school in Cheyenne, Wyoming, were involved in an outbreak of influenza-like illness. Six influenza A(H1N1) virus isolates were obtained from throat swabs collected from 12 of these students. Virus isolated from a seventh student, however, contained a mixture of H1 and H3 (A/Victoria/3/75-like) hemagglutinins and N1 and N2 neuraminidases, as shown by the ability to clone from the mixture viruses with antigenic components H1N1, H3N1, and H3N2. An antigenic hybrid virus with H3N1 composition was re-isolated from the original throat swab. The results show that one student was shedding a mixture of A/Victoria/3/75(H3N2)-like and A/USSR/90/77(H1N1)-like viruses at the time his throat swab was taken.
The nutritional habits of 38 randomly selected single aged people with free choice of food have been investigated by the precise weighing method. Blood serum levels of the vitamins A, C, and E and of beta-carotene and biotin were analyzed, and the nutritional status with respect to the vitamins B1, B2, and B6 was examined by the transketolase-test, the glutathione-reductase-test, and the glutamic-acid-oxalo-acetic-transaminase-test. In relation to the desirable daily supply of nutrients and other dietary components the food was deficient in the vitamins B1, and B6 and in magnesium. For women an additional calcium-deficiency was demonstrated. The dietary fat content, however, was found to be high (44% of total calorie intake). The results of the blood analyses suggest an insufficient dietary supply of vitamin B1, partly also of the vitamins B6 and C. The total caloric intake was found to be rather low with respect to the age.

A review of the literature relating to multiple personality is presented together with a study of a single case of hysterical aetiology that demonstrates the development of multiple personality from a fugue amnesic state. A re-examination of this case after 15 years without significant psychotherapeutic intervention demonstrates a tendency towards remission. The view that multiple personality is a form of fugue, not necessarily hysterical, in which an alternative personality is adopted and that this behaviour is reinforced by the attention that it receives, is discussed.
Patients over 15 years of age from Turku hospitalized for psychosis for the first time during the years 1949-50, 1959-60 or 1969-70 were investigated. The incidence of hospitalized psychoses (per 100,000 inhabitants) was 115, 136 and 160, respectively. The increase in incidence was greater in women than in men. The incidence remained approximately the same in patients aged 30 to 59, but increased in the younger and older groups. The incidence of functional psychoses increased; in schizophrenia, however, it declined, while in paranoid and effective psychoses it increased. In organic psychoses, the admission frequency of psychoses of old age rose in the 1950's, but declined in some measure in the 1960's. The incidence of psychosis increased for single persons. The ratio of the incidence between single and married persons rose in men, whereas in women it fell. This was particularly pronounced in schizophrenics. The incidence of psychosis was highest in unskilled laborers. The overrepresentation of schizophrenia and paranoid psychoses seemed to have become more pronounced in this occupational group.
This study demonstrates the ability of an automated blood gas analyzer (Radiometer ABL 330) operated at atmospheric pressure to measure the arterial oxygen tension (PaO2) of ten healthy volunteers exposed to hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) up to 3.0 atmospheres absolute. Arterial blood samples were aspirated from subjects compressed in a single-person hyperbaric chamber and were analyzed immediately in the blood gas analyzer. The subjects' values for PaO2 correlated with the calculated alveolar O2 tension (PAO2) (measured PaO2 = 0.827 x PAO2-15.1) (r2 = 0.97). Tonometric experiments indicated a difference between saline and blood PO2 measurements. We therefore derived a correction factor for blood measurements (corrected PaO2 = 0.908 x PAO2-52.4) (r2 = 0.98). These results compared favorably with PaO2 measurements made with blood gas analyzers calibrated inside walk-in hyperbaric chambers. We conclude that the PaO2 of normal subjects exposed to HBO2 can be measured accurately at atmospheric pressure with this automated blood gas analyzer. Prior to this study, hyperbaric PaO2 measurements could only be performed within walk-in chambers. Our observations generalize the normobaric measurement of hyperbaric PaO2 to patients treated in single-person and walk-in chambers.
A group of 142 obese subjects was seen in an obesity clinic over a 2-year period. Of these, 116 had assessment of personality factors by the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), and 71 were followed for periods of 4 to 28 months in order to determine success at weight reduction by means of a conventional dietary regimen. The MMPI profiles of the obese subjects were compared to those of a general medical population of 50,000 patients seen in the Department of Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic. Obese male subjects had significantly higher scores on the F and MA scales. Obese female subjects had significantly higher scores on the F, PD, PA, SC, and MA scales, and a significantly lower score on the Q scale than the reference population. Even though these findings show that certain personality traits as measured by the MMPI may occur more frequently in obese persons, the individual MMPI profile codes point out the presence of diverse behavior patterns among obese persons rather than a single personality pattern characteristic of obesity. There were no apparent differences in the success in achieving a loss of 10% or more of initial weight among the male and female obese subjects having normal or abnormal MMPI profiles. Obese subjects having onset of obesity before age 12 years were slightly more successful in weight reduction than those whose obesity began later than this, but the differences were not statistically significant for either the male or female subjects.
Comparative analyses based on aggregate data have shown that the percentage of older women living alone has risen dramatically during recent decades, a pattern repeated in many European and North American countries. This article investigates the correlates of the decision to live alone, using individual-level data from five countries and a parallel analytic approach. The major categories of factors analyzed here are kin availability, financial resources, and disability and health status. Several common patterns of findings emerge for the group of countries considered: Larger kin networks and the presence of severe disabilities reduce the probability of living alone, whereas higher income increases the probability of living alone. Despite these similarities in individual-level correlates, there remain some differences across countries in the levels of single-person households, and these might be attributable to macrolevel forces such as housing and social welfare policies.
The structure, properties and function of, and some biosynthetic and genetic aspects of, Hb A2 are described. The structural variants of Hb A2 are reviewed and their geographical distribution presented. Hb A2, Hb A2-Flatbush and Hb A2-Babinga are characteristic of negro populations and may have originated in Western or Central Africa. Hb A2-Sphakia is characteristic of Canadian Amerindian and Hb A2-Indonesia of Indonesian/Malay populations. Hb A2-NYU has only been found sporadically and most frequently in persons of Eastern European origin. The other three variants of Hb A2 have only been reported in a single person or in single families. Some conditions which are associated with changes in Hb A2 levels are reviewed.
This article examines recent changes in the structure of American households within the context of broad population changes. Decreases in married-couple households and increases in single-parent households are almost entirely due to the changing patterns of marriage, divorce, fertility, and child custody; headship rates for families have remained relatively stable. Increases in single-person and other nonfamily households are due to increases in the size of the unmarried, childless population and to the aging of this population. Increasing propensities to live alone or with nonrelatives were observed between 1970 and 1980, but these behavioral changes have abated during the early 1980s.
Two self-rating depression scales, the Depression Factor Score derived from the SCL-90 and the Geriatric Depression Scale were administered to 220 medical geriatric in-patients, and two psychiatrists, after a clinical interview, made a diagnosis according to the DSM-III criteria for affective disorders. Eighteen patients were found to be affected by major depression, 49 by dysthymic disorder, 14 by atypical depression and 13 by an adjustment disorder with depressive mood. Women and single persons proved to be significantly more affected by depressive disturbances. The performance of both scales was good, so that they seem to be useful instruments aiding the non-specialist physician in a rapid screening procedure for the identification of depression in elderly patients with medical problems.
Data were collected on the nutrient intake and nutritional status of 96 single mothers and their 192 dependent children who had been displaced from their homes. The objective of the study was to provide information on the dietary adequacy of a newly identified subgroup of homeless persons, single women and their dependent children. Once situated in temporary housing, those participating in the study indicated that they believed that they were receiving sufficient food. However, a nutrient analysis found that the study subjects in all age groups were consuming less than 50 percent of the 1989 Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) for iron, magnesium, zinc, and folic acid. Adults were consuming less than 50 percent of the RDA for calcium. The type and amounts of fats consumed were in higher than desirable quantities for a significant number of subjects of all ages. The health risk factors of iron deficiency anemia, obesity, and hypercholesterolemia were prevalent. The findings indicate a need to examine and remedy nutrient intake deficiencies among single women who are heads of household and their dependent children in temporary housing situations. Diet-related conditions found included low nutrient intakes that may affect child growth and development, risk factors associated with chronic disease, and lack of appropriate foods and knowledge of food preparation methods in shelter situations. Applicable, understandable nutrition education should be offered mothers in shelter situations to help them make food choices at the shelter and when they become self-sufficient. Assistance programs such as the Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants, and Children, and food stamps, should be available to this group.
The ATTTT repeat polymorphism located approximately 1,400 base pairs (bp) upstream from the beta-globin structural gene was analyzed by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of RNA:DNA duplexes. A study of 81 unrelated Japanese from Hiroshima revealed a sequence heteromorphism in this site. The alleles with five and six repeats of the ATTTT unit, which have been reported, were found in polymorphic proportions. Two unreported alleles were also detected, the first, in two persons, characterized by seven repeats and the other, in a single person, having an A-to-G nucleotide substitution in the fifth repeat.
Studies of several overweight persons conducted before their undergoing antiobesity surgery have shown 1) that there is no single personality type that characterizes the severely obese; 2) that this population does not report greater levels of general psychopathology than do average-weight control subjects; and 3) that the complications specific to severe obesity include body image disparagement and binge eating. Studies conducted after surgical treatment and weight loss have shown 1) that self-esteem and positive emotions increase; 2) that body image disparagement decreases; 3) that marital satisfaction increases, but only if a measure of satisfaction existed before surgery; and 4) that eating behavior is improved dramatically. The results of surgical treatment are superior to those for dietary treatment alone. Practitioners should be aware that severely obese persons are subjected to prejudice and discrimination and should be treated with an extra measure of compassion and concern to help alleviate their feelings of rejection and shame.
In an attempt to analyze the relatively neglected relationship between the presence of dependent children and suicide of married parents, the suicides of both married and single persons in the Chicago-Cook County region for 1970 and 1974 were examined. Single suicides and married suicides with dependent children were compared to similar groups in the general population. It was found that while marrieds with dependent children experienced the lowest average suicide rate, they also had a larger mean number of children than the population as a whole and exhibited a tendency for having children at a very young age or children at an older age in life. These findings contradict contemporary notions that an increasing number of children in a marriage tend to inhibit suicide potential. It appears that the relationship between marital suicide and dependent children is far more complex than previously indicated and requires further research for elaboration.
