Mitochondrial DNA polymorphism in Russians from west Siberia.

The mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) of 60 Russians from West Siberia was analyzed with the following restriction enzymes: BamHI, HindIII, PstI, PvuII and SacI that recognize 6 bp. The observed restriction fragment length polymorphisms (morphs) were classified into 13 types of distinct cleavage patterns (mitotypes). The distributions of the mtDNA morphs were compared with those characteristic of some other human populations.

[Genetic polymorphism of the serum transferrins of the northern reindeer (Rangifer tarandus L.) of northwestern Siberia].

On the basis of the examination of random samples of seven populations of reindeer inhabiting the Montane-Taiga Zone and of nine population inhabiting the Tundra Zone of the Magadan Region 8 alleles of transferrin locus described earlier (TfA, TfC, TfE, TfG, TfH, TfJ, TfK and TfM) were identified and the ninth hitherto unknown allele (TfN) was discovered. Gene concentrations of all these alleles in populations studies were determined. The reindeer of the North-East of Siberia differ in frequencies of Tf alleles from those of Norway and, apparently, also from the reindeer inhabiting the northern regions of the European part of the USSR and from the American caribou. The allele TfK is possibly associated with the resistance of reindeer to necrobacteriosis.

[Dynamics of drug resistance of Vibrio cholerae isolated from surface water reservoirs in Siberia and the Soviet Far East in 1976-1990].

In the study on antibiotic resistance 1383 strains of El Tor Vibrio cholerae isolated from surface water reservoirs in 12 administrative territories of the Siberia and Far East within a period of 15 years were tested. The following antibiotics were used: ampicillin, streptomycin, monomycin, polymyxin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, rifampicin and nalidixic acid. The resistance was unstable and its pattern was wave-like according to annual changes in the biological cycle. It was especially evident in regard to ampicillin, streptomycin, monomycin and polymyxin. The highest numbers of the strains were resistant to polymyxin, ampicillin and streptomycin (up to 100 per cent in some years). The lowest numbers of the strains were resistant to chloramphenicol (0.4 per cent) and tetracycline (1.9 per cent). No strains resistant to rifampicin and nalidixic acid were isolated. In some cases the antibiotic resistance level depended on the geographical zone where the strain was isolated. A direct quantitative dependence of the resistance level on the MIC was observed: the lower the MIC of the drug was, the lower the number of the strains resistant to it was. Within the 15-year period there was no general tendency to increase the resistance in V. cholerae to the antibiotics used.

[Distribution of thermophilic sulfate reducing bacteria in the oil-bearing strata of Apsheron and Western Siberia].

Enrichment cultures of sulfate-reducing bacteria were obtained by inoculating the water of high-temperature gas and oil-bearing strata. A study of the morphology of these cells has shown that the thermophilic bacterium Desulfovibrio thermophilus occurs in the deposits of the Apsheron Peninsula while Desulfootomaculum nigrificans is found in the deposits of West Siberia. The former organism is involved in the accumulation of H2S in the Apsheron strata. The temperature of the strata is believed to be the factor which regulates the incidence of bacteria.

[Regional epidemiologic characteristics of combined foci of tick-borne encephalitis, endemic rickettsioses and leptospirosis in Western Siberia].

The authors carried out complex study of combined foci of infections with natural foci in Western Siberia and their reflection in human pathology. The results of serological examination of 5917 persons and of 1743 of farm animals in respect to tick-borne encephalitis, Asian tick-borne rickettsiosis, Q-rickettsiosis, and leptospiroses are analysed. Affection of the population with all the four infections in all the landscape zones under study was shown; the intensity of this affection with different infections differed. Combined natural foci of the mentioned infections were found to be widespread; epidemiological significance of such combination was unequal in different ladscapes, this depending on the ladscape characteristics of the natural foci of infections under study and of different ways of transmission of their causative agents.

[Species affiliation of metacercaria of the genus Metorchis (Trematoda, Opisthorchidae) from fishes in Western Siberia].

Two larval species of the genus Metorchis, M. bilis and M. xanthosomus, are reported from fishes of West Siberia. Larvae of the first species can develop into adult forms in birds (terns, gulls, ducks) and in mammals (cats, golden hamsters, white mice). Larvae of the second species developed only in ducks. Experimental infection of golden hamsters, white mice and black terns with M. xanthosomus failed. On the results of the experimental infection and literary data the synonyms, M. bilis and M. xanthosomus, are given.

Distribution of hereditary variants of haptoglobin and transferrin in several human populations in Siberia.

Haptoglobins and transferrins have been studied in nganasans from Taymir peninsula, in chelkantsi and kumandintsi from Altai and in 500 Russian inhabitants of Novosibirsk. Frequencies of Hp2 and TfB0-1 alleles in nganasams have been found to be the highest in the region. Transferrin polymorphism in the sample from Novosibirsk population seems to be maintained at the expense of four common alleles (C;B2;B0-1; DChi), in nganasans -- tow alleles (C and B0-1). No polymorphism has been observed in chelkantsi and kumandintsi. No rare transferrin variant has been found in the samples studied except homozygous B0-1 B0-1 in a child from nganasan family.

[Experience in the study of the epidemiology and prevention of intestinal infections under conditions of the extreme north of western Siberia].

A study was made of peculiarities of typhoid and dysentery and of conditions promoting the spread of these infections in the Yamalo-Nenetsk National Area. The efficacy of antiepidemic measures conducted against these infections under conditions of the extreme north was assessed. A sharp fall of typhoid incidence was reached. As to dysentery-the complex of measures carried out could not significantly influence the direction of the epidemic process (for this purpose elaboration of special prophylactic measures is required).

[New findings concerning the spread of natural foci of infection in the transpolar region of eastern Siberia].

New materials are presented on the presence of the foci of anthropozoonozes in the Extreme North. For the first time there was established the existence in the subarctic tundra of the Taimyr peninsula of the arbovirus foci of the tick-borne encephalitis complex. A virus of the tick-borne encephalitis complex was isolated in 1973 from the gamasida ticks Haemogamasus ambulans Thorel. and Hirstionyssus isabellinus Oudms. and the nests of the Siberian lemming Lemmus lemmus L. This pointed to the existence in the Transpolar region of the foci or arboviruses in the nest-hole biocenoses of the lemmings outside the bird colonies. Cultures of tularemia bacilli (which proved the etiology of the epizootic among the lemmings observed in 1973 and also the presence of the lemming natural foci of tularemia and their combination with the arbovirus foci) were isolated from the lemmings at the same territory. The results of serological examination of the local population and of the animals pointed to the circulation in the Transpolar region of the causative agents of leptospirosis, toxoplasmosis, Q-fever and of the Asian tick-borne rickettsiosis.

[The organization and efficacy of the hospital treatment of patients with newly detected pulmonary tuberculosis in Siberia].

Analysis of the clinical observations of 2049 patients with newly diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis has demonstrated that 54.3% of them had the destructive phase, 52.2% bacilli excretion, 20.7% the neglected forms, and 64.3% attendant diseases. The absence of bacilli was found in 82% of the patients with the destructive forms (in 5 months' period after hospitalization), and elimination of caverns in 74.5%. The most serious defects were found in the organization of a diagnostic and therapeutic process. The complex of measures has been suggested to promote heightening of treatment effectiveness in newly detected patients at the hospital stage.
