The causes of bedsores and their complications are described, along with the preventive and surgical, medical and physiotherapeutic measures used in their treatment. Personal experience with an association of drugs and physiotherapy in 21 cases is reported and the modalities employed are described in detail. The advantages offered by the association in the way of simplicity and satisfacory results are explained.

The results of treatment with short-wave diathermy were compared with those achieved by short-wave diathermy combined with back extension or lumbar isometric flexion exercises in 43 patients with back pain. Subjects were relatively young and normally engaged in sporting activities. Marginally more patients improved amongst those receiving extension exercises. Significant reduction of pain and increase of spinal flexion occurred with each treatment and the periods taken to resume work or sport were similar in each group. Neither exercise regime appeared to have a major influence on recovery. Isometric flexion exercises did not seem to be more beneficial for those with a prominent lumbar lordosis.

The effects of 2 pulsating shortwave diathermy treatments (Diapulse and Curapuls) were compared with placebo treatment in recent ligamentous injuries of ankle and foot in 300 outpatients. The areas of comparison were reduction in swelling, recovery of strength and range of motion of the injured ankle, improvement of walking ability, and duration of disability. There were only slight differences between Diapulse and Curapuls treatment groups. No statistically significant differences could be observed in the recovery of strength and range of motion or in the duration of disability among the 3 groups, although walking ability in the Diapulse group recovered better than in the placebos (p less than 0.01) and reduction of swelling was significantly better for Curapuls (p less than 0.001 than for placebos.

The release of substances from the Zaidela ascitic hepatoma cells after irradiation with physiological doses of short-wave (254 nm) and long-wave (300-380 nm) UV light (far and near UV light) has been studied spectrophotometrically. Within the range of 200-520 nm, the absorption spectra of releasing substances show maxima at 215 and 260 nm and are identical to spectra of non-irradiated cells. The amount of substances increases with dose making up, at the maximal alteration, 180-220%, of the amount releasing from non-irradiated cells. Irradiation with far UV light exceeds by one order that with near UV light. The effect of minimum doses is opposite to the action of high doses: the release of substances from irradiated cells is much less.
