Self-medication.

Self-medication and drug interaction have been a problem in recent years. Pharmacists in ethical pharmacies and neighborhood establishments can best monitor these problems through use of patient profile records and consultations. The pharmacist should advise the public on over-the-counter (OTC) purchases. Auxiliary labels are recommended for use on containers to prevent drug interactions. Members of the black community have some specific problems with respect to self medications. These are addressed in this article. Self-medication, under supervision, is proper and can be controlled.

Antibiotic Self-Medication and Public Awareness During the 2023 Gaza War: A Cross-Sectional Investigation.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance is driven by inappropriate antibiotic use, particularly self-medication. The 2023 Gaza War disrupted healthcare services, increasing resistant infections and reliance on self-treatment practices. OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of antibiotic self-medication and assess public awareness during the 2023 Gaza War. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted between May and October 2025 among adults residing in the Gaza Strip during the 2023 Gaza War. A multistage non-probability recruitment strategy, organized across predefined governorate and residential-setting strata, was used to recruit 422 participants from primary healthcare centers, community pharmacies, and displacement shelters. The questionnaire demonstrated good internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.857). Ethical approval was obtained from the relevant institutional review board, and informed consent was secured from all participants. RESULTS: The overall KAP score was moderate (67.46%), with attitudes scoring highest (74.62%), followed by knowledge (66.23%) and practices (61.52%). Reported antibiotic self-medication increased from 60.4% before the war to 80.6% during the war (p < 0.001), with significant changes in reasons for self-medication and antibiotic procurement sources. The mean antimicrobial-resistance perception score was 82.19 ± 11.10%, and knowledge was strongly correlated with the total KAP score (r = 0.836, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Reported antibiotic self-medication was markedly higher during the 2023 Gaza War despite moderate public awareness, highlighting the urgent need for education, antibiotic stewardship, and improved healthcare accessibility.

[Self-medication in a urban population of Cuernavaca, Morelos].

This work contains the results of a study on the prevalence of family drug consumption. In our country, self medication should be considered a public health problem due to the population's lack of medical education. Nevertheless, this problem has not been properly studied. For this reason, we completed an exploratory study in an urban population of Cuernavaca, Morelos, México. Its purpose was to gather information about the situation of drug consumption and self medication. A survey was given to 373 domestic groups from the Carolina neighborhood in Cuernavaca. These groups were selected through systematic and probabilistic sampling. A total of 1,537 individuals of all ages were surveyed with an average of four participants per domestic group. Thirty one per cent of those surveyed had consumed drugs during the two weeks prior to the survey. Of these consumers, 53.3 per cent did it through self medication, and 64.9 per cent of them were females. If classified by age group, the highest consumer rate, 7.6 per cent, belonged to the users between 25 to 44 years. If the classification is done by sex and age, women between 25 to 44 years consumed more antibiotics and analgesics which were obtained over the counter. Among the surveyed population, the consumption of medicines was done primarily through self medication, mostly administered by women, and most frequently consumed by infants under one year of age. This phenomenon occurred regardless of the availability and accessibility of public and private health services. The data collected do make us identify women as a fundamental element in the consumption of drugs and self medication.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Comprehensive self-medication program for epileptic patients.

The establishment and operation of a comprehensive self-medication program for hospitalized epileptic patients are described. The patients in the program are required to meet established behavioral criteria during each of four stages of self-medication before progressing to the next stage. The patient has increasing responsibility in each successive phase of the program. The areas of patient involvement for the pharmacist are: (1) obtaining a medication history, (2) teaching patients about seizure medications, (3) conducting patient consultations during the self-medication program and (4) counseling the patient at discharge.

Adherence and accuracy. Self-medication during inpatient psychiatric treatment.

1. The goals of the Medication Education and Self-Administration Program were to develop a way to assess inpatient self-medication accuracy; create a comprehensive intervention that would address individual characteristics that may produce nonadherence; and evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention. 2. The majority of program participants demonstrated significant errors within days when given the opportunity to administer their own medications, suggesting that participants' in-hospital self-administration may be an accurate predictor of postdischarge performance. 3. Even in cases where training failed to influence self-administered performance, program participation provided valuable information that guided subsequent treatment decisions and programmatic refinements.

Drug abuse as self-medication for depression: an empirical study.

The authors empirically studied the self-medication hypothesis of drug abuse by examining drug effects and motivation for drug use in 494 hospitalized drug abusers. Most patients reported that they used drugs in response to depressive symptoms and experienced mood elevation, regardless of their drug of choice. Drug use to relieve depressive symptoms was far more likely in men if they had major depression, but was equally common in women with and without major depression. Information regarding a history of self-medication may thus be more helpful in diagnosing major depression in men than in women. Difficulties in diagnosing psychiatric disorders in substance abusers are discussed, as are the limitations of obtaining retrospective data on drug-using behavior. The implications of these limitations on the generalizability of the findings are reviewed.

Self-medication in a developing country.

An interracial study on self-medication, including over-the-counter medication, as assessed by medications kept in the home, was carried out among a group of White, Indian and Black patients of differing sociocultural backgrounds. Whites had the most medications in their homes followed by urban Blacks, Indians and rural Blacks. The White section of the population appears to be as 'drug-dependent' as their counterparts elsewhere; the chain of events leading to this situation appears to be: sophistication + drug availability + social pressures = drug-dependence.

Self-medicating practices for managing chronic pain after spinal cord injury.

Spinal cord injured (SCI) persons often experience chronic pain. Methods of dealing with pain that the SCI client found helpful in the past may not be beneficial after the injury. This article describes a study of self-medication for the purpose of pain relief. Over-the-counter, prescription, or illicit drugs or alcohol are among the agents employed in self-medication. The rehabilitation nurse has a role in helping the SCI person to identify appropriate methods of managing chronic pain throughout life.

Patients' expectations and intention to self-medicate.

I studied patients' expectations of receiving a prescription after a consultation with their general practitioner and their intention to buy a remedy from the chemist after leaving the surgery.Of a group of 368 patients, 56 per cent expected to receive a prescription and 24 per cent intended to self-medicate. A striking variation was found among patients attending each of the five doctors participating in the study. Patient expectation closely agreed with the prescribing rate per partner. No consistent relationship was found between a low prescribing rate and high self-medication rates. I suggest that by reducing prescribing and encouraging patients to be self-reliant in the management of minor ailments, it might be possible to reduce a general practitioner's workload and the amount of money spent on prescribing in general practice.

An unusual adverse reaction to self-medication with prednisone: an irrational crime during a fugue-state.

During five years of self-medication with Prednisone, a forty-one-year old asthmatic businessman experienced periods of euphoria, psychomotor hyperactivity, and poor judgement; a period of depression and anxiety during temporary steroid withdrawal; and finally, with resumption of Prednisone, episodes of grandiosity and bizarre fugue-like behavior, with adoption of a second identity and culminating in an irrational crime. Steroids were then withdrawn, and the patient resumed his premorbid personality, but had amnesia for much of his previous behavior. The literature on hysterical fugues and corticosteroid-induced mental disturbance is reviewed. The patient's reactions are analyzed in terms of his premorbid neurotic conflicts, the psychological stresses acting upon him, and the effects of Prednisone on his central nervous system.

Self-medication in a small community.

(1) Simultaneous recording of doctor/patient contacts and chemists' sales were made during a period of two weeks in a small self-contained community.(2) The conclusion of previous studies, using different methods, that non-prescribed medicines are taken twice as often as those prescribed by doctors, is confirmed.(3) The possibility that self-medication may conceal the onset of serious disease is discussed.

[Self-medication of 193 travelers in the tropics. Recommendations for clinical counseling of tropical travelers and organization of a tropical travel pharmacy].

Medical advice for the traveller is of increasing importance since in the past decade in industrialized countries there is a steady increase in numbers of travellers and distance travelled. Self medication was evaluated in 193 travellers to malaria-endemic areas. Diarrhoea, fever and headache were the most frequent symptoms. Antidiarrhoeal agents, analgetics/antipyretics, antibiotics and oral contraceptives were the drugs most often used by travellers. One case of mefloquine-resistant and chloroquine-sensitive Plasmodium falciparum malaria acquired in West Africa was reported, another patient took pyrimethamine/sulfadoxine because of suspected malarial fever. The main reasons for drug consumption in travellers to tropical and subtropical areas are functionally divided into 4 groups: vaccination and prophylaxis, medication during the outward and return journey, illness occurring during stay abroad and long-term medication. This classification should be considered when medical advice is given for travellers and is the basis for choosing the contents of a pocket dispensary for travellers.

Platelet dysfunction in migraine: effect of self-medication with aspirin.

Circulating microembolic index (CMI) was determined by drawing one blood sample into EDTA-formalin and the other into DTA alone in patients with migraine and compared with matched normal controls. Platelet aggregates, if any, are fixed in EDTA-formalin but disaggregated by EDTA. Ratios of these two counts approximate "unity" in normals and are proportionately less than unity, depending on the number of platelet aggregates. 26 untreated migraineurs and 19 migraineurs with history of self-medication with aspirin taken within 72 hours of the test, were studied in headache-free intervals. Results were compared with those from 20 healthy, age and sex matched volunteers, without migraine, who were medication-free for at least one week. Mean CMI in untreated migraineurs (0.77 +/- 0.03 SEM) was significantly lower than the mean in normal controls (0.94 +/- 0.02, p. less than 0.002). Migraineurs with self administration of aspirin had mean CMI of 0.88 +/- 0.02, differing significantly from untreated migraineurs (p less than 0.01) but not from normal controls (0.1 less than p less than 0.2). Results suggest excessive platelet aggregation in migraineurs which tends to be corrected by treatment with platelet inhibitors such as aspirin.
