Age-dependent decreases of sulfur and magnesium in human round ligaments of the uterus and relationships among elements.

To elucidate the compositional change of ligaments with aging, the authors investigated both age-related changes of elements and relationships among elements in the round ligaments of the uterus (round ligaments) by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry. The bilateral round ligaments were resected from 20 cadavers and also from the uteri removed surgically from 11 patients bearing uterine myoma or cancer. Thirty-one subjects ranged in age from 34 to 92 yr. It was found that both S and Mg decreased gradually in the round ligaments with aging, but Ca, P, Zn, Fe, and Al did not change significantly with aging. Regarding the relationships among elements, very significant direct correlations were found among the contents of Ca, P, S, and Mg in the round ligaments, whereas significant inverse correlations were found between the contents of Zn and elements, such as Ca, P, S, and Mg. It should be noted that there was an extremely significant direct correlation between Ca and P contents in the round ligaments.

[Laparoscopic correction of uterus retroflexion by sewing the round ligament of the uterus to the abdomen fascia in treatment and prophylaxis of pain syndromes].

The use of laparoscopy in diagnosis, investigation, and therapy is very important. The paper describes the laparoscopic technique of correction of a retroflexed uterus. This technique is based on sewing the round ligaments of the uterus to the abdomen fascia. Both simplicity and usefulness of the method are demonstrated.

Postpartum pain due to thrombosed varicose veins of the round ligament of the uterus.

Postpartum thrombosis of varicose veins of the round ligament may present in a clinical picture similar to an irreducible inguinal hernia. Two such unusual cases are reported. One patient underwent surgery while the other, with a presumptive diagnosis of the same condition, was observed, with no complications occurring in both patients. This condition has not to my knowledge been previously reported. The increased incidence of both varicose veins and thrombosis in the postpartum period should alert the physician to the diagnosis of such conditions.

[Leiomyoma of the round ligament of the uterus].

A 53-year-old patient was surgically treated for a tumour the size of a female fist, located on the left of the uterus and appeared to be either a uterine myoma or an ovarian tumour, and also for urine incontinence. Laparotomy revealed a solid tumour on the uterine round ligament, about 2 cm from the uterine horn, and histologically diagnosed as leiomyoma. In the differential diagnosis the authors refer to Kleinwachter's sign having been known for a long time.
