The reorganization of a monographic reference collection.

Reference monographs in the Health Sciences Library of the College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey were reorganized recently according to form, in order to enable both librarians and patrons to utilize these materials more efficiently. This reorganization reflects the unique characteristics of reference books as differentiated from the regular monographic collection, since reference materials are frequently consulted for quick "look-ups." A reference category scheme was developed and implemented, based on observations of and comparisons with reference collections of eight medical libraries in the New York metropolitan area. The reorganization enhances the retrievability of materials from this collection.

A new library for emergency medicine.

The publication of textbooks that are relevant to emergency medicine has increased rapidly during the past decade. This increase has created confusion in the selection of appropriate texts for both emergency medicine residency and hospital emergency department libraries. A critical review of 703 pre-selected texts was performed. From this review, a recommended list of 165 books for the resident library and 27 books for the emergency department library is suggested. The cost of these libraries is $6,433.05 and $1,230.05, respectively. The libraries are designed to assist emergency physicians and librarians in attaining maximum value in the expensive process of textbook selection.

Selected list of Books and Journals for the small medical library.

The relationship of the "Selected List" to collection development is explored in the introduction to this revised list of 559 books and 135 journals. The list is intended as a selection guide for the small or medium-sized library in a hospital or comparable medical facility or as a core collection for a consortium of small hospital libraries. Books and journals are categorized by subject; the book list is followed by an author/editor index and the subject list of journals by an alphabetical title listing. Items suggested for initial purchase by smaller libraries (155 books and 54 journals) are indicated by asterisks. To purchase the entire collection of books and to pay for annual subscriptions would require an expenditure of about $38,900. The cost of only the asterisked items totals approximately $13,200.

Items suggested for initial purchase by smaller libraries, 137 books and 54 journals, are indicated by asterisks. To purchase the entire collection of books and to pay for annual subscriptions to all the journals would require an expenditure of about $30,000. The cost of only the asterisked items, which are recommended for first purchase, totals approximately $8,900.

[French oncology: a spatiotemporal general view from a special observation point, the Year Books of Cancer].

The Year Book(s) of Cancer were analyzed to count selected French articles within the 1965-1982 period. A comparison between two periods: 1966-1976 and 1978-1982 shows an increase in French production from 2.3 per cent to 4.6 per cent. Strong sectors are breast, female genital tract, leukemia and lymphoma, radiotherapy, immunology and immunotherapy. This increase in number of selected papers is mostly due to articles published in biomedical French journals in which French language is prevalent. The place of provincial institutions changed from 1/4 in 1965-1976 to 1/2 in 1978-1982. With the same method of analysis, cancerology seems more developed in France than cardiology or endocrinology. This statistic suggests the necessary endeavours to further regularly improve the situation.
