The authors used an original device to examine the psychomotor function: rate of information processing, mean reaction time to light stimuli, number of errors in these events and changes of the functional state of the vegetative nervous system by fixation of electrical resistance of the skin before and after work. A study of 120 patients and 20 healthy subjects revealed a close relationship of psychomotor and vegetative functions, worsening of psychomotor reaction in hyperactivation of one of the links of the vegetative nervous system.

Tests that have rarely been used up to now in the psychomotor examination of psychiatric patients have been put together in accordance with our preliminary investigations to form a broader, standardized battery. With this new battery, which consists of the motorische Leistungsserie, a modified version of the Lincoln-Oseretzky motor development scale and the motor subtest of the Luria-Nebraska neuropsychological battery, a study has been carried out on 15 schizophrenics not actually treated with drugs, 15 endogenous and 15 non-endogenous depressed persons and 15 healthy controls. With the results of such a psychomotor "profile", measured over all items, psychotic patients can be clearly separated from the non-endogenous depressed patients and healthy controls. No significant differences have been found between non-endogenous depressed patients and healthy controls. These results are basically in agreement with many single findings in the literature. Results based on a broader battery for the investigation of psychomotor abilities in psychiatric patients could be of value in difficult differential-diagnostic problems and ought therefore to be studied further. In addition, the movement disturbances in psychotic patients, which have been measured by a broader standardized battery, could be the starting point in the development of specific psychomotor training programmes, which could improve the efficiency of conventional gymnastic and ergotherapeutic treatment methods. In this direction too, further studies would be useful and are indicated.

The authors studied the problem of parental attitudes assuming that in epilepsy, besides the coexistent CNS damage, the intensity and frequency of convulsive seizures, and the mode and duration of treatment which influence the functions of the child, the attitude of the parents is also very important. In the studied material of 272 cases (146 boys and 126 girls) treated in the psychiatric department and out-patient clinic in the Institute of Paediatrics, Medical Academy in Warsaw for at least 3 years three main patterns of parental attitude towards the epileptic child have been recognized: 1. overprotective attitude (58%). 2. inconsistent attitude (32%). 3. rejecting attitude (8%). Depending on these attitudes certain disturbances of psychomotor development manifested themselves or intensified, mainly in the form abnormal development of emotions and cognitive functions as well as social adaptation. In the conclusions the authors stress the widespread occurrence of incorrect parental attitudes and the necessity of psychotherapeutic influence on the parents.
The aim of this research was to investigate whether the development of object permanence is an available sign of the cognitive development in infants with psychomotor handicaps. Subjects consisted of 5 males, ranging in age from 12 to 33 months, with handicaps as a result of perinatal brain injury. Four were preterm infants. All of the children received psychomotor treatment. Their stage of object permanence was assessed using traditional (B-L) and non traditional test (U-H). (The children's performances on the U-H scales have an "Intrinsic validity"). Four children achieved the first stages of the development of object permanence. The acquisition of object permanence was delayed in comparison with the age-appropriated time, but it may be considered adequate in comparison with the "developmental age" (B-L). One children with severe mental and motor disorders solved no task, the findings suggest that the children with psychomotor handicaps may gain the concept of object permanence and that psychomotor treatment may assist them in the development of the concept. This performance is not age-dependent. So the acquisition of the concept of object permanence may be considered an accurate and sensitive tool for the follow-up of the sensorimotor development in the handicapped children.
